16U's win opener, 14U's fall in Nor'Easter Classic
The NorEaster 16Us opened the Seventh Annual NorEaster Classic with a win last night, edging the Middlesex, MA Rapid Fire 4-3 at Opechee Park. The 16Us broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the sixth by scoring two runs on two infield throwing errors.
Alyssa Crowell, who came in relief of Ali Dumais in the bottom of the sixth, ended a Rapid Fire Rally after they scored a run in a game shortened after six innings due to a time-limit.
The NorEasters loaded the bases in the sixth when catcher Jacqui Feehily reached on an infield error, shortstop Kara Irwin singled to left and third baseman Amanda Hackett walked. The Rapid Fire nearly ended the rally after forcing Feehily and Irwin out at home on infield ground outs.
But Mel Huntoon reached first on a throwing error that would score Hackett and right fielder Lacey Simoneau to take the two-run lead.
Down 1-0 in the third, the NorEasters scored two runs when Dumais singled to right, scoring second baseman Michele Baca from first after the right fielder misplayed the ball. Dumais ended up on third on the miscue. Crowell followed with a single to right scoring Dumais and putting the NorEasters up 2-1.
The Rapid Fire tied the game in the bottom of the third when first baseman Melissa Pessotti doubled catcher Erin Vienneau home from third.
Dumais scattered 8 hits allowing three runs, all earned in 5.1 innings work, walking 2 and striking out 4.
Crowell earned the save, pitching to four batters allowing one hit, walking one and fanning two.
14Us drop opener
Leading 3-0 going into the bottom of the fourth it, looked like the NorEaster 14Us were in control of their game against the Black Widows. Relief pitcher Emily Vallette changed all that when she stroked a grand slam that capped a five run rally in the sixth that handed the NorEasters a 7-4 loss, their fourth to the Black Widows this season.
The 14Us were hitting the ball in the early going when they scored two runs in the first. Chelsea Proulx singled up the middle and made it to third when Ashley Annis beat out a bunt. Lindsey Ficketts sacrifice bunt scored Proulx and moved Annis to third. Annis later scored on a slash basehit by Ashley Pevine.
The NorEasters made it 3-0 in the second when Stephanie Cross scored on an infield error after hitting a singled to left.
Proulx allowed 7 runs, all but one earned, on 6 hits, walking 2 and striking out 10. Ava Seidensticker went 2 for 4 in the game.
In other 16U action the Northeast Invasion defeated the NH Comets 1-0 at Memorial Field.
The softball tournament continues today with 48 games being at eight fields in Laconia, Gilford, and Belmont. Single-elimination play begins Sunday morning.
