New Jersey Senior Softball Association: My Site News: NJSSA MEETS TO PLAN 2008; SETS STATE TOURNAMENT DATES, LOCATIONS
Saturday, January 19NJSSA MEETS TO PLAN 2008; SETS STATE TOURNAMENT DATES, LOCATIONS
The New Jersey Senior Softball Association (NJSSA) board members and league presidents met at the Omega Diner in North Brunswick, on Saturday, January 19, to discuss plans for 2008. All counties aside from Union were represented along with a majority of the board.
NEWSLETTER: A printed newsletter is being prepared. Enough folks have requested a printed copy including a schedule for the summer and pertinent rules updates that it has been decided to mail it to all NJSSA members as it was in the past. Each league president has been asked to create a write-up about the league, its 2007 season and results, any pertinent news or stories to share with its league members, and a thank you and obituary section. Good jokes and pictures are always welcome! Please send any news or whatever to your league president for inclusion.
ASSOCIATION MAILING LIST: Bob Lorincz has volunteered to collect, collate and digitize the association mailing list – meaning the mailing list needs to be updated. Please forward a copy of your latest team roster to him, preferably by email: drboblorincz@hotmail.com.
NJSSA WEBSITE: The newsletter will not replace the website, www.njssa.us, which doubled the number of readers over 2006 year. Last year the website was visited 23,954 times compared to 12,672 in 2006. The website will continue to provide updated information on league contacts, directions to ballparks, association news, and any information (like schedules) submitted for it by the leagues. It will also contain a copy of the Association newsletter. Please send all info for the website to Phil Hewett, pwhewett@msn.com.
WEBSITE ADVERTISING: All leagues and teams have their own website as part of the NJSSA – it is free and provided as a part of the fees paid to the NJSSA. But it costs the NJSSA money. Any team, division, league or the whole association may have its choice of advertising on the website – for a small fee. The advertising rates will cover the cost for the website and help to defray other association costs. Team sponsors may be listed with an ad and or logo on the teams sites, the league can have advertisers on the league site, etc. If you have any questions, please call Phil Hewett, 732.925.7997.
TOURNAMENT DATES CHOSEN: 50+: Freehold; August 23, 24 – using the new and renovated fields. All divisions. 60+: Linden; Sep 6 & 7; all divisions 70+: Old Bridge; Wed, July 16, rain date July 23.
TOURNAMENT DETAILS: Several changes have been made to the tournament rules. 1. The rosters submitted NLT June 15 as your team rosters for the regular season will also be used as your state tournament roster. Teams MAY NOT add players from other teams. Please do not enter the tournament if, by the time you plan to enter, you do not have 9 players on your 50+ roster, or 10 on your 60/70+ roster. 2. If the catcher catches a foul tip at any height before it strikes the screen or ground the batter is out. 3. A batter will not be called out for sliding into home plate or first base but why would you? There is no situation justifying sliding into home, and it is faster to run through either base than it is to slide. Only if you KNOW you will be hit by a thrown ball might you slide going into first base.
LEAGUE INSURANCE: Each league has resolved insurance. Morris, Union and Monmouth will each fall under the same policy as last year; 84 teams paid about $2300 dollars/ $27/team for liability. Ocean, Somerset and Middlesex Counties will pay $30/team for liability AND secondary medical insurance through the new SSUSA offering (The S. Jersey Sr. Softball Assn is also starting to use SSUSA). Several counties have begun requiring secondary medical coverage, resulting in the switch to the dual coverage SSUSA offering.
NEXT MEETING: The NJSSA will meet again in about a month to resolve routine administrative details and assignments. The date will be determined and emailed to all participants.
