New Jersey Senior Softball Association: Links

National Senior Softball Association
This website is the main communication vehicle of the National Senior Softball Summit. It is supported by all nine national senior softball organizations: ASA, ISA, LVSSA, NSA, SSUSA, SPA, ISSA/ISF and the Huntsman Games.

The Summit, founded in 1999, is the annual gathering of the nine national associations that provide senior national tournaments and programs. The purpose of the Summit is to provide a forum for communication between these associations for the good of the sport.

In addition, Summit delegates hear recommendations and responds to the National Men¹s Advisory Board and the National Women¹s Advisory Council.

This website also provides:

» A list of National Tournament Dates for all member Summit organizations.
» A comparison of the major rules of Summit organizations.
» A list of recommendations from the National Advisory Boards
» A record of the Summit Minutes
» Links to all Summit organizations.
» A list of all Snowbird Players
» A list of teams winning first place in all National Association championships.

In addition, this website provides a list of National Team Ratings that have been determined by the National Senior Softball Summit Ratings Committee. Under the 2004 Summit Agreement, all Summit organizations have agreed to adopt the Ratings. Teams winning first place in all Summit organization final championships tournaments are raised up one skill level for the next year with no chance for appeal.

All of the New Jersey Slowpitch Softball sites registered using the eteamz format are listed; over 71 of them!

Softball Tournaments
One of the most complete listings of tournaments I have seen - but unfortunately, not complete. You should browse the other association sites to see if they do not list with Softballtournaments. The SSUSA doesn't, for example. Phil Hewett

United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA)
Similar to ASA, the USSSA has been in existence to promote slow-pitch softball since 1968 and boasts over 120,000 members nationally. As all the associations do, the USSSA hosts a number of tournaments around the country.

National Softball Association (NSA)
The National Softball Association is a full service organization that offers a division of play and a level of competition that YOUTH through SENIOR ADULTS can enjoy, including regional tournaments and more.

Independent Softball Association (ISA)
Softball for the 21st Century? ISA is the answer. While other major softball associations are experiencing declines in adult team registration, the ISA is experiencing phenomenal growth.

Why? Easy – the ISA from its owner W.E. Ruth of Kent, Washington, Executive Director Chet Tyl, and all state and area directors preach one doctrine “The Teams come first.”

The ISA listens to its participants and attempts to incorporate new and exciting concepts. Stealing in slow-pitch, the base-burglar, the pitcher’s box and realistic home-run controls are just a few of the innovations.

But, before we get to far ahead and tell where we are going, let’s tell you where we have been.

The ISA was found in 1984 in Shelbyville, Tennessee, by Larry Nash. It is one of the four major governing bodies of amateur softball in America, with ASA, NSA and USSSA. We organize, sanction and govern competitive participation in various formats and classifications through league and tournament play.

ISA’s popularity has grown steadily throughout its 20 year history, with current registrations in excess of 18,000 teams, 4,000 umpires and a network in excess of 350 directors.

ISA was the originator of the rule that permits stealing in slow-pitch, once the ball hits the ground or crosses home plate. This rule adds defense as an important factor and creates some balance to a predominately offensive game. Various homerun rules, including an inning ending out in men’s class “B” and below, governs competition levels and adds balance throughout the various classifications.

Our program incorporates participation in girls youth fast-pitch, Men’s Modified Fast-pitch and slow-pitch in all age groups and competition levels.

The ISA umpire program is second to none. Our stringent training and selection process adds up to a quality umpire on the field of play.

Insurance is no problem with the ISA. K & K Insurance Group, the largest underwriter of sports, leisure and entertainment insurance in the United States, provides our coverage with an insurance value that is second to none.

Our additional named field owner policy offers a full season of coverage and offers a $2,000,000 liability limit per occurrence. There is no aggregate policy limit. This is important because the policy will respond to any number of claims during a single year.

Individual team insurance providing valuable protection for players, managers, coaches, team sponsors and auxiliaries of the team is also available. Coverage is available with $50,000 accident insurance with a $289 deductible and $2,000,000 liability insurance.

As you can see w4e have covered all the bases. But, we are not finished yet, we’re just getting started.

Don’t miss the golden opportunity to join the most progressive association in softball. While others are content to rest on their laurels we readily admit our best days are still ahead.

Softball for the 21st Century? You bet. The United States, Canada and Mexico have already experienced ISA play and we are growing daily. You would be a welcome addition to our program and I am sure you will be glad you picked ISA.

Softball Players Association (SPA)
The Softball PLAYERS Association was founded in 1992, by Herb and Yvonne Oliver, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. It was established for the enjoyment of Senior Softball for all its Players around the country. One of the goals of S.P.A. is to protect the integrity of the game of softball. The "Doctrine of Fairness" helps S.P.A. classify teams fairly and provide a place where the teams can enjoy playing the game.

After retiring as Trade Relations Manager from a National company, Ridge Hooks purchased the S.P.A. in April, 2000. The National Headquarters was moved to Spring, Texas, a suburb of Houston.

With a 30-year History of involvement in softball as a player, umpire, and director, Hooks worked on a plan to enhance the game for the players.

1. To give teams more opportunities to play regionally, more qualifiers were added to the schedule.

2. A National Point System was established to help support teams who participated in S.P.A. by using points earned in qualifiers to seed them in the National tournament.

3. National tournament now features:
a) All Star Games, which were established to recognize players, chosen by their coaches, who have had an exceptional year.
b) Charity "skill" contests challenge participants while providing donations to Boys and Girls clubs in the host city.
c) S.P.A. also gives several college scholarships each year, using proceeds set aside from tournaments.
d) At the 2000 National Championship in Panama City Beach, FL., S.P.A. was the first senior organization to host, along with sponsor, Edgewater Beach Resort, a Ladies Appreciation Breakfast prior to the start of the tournament. This has become an annual event.

4. S.P.A. plays an integral part in the Senior Summit, which is attended by all nine organizations with a Senior Softball Program.

5. The S.P.A. was the founding organization of the National Senior Softball Hall of Fame, which is now recognized by all nine senior organizations who vote on the nominees.

6. S.P.A. has expanded its program to include a Women's Division in both qualifiers and National tournaments. The association also promotes a Masters Program for both men and women in the 35+, 40+, and 45+ divisions. This provides a "bridge" for players to transition into the senior program.

In 2000, S.P.A. crowned its first Women's Senior National Champions and Men's 45+ National Champions.

GeezerJock Magazine
Sports magazine for old guys.

Softball Magazine
Does not seem to be as serious and well thought out as Softball Today. Lots of ads and fluff articles, less real info and discussion.

Senior National Championship History (All Associations)
If you want to know who won what in which slowpitch division in what year, you might try starting at this website.

Softball Today Magazine
Good stories, excellent chat room, superior links page, and includes a section on bat reviews. Bat reviews left me cool; they highly rated bats I thought were duds and reviews were all good, no bad comments. Still, it lists bats you might want to test for yourself. The PST and Orange Crush were given high marks for distance, for example. I checked out the chat room and noticed a lot of bat reviews in it. The Freak consistantly was rated the best bat. The Anderson (I've used it with no success), the Crush and the PST were also mentioned frequently if you are looking for a different feel.
