GHFL Playoff Results

The Niagara Snappers took part in the GHFL tournament this past weekend going 3-0, with all 3 wins being 5 inning mercies, in round robin play before the rains came and put a halt to the action during the playoff round.

The Snappers opened with a 13-6 5 inning mercy victory over the RHCP in game #1.  Jamie Simpson picked up with win going all 5 innings striking out 10 along the way.  The offense was lead by Kevin Newhouse who went 2-3 with a homerun and 5 RBI's, Scott Young who went 3-4 with a home run and 4 RBI's and Mike Bateman who also hit a home run and chipped in with 3 RBI's.  Perry Bartley set the table for the offense by going 4-4.

Game #2 saw the Snappers taking on the entry from the MFL, the Central Fairbank Lumberjacks.  The Lumberjacks agreed to participate in the year end tournament to give the GHFL 12 teams and make the pairings even.  The Lumberjacks are a solid young team that is still improving and managed to make some noise throughout the tournament  Against the Snappers however, the Lumberjacks couldn't manage a hit as Niagara handed them a 7-0 5 inning mercy loss.  Byron Demoe threw all 5 hitless innings for Niagara, striking out 11 along the way and not walking a batter.  Todd Dawdy and Trevor Falk both went deep for the Snappers while Mike Bateman continued to swing a hot stick by knocking in 2 runs.

For the final round robin game, Niagara met the Mississauga Arrows.  Niagara again relied heavily on their offense and came away with a 9-2 5 inning mercy victory.  Scott Young got the nod on the mound and picked up the win. The offense was once again carried by Mike Bateman who hit a 3 run home run.  Perry Bartley contributed to the cause with a pair of hits.

With a 3-0 record, the Snappers were seeded #3 (due to runs against being the first tie breaker among unbeaten teams) and were matched up again with the Mississauga Arrows.  The game was tied 1-1 in the 3rd inning when the skies opened up and put a stop to the tournament. The Snappers will now take on the Arrows on Thursday September 11th at Lancaster Park with the winner advancing to the semi-finals which is still to be determined.  Check back for updates regularly.
