The Niagara Snappers and St. Thomas Centennials squared off at Ker Park in a double header to finish off the ISC Travel League regular season schedule. The Snappers and the Centennials split the 2 games to leave Niagara in 4th place in the league, and give the Centennials the #1 spot.
St. Thomas took game 1 by a score of 2-1. St. Thomas pitcher and Virgil resident Scott Wagar was tough on the mound, striking out 11 batters in 5 innings. Niagara Snappers hurler, Jason Paylove was no slouch either, giving up only 3 hits in the game and striking out 4 along the way. Snappers struck first with a solo shot from Scott Young in the bottom of the 2nd, his 14th of the season, but St. Thomas got 2 in the top of the 4th on a hard hit single by catcher Simon Rogers with 2 men on base to pull out the win.
Game #2 had centerfielder Scott Young getting a rare start for Niagara against New Zealander Tane Richardson for St. Thomas. You pitched an effective game, letting his defense do the work for him, giving up 3 runs in 4 innings of work. Not only did Young get it done on the mound, he also hit his 15th home run of the season in the bottom of the 5th inning and drove in 3 runs in total to give the Snappers a 5-3 win. Jarrod Burtt contributed with 2 hits and Kevin Newhouse went 1-2 with 1 RBI. Jason Paylove picked up the win in relief of Young. Mark Coleman and Chris Payne hit home runs for St. Thomas.
Next action will be on Saturday July 26th and Sunday July 27th at Lancaster Park for the ISC Travel League playoff tournament. The Snappers look like they will open the tournament at 12pm against St. Thomas with their second game slated for 2pm against Palermo, both games at this time will be played on Diamond #1. The tournament is broken up into 2 divisions with 3 teams in each division. Each team gets 2 round robin games, and then the tournament will shift into a single elimination playoff format with the winners of each division getting a bye through the first round of the playoffs.
