GHF Tournament Summary
The Niagara Snapper's quest for a 4th GHFL crown in 5 years came to a disappointing end on Sunday afternoon as the team lost 5-4 in the semi finals to the Waterdown Target. Niagara finished the weekend with a 5-1 record. The Snappers bats were hot all weekend long as out of the 6 games the team played, 3 of them were stopped after 5 innings due to the mercy rule. Niagara finishes the season with an overall record of 28-10-4. The Snappers would like to thank all the fans, friends, relatives and players for their continued support of fastball throughout the 2009 season. A big thank you to the sponsors for their generous support. We urge all fans, friends and family to continue to visit these sponsors as they are integral to the success of the Snappers.
Planning for 2010 is already in the works with the team deciding what direction it will take for the upcoming season. Please check back here for information as it becomes available.

Mike Bateman was named the 2009 GHFL MVP. Bateman batted an astonishing .500 for the season with 3 home runs and 19 RBI's in 18 games. He struck out only once is 46 at bats. This is the 2nd time Bateman has been named the league MVP and it comes on the heels of him being named 2008 GHFL Playoff Tournament MVP. Congratulations from the entire Snapper family.
The Niagara Snappers are 3-0 so far in the GHFL playoff tournament with 1 round robin game to complete tonight (Saturday) at 7pm against the Mississauga Arrows. Play will continue tomorrow with a single elimination playoff round. Recaps of all 3 games are below.

Snappers Split a Pair, Lose Rothwell for Season
The Niagara Snappers split a pair of GHFL games on Thursday night at Lancaster park, beating the Niagara Falls Dawgs 3-2 and then losing to Niagara Falls Lukes 5-2. The games left the Snapper’s record at 12-4-4 with 1 game left to play in the season.
Scott Young took to the mound to start game #1 and threw 4 innings to pick up the win and improve to 3-0 for the season. Jason Paylove pitched 3 scoreless innings to pick up his first save of the year. The Snappers were led at the plate by Young who had a triple, and Paylove who picked up an RBI. Glen Crocker went 1-3 with a double and Kres Andersen also knocked in a run for the Snappers.
The Snappers lost rookie catcher Ryan Rothwell for the rest of the season and possibly the 2010 season with a torn Achilles. Rothwell rounded 3rd base on his way home when his Achilles tore. This is another big blow to the Snappers who have already lost Trevor Falk for the rest of the season due to a knee injury. Both Rothwell and Falk are key contributors to the team and will be sorely missed on and off the field.
Game #2 saw Matt Lyon take to the hill to face the Niagara Falls Lukes. Lyon came out on the short end of the contest as the Snappers fell 5-2 to Lukes. Lyon allowed all 5 runs on 8 hits while striking out 8 in 6 innings of work. Jason Paylove pitched the final inning for the Snappers. Scott Young hit his 5th and 6th GHFL home runs to drive in both runs for the Snappers. Matt Bedrosian chipped in with a triple.
The final GHFL game of the season will take place on Wednesday September 2nd at 8:30 pm at Lancaster park. The Waterdown Razorbacks will provide the opposition to the Snappers.

Broken Arrow
The Niagara Snappers welcomed the Mississauga Arrows to Lancaster Park but were not very gracious hosts, sending the Arrows home with a 5-3 loss. The win improved Niagara’s record to 11-3-4 in the GHFL.
Matt Lyon started on the mound for the Snappers and improved his record to 6-1-2 for the season. Lyon allowed only 5 hits to go along with 5 strikeouts and 1 walk. The Arrows struck early in the first after Lyon struck out the first 2 batters of the game, Scott Christie of Mississauga punched a single through the right side and cleanup hitter Chris Barbeau took the first offering from Lyon and deposited it over the left field fence for an early 2-0 Mississauga advantage. The Snappers cut that lead in half in the bottom of the first with Perry Bartley scoring on a Mike Bateman double. The Arrows tacked another run on in the top of the 2nd and Niagara was down 2 runs at that point. Bottom of the 3rd saw Niagara explode for 3 runs on a Dan Bernard single scoring Lyon from 3rd and a Kevin Newhouse 2 run home run. Niagara added an insurance run in the bottom of the 5th inning as Bateman again cashed Bartley to make it 5-3. Bill Hillhouse took the loss for Mississauga allowing all 5 runs on 8 hits while striking out 10.
Next action for the Snappers is Thursday night at Lancaster as they play the Niagara Falls Dawgs at 7pm and the Niagara Falls Lukes at 9pm.

The Niagara Snappers took on the North York Knights on Wednesday night in Mississauga and came away with a 4-4 tie. The tie leaves the Snappers in 3rd place with a 10-3-4 record with only 4 games to play. Scott Young took to the mound for Niagara and kept the North York batters off balance most of the night, giving up all 4 runs (3 earned) on 5 hits while striking out 7. Peter Dobbin was the sparkplug of the Niagara offence, reaching base all 4 times and scoring 2 runs. Young chipped in at the dish as well, going 2-4 with an RBI. Glen Crocker went 1-2 with an RBI and Kevin Newhouse went 1-2 with 2 walks in the game.

In game #1 of the round robin portion, Niagara took on Udney in a tightly contested pitchers battle with the Snappers coming away with a 4-1 victory. Wayne Wells took to the mound for Niagara and was sensational, throwing 7 innings allowed only 2 hits and striking out 16. At the plate, leadoff hitter Peter Dobbin set the tone for his weekend with a 2-4 performance that included a 2 run home run in the 5th inning to extend Niagara’s lead to 3. Snappers Tie One On
The Niagara Snappers travelled to Niagara Falls to take on Lukes in GHFL action on Wednesday and came away with a 5-5, 8 inning tie. The Snappers were down 2-0 early but exploded for 5 runs in the top of the 5th inning thanks in large part to a 3 RBI single by Mike Bateman to go up 5-2. Lukes struck back in the bottom of the 6th inning working a pair of 2 out walks off Niagara starter Matt Lyon and then hitting back to back doubles to even the score at 5. The teams played the regulation 7 innings plus and extra inning with nothing decided. The tie leaves the Snappers record at 10-3-3, good enough for 3rd place in the 10 team league.
Matt Lyon threw the first 6 innings for Niagara allowing all 5 runs on 6 hits, striking out 3 and walking 5. Scott Young came in for the final 2 innings and did not allow a hit while striking out 1.

Snappers Storm Fury. Grind the Pepper
The Niagara Snappers increased their GHFL record to 10-3-2 with a pair of wins at Lancaster Park on Thursday night. In the opening game, the Snappers took on the always tough Niagara Falls Fury. Scott Young took the mound for Niagara and surrendered 2 runs in the first inning as the Fury wasted no time in getting their offense on track. The Snappers responded with 4 runs of their own in the bottom of the first as Mike Bateman drove in 2 and Young hit a 2 run home run to stake the Snappers to a 4-2 lead. Niagara would double that total for an 8-3 win. Bateman ended the game with 3 RBI’s, and Alex Szockyj chipped in with his first home run of the season, a pinch hit, 2 run shot in the bottom of the 6th inning. Young improved to 2-0 on the season, while Matt Lyon picked up his 2nd save of the season, throwing the final 2 innings and not allowing a run.
Lyon continued where he left off, blanking the RHCP in game #2 until the 6th inning, but still coming away with a 3-1 Niagara victory. The win for Lyon bumped his GHFL record to 5-1-1 for the 2009 season. The offense was supplied by 2 solo home runs. Kevin Newhouse and Dan Bernard each hit their 2nd home runs of the year, and Todd Dawdy picked up his first home run as the Snappers used the long ball to their advantage.
The Snappers will travel to Niagara Falls next Wednesday August 5th to take on Niagara Fall Lukes at 6:30pm at Ker Park. That game will be a tune up for the Niagara Falls Men’s Fastball Tournament which takes place from August 7-9 at Ker Park. Snappers vs Fury...nothing settled
The Niagara Snappers travelled down the QEW to Niagara Falls to take on the Niagara Falls Fury who currently sit in 1st place in the GHFL. The two previous times the teams met, the games were nail biters, with the teams tying 0-0 in the first game, and the Fury coming out on top with a 10-9 win in the 2nd game. Game #3 followed the same pattern as both teams scored early but then settled down into a rhythm that saw the game end in a 2-2 tie.
Jason Paylove took to the mound for the Snappers, and after getting into trouble in the bottom of the 2st inning, where the Fury scored their 2 runs, settled down for the rest of the game and went 5 innings total, striking out 7 along the way. Matt Lyon came in to pitch the last 3 innings of relief. For the Fury, Scott Wagar threw all 8 innings for the Fury, striking out 12 Niagara batters. Wagar gave up a solo homerun to Matt Lyon in the top of the 1st inning, Lyon's 3rd GHFL home run of the year, as well as a run in the 5th inning on a leadoff double to Kevin Newhouse who then scored on a single by Peter Dobbin.
The tie puts the Snappers record at 4-2-2 for the season, good enough for 4th in the 10th team league. Next action for Niagara is Monday June 29th when the team will again travel to Niagara Falls to take on Lukes at 6:30pm at Ker Park. Niagara then returns home that week for a double header on Thursday July 2nd at Lancaster Park. Games will be at 6:30 and 8:30.

Snappers Muzzle Dawgs, Fall To Fury Emergency
The Niagara Snappers came out even by splitting their doubleheader, winning game #1 with a score of 8-1, and then losing the nightcap in heartbreaking fashion 10-9. Niagara's GHFL record now sits at 4-2-1.
Game #1 saw the Snappers take on the Niagara Falls Dawgs. The Dawgs struck early against Snapper pitcher Matt Lyon, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a pair of hits. After that inning, Lyon settled down and didn't allow the Dawgs another hit for the rest of the game, finishing the game with 10 strike outs. Jason Paylove came in to record the final 3 outs in relief. At the plate, Lyon led the way going 2-3 with his first GHFL home run and driving in 3 runs. Mike Bateman continued to carry the hottest stick on the team going 2-3 as well and contributing 2 RBI's. Kres Andersen matched Bateman with a 2-3 game and 2 RBI's.
Game #2 pitted the Snappers against the Niagara Falls Fury. The game was full of offense, errors and drama as the Fury came out with a 10-9 win after a grand slam in the top of the 7th put them ahead by a run. Matt Lyon again took the mound for Niagara and pitched well despite some defensive miscues, allowing only 2 earned runs through 6 innings. The Snappers defense committed 3 errors leading to 4 unearned runs in the game. In the bottom of the 6th inning, with the game tied at 6-6, the Snappers struck for 3 runs off of home runs by Lyon and Bateman. Going into the top of the 7th and up by 3 runs, relief pitcher Jason Paylove gave up a leadoff double and a pair of walks to load the bases for Fury pitcher Tom Berube, who promptly deposited Paylove's pitch over the right-center fence for a grand slam and a 10-9 Fury lead. Berube then shut down the Snappers in the bottom of the 7th to preserve the win. Offensively, Niagara was led by Lyon, Bateman and Trevor Falk who all had 2 hits including home runs, Falk chipped in with 3 RBI's and Bateman had 2 RBI’s.
Next up for the Snappers is a rematch with the Fury on Monday June 22nd at 6:30pm at Ker Park.

2009 Snapper Shootout Results
June 5, 2009
Friday results from the 6th annual Snapper Shootout, which kicked off this evening with 16 teams competing for over $4000 in prize money with the winning team taking home $2500.
Anyone reading this that is within driving distance should come down for the day to enjoy some of the best fastball action that you will see outside of the ISC World Tournament and Tournament of Champions.
With the temperatures expected to be about 70-75 degrees all weekend, what better way to spend it then by finding a nice patch of grrass, a cold beer and a burger and watch some fastball. We have cold beer (and lots of it), great food at the concession stand, plenty of seating for the fans, and a live band in the beer tent on Saturday night.

A big thanks to all our volunteers that helped us out this weekend, if it weren’t for them, this tournament would not run so smoothly. So much work, time and planning goes into running a tournament and it really wouldn’t be possible without them. Also thanks to all our community sponsors and partners. With tough economic times hitting everyone, our sponsors have really stepped up to the plate to help the team out. Thanks to all the teams that made the Shootout another success. Every year we seem to get a strong field of teams that are world class both on and off the field and this year was no different.
