23U Mystics Win Invitational by the Bay in Bristol, RI

The 23U Mystics won the last tournament of the summer in Bristol, RI this weekend.  The team went 2-1 in pool play on Sunday, putting them in the second seed for elimination Sunday.

They started off the day with a 4-3 win in the first game over the Somerset Express.  Rachel Hedge pitched for the win and was backed up by outstanding efforts in the field by Molly Dussault, Ashley Adamson, and Ashley Impagliazzo who turned a key double play.

In the second game, pitcher Jess Underwood shut down the Thunder for a 3-2 win, allowing only 5 hits.   The Mystics broke out early, scoring 3 runs in the first inning.  Kayli Moniz started the inning off with a single and was brought in by Ashley Impagliazzo's screaming triple.  Impagliazzo scored on Andrea Crowley's key single and was ultimately brought in by a well-placed single by Lauren Rogers.

The championship game was a back-and-forth battle between the first-seeded Mass Inferno and the second-seeded NH Mystics.  The game was a battle of the Northeast-10, going nine innings with a majority of players on both teams having roots in the Northeast-10.  Jess Underwood hurled a gem with outstanding support from catcher Andrea Crowley, who caught the entire tournament.  The Mystics showed off their hitting power, espeically in the sixth inning when there was a three-hit streak started off with a single by Andrea Crowley, followed by a double from Ashley Adamson and a single from Lauren Rogers.  The Mystics took advantage of the international tie-breaker in the ninth inning when Heather Pelletier scored from third after being moved by a single from Sarah Kroener.  Both ladies scored on a blast from Kayli Moniz who had an open-field triple and went home on an error on the third basemen.  The Inferno scored their second-base runner in the bottom of the ninth, but it was not enough to match the three-run inning by the Mystics, who won the game 9-6.

It was an outstanding tournament for the Mystics.  Great job, ladies!  Congratulations!
