Defense sparks Cleveland's win

The Cleveland boys basketball team practices in-your-skin defense. The coaches say that allows the Eagles to win games on poor shooting nights and helps them force an average 32 turnovers.

That in-your-skin defense is exactly what led Cleveland to a 63-54 Metro League Sound Division victory over Nathan Hale last night.

The Eagles (8-3, 5-2 Sound), who forced 18 turnovers, took a 23-12 lead after one quarter.

"We started in our full-court zone pressure," Cleveland assistant coach Leonard Simpson said. "They handled it pretty well, but it allowed us to play a fast-paced game. Then we handled them with man-to-man pressure."

Hale (7-4, 4-3) never led, as the Eagles charged ahead early on three Rashard Mason buckets.

"The difference in this game was that we didn't come out ready to play," ninth-year Hale coach Ron Newton said. "We had too many turnovers and bad shots. We just didn't give ourselves a chance to win."

He said the game was lost Monday when his team made careless mistakes at practice.

"And it caught up with us tonight," Newton said.

An Alex Smith jumper pulled Hale within six in the last minute of the second quarter, but Cleveland nailed two quick buckets to end the quarter with a 33--25 advantage.

After four missed shots, Tyler Flora's layup cut the Eagles' lead to seven points. Cleveland answered with a Montez Morgan jumper and a fast break that gave the Eagles a 43-32 lead.

"Hard defense leads to tough offense," Morgan, a 6-foot-5 guard, said. "When knew we couldn't get frustrated and had to stay focused to play tough defense."

A putback by Michael Woolley, who had a game-high 19 points, put Hale within seven in the fourth, and with 1:51 remaining, they were only down five points.

But Hale's momentum was crushed when Mason drove the lane for two of his team-high 18 points. The sophomore scored seven points in the fourth.

"I just thought my team needed better rebounds and attacks to the basket, and that was my approach," said Mason, who also led Cleveland with 12 rebounds.

Kelso's Cort Carpenter scored a game-high 24 on 10-of-15 shooting from the floor, including 3 of 5 from three-point range. Casey Pursell added 11 points, four steals and four rebounds for Hale.

Exploiting its size advantage inside and its physical style, Inglemoor (6-0, 1-0 KingCo 4A Central Division) advanced to the championship matchup against Ingraham today at 8 p.m.

Jason Pratt led the Vikings with 17 points on 7 of 8 shooting. Steve Campbell added 14 points for Inglemoor, and Ike Nwaelele had 13.

Nathan Hale boys dominate Liberty in Bellevue tournament
Wednesday, December 29, 2004

SPECIAL TO THE POST-INTELLIGENCER

BELLEVUE -- The Nathan Hale Raiders came to the Bellevue Community College Holiday Tournament on a mission. In their first game against the Liberty Patriots they completed that mission with a 61-38 blowout victory.

The Patriots stayed close early and trailed only 23-18 at halftime. The second half was a different story. Nathan Hale dominated the third quarter with a 19-3 spurt that put the Raiders ahead for good.

Raiders senior guard Casey Pursell led all scorers with 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting while setting the pace of the game by pushing the ball up court, creating easy baskets for his teammates at the expense of the Patriots.

Throughout the game, Liberty could not amass any sort of run to get back into the flow. After the loss of senior forward Noah Bartholomew to an ankle sprain, the Patriots could not stop Nathan Hale, nor could they score inside around the basket in any capacity.

Late in the game Liberty was able to apply pressure on the Raiders but by that time the outcome was already decided. At one point in the third quarter, Nathan Hale led by as many as 28 points. The Raiders will play the Inglemoor Vikings at 5 p.m. today in the semifinals.
