Niagara Falls Red Raiders Basketball Association: History

  History

Niagara Falls minor basketball started in the 1940's with a city church league. The league operated for years producing many well known Canadian basketball players. The Niagara Falls Minor Basketball Association house league program is well supported to this day.

In 1995, Tom Grubb formed a Midget Girls travel team to provide quality players a club in Niagara Falls, rather than joining out of town teams. In 1996, this was expanded to Midget and Juvenile girls.

In late 1996, Bill Rootes contacted others to set up a comprehensive travel league for Niagara Falls named the "Red Raiders". Drawing from a house league base of over 500 players, 90 players were signed up in 1997 for the travel league.

Thanks to the support of many enthusiastic volunteers and parents, the Niagara Falls Red Raiders Travel Basketball Association formed an eight team league and hosted three very successful tournaments in its first year of operation.

Founding Executive members were: Bill Rootes, Bonnie Rootes, Ken Harris, Mike Waher, Judy Waher, Jerry Gibbs, Nancy MacDonald and Tom Grubb.
