NFOA Baseball and Softball Umpires page

The Baseball/Softball Coordinator is George Markey. George has been involved in officiating for over 40 years. The main season runs from May through August each year, on just about every day of the week. Training for "rookies" is held in March and April, usually at the Mang Community Center in Kenmore or at the Paddock Dome in Tonawanda.
Where are the assignments? Well, pretty much all over western New York, but about 2/3 is in the Town of Tonawanda.

MESSAGE FROM GEORGE:

The majority of our umpiring is girls' travel fast-pitch softball. We provide plate and base umpires for over 100 teams in the MGSL (Metro Girls) and the NFGSL (Niagara Frontier Girls) softball leagues. Also, we officiate tournaments almost every weekend starting Memorial Day weekend and continuing throughout the summer. Training for individuals interested in this type of softball begins each January. If you already have experience as a plate umpire, you may qualify to come to Veteran's meetings only. Contact me at the address below.

We also train umpires to officiate both baseball and softball behind the pitcher at the recreational level with the Town of Tonawanda games in June and July. This training begins in late March at the Paddock Golf Dome in Brighton Park.

NEWS FOR PRESENT UMPIRES

We are introducing a standard jacket that will be worn on those cooler days for baseball and softball. It will also serve basketball officials as a jacket that can be worn before and between games. It will also qualify as proper uniform for off-ice hockey officials. Since we wear gray slacks in baseball/softball, black pants in basketball and a red jacket in off ice hockey, the jacket will be red nylon with a cotton lining and have NFOA over the "heart". That will be the only lettering on the jacket. If we can get a decent initial order from baseball/softball in April, the cost will be only $20.00 plus tax for sizes up to XL to a high of $30.00 plus tax for 6XL. I will be contacting a few of you to put together a February order and a March order. If they are ordered individually, the cost will be about $6.00 more per jacket. Anyone interested in getting one or two early, e-mail or call me.

If you would like to contact George, you can e-mail him at... umpiregm@hotmail.com
