NFL Flag Football of Rockford

NFL Flag Football was created about 11 years ago by the National Football League.  The NFL Flag Football program exists nationwide in all 32 NFL markets and we will begin our fifth season in Rockford at Brown Park starting June 7, 2008.  NFL Flag Football provides the opportunity for children ages 5-14 and families to become involved in football through participation early in life.  It also helps develop the first phase of player and coach development by teaching football skills at an early age, while structuring the first level of a feeder system to our community tackle programs. All participants will receive a NFL jersey, a set of flags, an award, NFL certirificate, pre-season camp, league picnic, and all 9-11 & 12-14 year old teams are eligible to compete at the Regional Tournament.  NFL Flag Football of Rockford also includes:

  • Chalk Talk - NFL Flag will make sure that each participant knows the importance of a quality education.  We will try to have a 15-minute session called “Chalk Talk”.  During our Chalk Talk session, a special guest will speak on education and sports. We will have current and retired NFL players, local high school and college coaches, local leaders, and parents scheduled to appear.
  • Rockford Football Training Camp – Our fifth annual camp is design to help create a solid football foundation for our youths at an early age in life. The camp is open to all boys and girls ages 5 to 15 years old. There is a $40.00 participation fee that includes a t-shirt and instruction from a guest NFL player. This year's camp will  be held at Rockford College on May 17th. Our guest speaker will be 1985 Super Bowl Champion #55 Otis Wilson of the Chicago Bears and #59 Rod Wilson, current Chicago Bear Linebacker. We will also have coaches from NIU, Rockford College, Rock Valley College, Auburn and Boylan High Football staffs. Our past guest NFL players have included : Chris Harris, Chicago Bears, Mel Gray, St. Louis Cardinals, Emery Moorehead, Chicago Bears, Darrell Campbell Tampa Bay Bucs, and Staley Da Bear.
  • Football 101 - NFL Flag Football of Rockford will provide our Football 101 program to the Rockford Park District summer youth programs. Football 101 will consist of introduction to football, terminology, drills, offensive fundamentals, defensive fundamentals, flag football fundamentals, sportsmanship – “winning and losing”. NFL Cheer Program

NFL Cheer is comprised of girls ages 5-14 and will cheer for the NFL Flag Football of Rockford.  There are no tryouts, all cheerleaders cheer; therefore, squads may be of differing abilities.  All cheerleaders are coached by a volunteer and a high school cheerleader mentor.  The purpose of NFL Cheer is to develop, organize, and promote cheerleading activities for our youth participants.  NFL Cheer will also encourage good sportsmanship and fun for all our participants.

NFL FLAG FOOTBALL OF ROCKFORD SUPPORTS BOOMER ESIASON FOUNDATION

A portion of each NFL Flag Football of Rockford registration fee is donated to the Boomer Esiason Foundation fpr Cystic Fibrosis. Cystis fibrosis is a fatal genetic disorder that affects over 30,000 Americans. This disease is marked by chronic infections, clogged airways, and digestive and reproductive problems.

In cystic fibrosis patients, problems occur because the mucus in their lungs is very thick and sticky. Instead of serving as a lubricant, it clogs the respiratory system and allows bacteria to grow within it, impairing the body's natural defenses. The thick mucus also obstructs the pancreas, preventing enzymes from reaching the intestines to digest food.

The disease, which is not contagious, usually is diagnosed in early childhood. The most reliable diagnostic test is the "sweat test," aptly named because most cystic fibrosis patients have skin that is salty to the taste. Other common symptoms of CF include chronic cough and difficulty breathing, frequent sinus and respiratory infections, nasal polyps, excessive production of mucus, recurrent pneumonia, frequent foul smelling stools and diarrhea, enlarged fingertips, and sterility in males.

The daily rigors of living with cystic fibrosis is tough both on the children afflicted with the disease and on their families. Fortunately, a combination of therapy and pharmaceuticals can help keep the symptoms under control and enhance the child's quality of life. The long-term treatment process includes: enzymes that help in digestion; high doses of antibiotics during bacterial infections; daily therapy sessions that include special exercises to loosen and promote drainage of the mucus; other types of exercise to strengthen breathing and cardiovascular function; proper nutrition and vitamins; and several inhalation treatments each day to cut through the mucus.
