The youngest members of the Newton Wrestling Club traveled to Ottawa for the 6 and under age division State Championships on Sunday. Two of the four club members participating, Grant Treaster and Myriah Nicholson, placed in the top six in their respective weight classes. The tournament is a one day sprint where most brackets have in excess of 32 competitors with many athelets wrestling more than seven matches on the day.
First grader Grant Treaster finished third in the 52 pound division. Treaster wrestled seven matches on the day being upset in the semi-finals by a competitor from Parsons. Treaster finished the season with a nearly perfect 25-1 record in his age division. “Grant had a great season. He has shown as much improvement as any wrestler on our team. He has clearly established himself as one of the best in the state,” said his father and coach Matt Treaster. The smallest member of the team, Myriah Nicholson, competed in the 37 pound weight division and placed sixth. Myriah upset a top seeded competitor to make it to the semi-finals before she suffered her first loss on the day. “Myriah may be small, but pound for pound she is as tough as anyone,” said Treaster. “I am very proud of her accomplishment.” Nicholson is in kindergarten and will have another year in the six and under division next season.
Also competing at Ottawa were Boone Roberson and Kolby Clanton. Roberson was able to win three matches before being eliminated. “Boone and Kolby showed a lot of improvement on the year. It is a tough, long, hard season, and they did well,” said Treaster.
This concludes the season for the six and under division. They will begin again next November.
