The Newton Wrestling Club stormed through their district qualifier on Saturday, placing second in the team standings in the 37 team event. In the team standings only the much larger club of Salina outpaced the young railers. The railers qualified 20 wrestlers for the State Tournament with six champions. “This team has really developed over the last year. It is a credit to the high school and middle school programs as well as the kids club,” said Coach Matt Treaster. “This is a great group of kids who continue to just get better each week.”
The six champions for the club were Wyatt Hendrickson, Logan Treaster, Noah Ornelas, Ernest Kuhns, Ray Gallegos, and Miles Johns. Wyatt Hendrickson avenged a loss last week to win his bracket. “Wyatt is wrestling very well right now and has put himself into a great position to place in the State next weekend,” added Treaster. Logan Treaster, Noah Ornelas, Ray Gallegos, and Miles Johns all dominated their respective brackets winning each of their matches by fall or major decisions. “Each of these guys are wrestling at the top of their game right now,” said Treaster. Ernest Kuhns took his gold after taking the silver the week before. “Ernest is just learning the sport, but each week he gains. He is a tough kid,” Treaster commented.
Placing second for the club were Trevor Pryor, Seth Hill, Helam Hernandez, Joseph McConnell, Omar Ramos-Thaw, Quinton Harrison, Hugh McConnell, and Jacob Bartel. Placing third were Jared Langley, Brody Roberson, Keil Stauffer, Garrett McEachern, and Dillon Archer. Placing fourth was Garrett Lee. Placing sixth was Colby Beer, Brennan Wald, and Heydon Mock. Participating but not placing were Grant Treaster, Bryce Nicholson, Jayden Anderson, and Kade Remsberg.
The top four placers in each age and weight division at each of the four district tournaments around the state qualify for the Kansas Kids State Wrestling Championships in Topeka, March 28-29, at the Kansas Expo Center.
