New Haven Heat: Heat Highlights

Playing up in the 7th Grade division this weekend at the Mass Premier Tournament in Foxboro Mass, the New Haven Heat destroyed everyone. In fact, Sunday we played two 8th grade teams. In the 1st game, the Heat stomped Mass Premier 7th Graders 66-30.  It was the ultimate display of teamwork. In the second game, the Cobras were no match for the Heat, who were led by 15 points from Jack Steinman and the constant pressure defense of David Berritto, Jeff Stockmal and Kwane Taylor. Sunday we faced off against Rhode Island Breakers and dismantled them by 30.  In the championship game, we faced a much larger Pawtucket Hoops 8th Grade team. After jumping out to a 28 - 5 lead on them, the 8th Graders pulled within as close as 6 before our pressure team defense proved to much for them and we put them away 65-51. Jack Steinman continued his hot shooting, knocking down 3 threes and finishing with 17 points.

While this weekend's dominating performance in Mass was a total team effort, the hot shooting of Jack Steinman was evident the whole weekend. Jack was shooting the lights out and had two games where he finished with 13 and 17 points respectively.

After losing in the championship game last week to CBC in a hard fought and very close game, The Heat was looking for a little redemption. They found it in Mount Vernon, NY.  The weekend started with a Saturday Night smashing of the Hudson Valley Hawks and Long Island Lightning.  With a great display of teamwork, New Haven Heat put on a show for the Heat fans as well as everyone in attendance in Mount Vernon. Sunday was pretty much a clinic, both teams were unable to handle the size, strength and speed that these boys play with and the Heat won themselves their second tournament championship out of three. The highlight for me as coach had to be the way the boys played defense and passed the ball all weekend. Stay tuned to the site for more highlights but here is the top play of the weekend.

The New Haven Heat U12 National Team is looking good early in the season. The boys took out Philly Triple Threat, NJ Shoreshots and  South Jersey Jazz to capture the title at the Hoop Group Spring Showdown at Rebounds in Neptune NJ. After breezing through the CT Defenders and CT Rising Stars at the CBC Easter Challenge, the Heat drew CBC, one of the best teams in the northeast, in the title game.  We kept it close and had it as close as 9 with less than two minutes to go. The Heat boys played great defense throughout the game and hung with the bigger, stronger CBC team. While we were able to hold do-it-all CBC guard Jaycee "Mayweather" Martin to single digit scoring through the game, he buried two 3's down the stretch to put the game away and finished with 13 points..  CBC pulled away for a 47 - 33 win.  Off to NYC to make some noise and BRING DA HEAT!!!!!
