The Newfound Boys JV team earned their first victory of the season in defeating Frarmington Tuesday night, December 18th, 57-45.  The Bears picked up where they left off last season as they used solid play from their sophomores and steady supporting play from their Freshman to outlast the host Tigers.  Playing well for the Bears were Derek Mitchell, Chris Woolsey, Kris MacLean, and Kerry Mattson.  Their season record stands at 1-0 as they enter the game against Winnisquam on Thursday night, one of only two teams that beat them twice last season when they finished 14-4.

Tuesday, January 22
Winnisquam continues to frustrate JV Bears
In a tough back and forth game against rival Winnisquam, it was the visiting Bears that came out on top with some timely free throws at the end.  After beating Newfound 2 game slast year by a total of 3 points, Winnisquam pulled away on back to back 1 and 1 free throw opportunities to extand a three point lead into a 5 point victory at 42-37.  Playing well for Newfound were Chris Woolsey, Derek Mitchell and Kerry Mattson.  The BEars are off until they travel to Mascoma January 2.

Tuesday, January 22
Bears come out cold in new year, drop to 1-2
After a long Christmas break, the JV bears came out and looked as if they had forgotten how to playas they went down by a score of 56-30.  Mascoma jumped out early in this game thanks to weak transition defense and too many turnovers that allowed the host to build a 17 point lead by the half.  Playing well for Newfound were once again Chris Woolsey and Ryan Huntoon.  Newfound looks to break their 2 game loosing streak on Friday as it plays host to a Prospect Mountain team that defeated them twice last year by large margins.

Tuesday, January 22
Bears even record at 2-2 - win 54-39.
After dropping two in a row, Newfound played tough against a less talented Prospect team than what they had faced a year ago.  Newfound played all players in the first half and built a comfortable 20 point lead that they were able to maintain throughout the game in route to an easy 54-39 victory.  Playing well for the Bears were Kris MacLean, Derek Mitchell and Mike Pritchard.  Newfound gets another shot at Winnisquam on Tuesday night to try to beat the JV for the firat time in two seasons.

Tuesday, January 22
Defensive game goes to the Bears - Winnisquam 34-27
In a game that didn't see any points scored by either team unti 2 minutes to play in the first quarter and a half time score of 12-7, host Winnisquam once again continued to frustrate Newfound in winning it's 4th game in a row against the JV squad - all 4 game victories by a total of 15 points.  Newfound had it's chances late in the 4th to pull even, but a missed three and missed put back stopped any chance of a rally by the Bears with under 30 seconds to play.  With the loss, Newfound drops to 2-3 and will look to get even in the win column on Friday as they will travel to Franklin.

Tuesday, January 22

Monday, January 28
Bears JV improves to 6-3.
The Boys JV team once again were all business on the road.  Belmont came out spirited in the first and tried to prove that they were not the same team that lost by 50 in a game last year to Newfound.  The host Red Raiders held a 13-8 lead after one quarter and lead 21 - 16 with 2 minutes left in the second.  From there it was all Newfound.  Over the remainder of the quarter and into the third, the Bears outscored Belmont 21 - 3 to take a commanding 37 - 24 lead and played solid in the end.  Belmont got no closer than 7 points in the 4th as Newfound recieved strong efforts from Ethan Reynolds, Kyle Albert and Mike Pritchard.  The bears return home on Tuesday to play Littleton, a team that cancelled the last game due to weather.

Berlin cashes in on Bears' layoff.
After suffering through yet another week of snow, delays and cancelations, the Bears went to Berlin on a Thursday night and suffered one of its worst defeats of the season dropping a 45-27 contest to Berlin.  The long ride showed as Newfound was unable to get any kind of rythm going onoffense and allowed Berlin to out rebound and out muscle them in many areas of the game.

Tuesday, March 4
Newfound suffers second straight set back.
Another long trip up north resulted in another lack luster effort by the yourn Bears as their season record dropped to 7-5 with the 40-37 defeat at White Mountains.  The game was lopsided early as White Mtns jumped out to a 15 point lead during the second qurter, but witht he strong second half play of Ethan Reynolds, Kris MacLean and Kerry Mattson, the Bears tied the score in the 4th only to see the Spartans hit key free throws down the stretch to hold on.  Leading the Bears in scoring was Ethan reynolds with 11 points.

Tuesday, March 4
Bears get back to winning ways.
Facing a pesky Franklin team, the Bears fought off the visitors in the end to earn a 46-36 victory to improve to 8-5 on the year.  Newfound jumped out to an early 18 point lead, but with a big game the following day vs Mascoma, Newfound rested many of it's starters and allowed Franklin to gain confidence enough to pull within 6 points in the 4th.  free throws and timely defensive stops however allowed the Bears to pull away late.  Chris Woolsey lead the way on this night scoring a game high 11 points.

Tuesday, March 4
Bears come out strong, then bow out to Mascoma.
Facing their toughest oppoinenet of the season, the Bears jumped out to a 5 point half time lead, but thats where the momentum stopped.  Mascoma came out in the third to overtake the host within 2 minutes of the second half, then pulled away as the wear of three games in 5 days seemed to take its toll.  Kris MacLean lead the way with 13 points in the 53-39 defeat that dropped thier season record to 8-6.

For the first time in recent memory the JV boys basketball team beat Winnisquam in a boys JV basketball game.  The Bears traveled on a snowy December afternoon south to Tilton to take on Winnisquam to open the season.  Newfound lead throughout in what was a sloppy first game for both teams.  Newfound prevailed in the end 51 - 42 to start the season 1-0.

Monday, January 12
Bears get run over by Royals.
Two days after earning a tough win at Winnisquam, the Bears looked even more out of synch when they traveled to Mascoma to take on a quick Royals team.  Facing a JV team that played 6 swing players for Varsity, the Bears got down early and could not recover dropping a 65 - 45 decision.  The Bears are off for the Christmas break with a 1-1 record.

Monday, January 12
JV Bears earn first home victory.
Playing for the first time at home and in 2009, the JV boys team beat Gilford 52-42.  It what was amore lop sided game than the score indicated, the Bears missed many opportunities to put the visitors away and let them hang around until the end.  The Bears improved to 2-1 on the year.

Monday, January 12
Bears run past Franklin with big 4th quarter from the bench.
JV improved to 3-1 on the season with a convincing win over a big Franklin squad.  In what was a sloppy first quarter, the Bears were able to build a 10 point half time lead even though they failed to convert on many inside opportunities.  Both teams scored identical totals in the third and then the bench of Newfound took over.  Without the three swing players, Newfound was able to have their best offensive performance of the game outscoring the Tornadoes 19-9 in the final quarter.  With a final score of 55 - 35 the young Bears continue to improve as the season moves on preparing for the end of the season JV tournament at NRHS in March.

Sunday, January 18
Mattson carries JV Bears to win.
In what looked like an easy win after the first quarter up 19 - 8, the Bears fell asleep in the second quarter and tralled at halftime.  In the third quarter after starting out cold and trailing 24 - 21, Mattson took over.  The sophomore scored Newfound's next 18 points in the game and helped hold off a gritty Belmont team down the stretch.  The Bears would win the game 58 - 47 and improve to 4-1 on the season behind Mattsons 25 points.

Wednesday, January 28
JV Bears drop to 4-3 and #2 seed with loss to Spartans.

Facing a tough road test on Tuesday night at White Mtns, the Newfound Boys JV team played less than inspiring basketball in the 58-55 loss to the undefeated and now #1 seeded Spartans.   With 12 turnovers in the first half and 25% shooting, the Bears were fortunate to be tied going into halftime with WHite Mtns at 21 points each.  Offensive rebounding by the Spartans would prove to be the difference throughout the game as they continuously capitalized on second chance opportunities.  Matt Haskell hit a 12 foot jump shot with 19 seconds left to tie the game at 55.  White Mtns then hit 1 free throw and grabbed an offensive rebounda nd put it back for the 3 point advantage.  Newfound had two chance to tie on 3 point oppotunities but could not connect.

Playing well for the Bears were Kerry Mattson scoring 13 points and 6 rebounds, Shannon Tucker 6 points and 7 rebounds and playing his best game of the season was Ryan O'Connor who poured in 12 points.

After suffering 2 straight losses the JV boys basketball team came out against Prospect Mountain running on all cylinders.  The Bears hit open shots early and often on their way to a 10 point half time lead.  The hosts took control in the third quarter extending their lead to as many as 20 points by continuously attacking the rim and hitting open shots.  Prospect Mountain would attempt a comeback in the fourth but the Bears withstood and held on for the 67-55 victory.

Leading the Bears were Shannon Tucker and Kerry Mattson as each scored 17 points.  Ryan O'Connor added 10 points while Kyle Albert, Zach Seaverns and, Matt Blake also played well.

Wednesday, February 11
Bears overcome sloppy first half to improve to 7-3

Newfound fought off a tough Berlin squad and pulled away in the second half for a convincing 55-38 victory.  The Bears found themselves down after the first quarter and leading only by 4 at the half to a slower and smaller Berlin team.  Players turned up the intensity in the second half by applying tough defensive pressure that allowed the team to attack the rim and expand the lead to as many as 15 in the third quarter.

Leading Newfound were Kerry Mattson with 24 points and 4 steals, Kyle Albert with 7 points and 5 assists, and Steven Guyotte with 7 points.  Zach Seaverns grabbed 9 rebounds in the victory that moves the Bears to 7-3 on the season.

Wednesday, February 11
Last second shot lifts Bears to 49-47 victory.

Ryan O'Connor saved the best for last.  Ryan lit up the Raiders for 11 4th quarter points including 3 three pointers to cap a comeback by Newfound on the road.  Ryan finished the comeback by grabbing an uncontested offensive rebound, after a tough drive by Kyle Albert, and put back the 3 foot jump shot with less than 2 second remaining.  With no time outs left, Belmont barely had enough time to enter the ball and look at the other end of the court before the final horn sounded.

In what proved to be a struggle all night O'Connor finished with 4 three point shots and the final basket of the game for 14 points.  Kerry Mattson lead all scorers with 15 points, while Zach Seaverns scored 8 points all in the second half.  With the win Newfound now sits at 8-3 on the season and has solidified itself as the second seeded team in next month's JV tournament.  With two upcoming games against non-tournament teams, the Bears can set their sites on a clash with #1 seed White Mtns before finishing the season with 4 games against tournament teams.

Wednesday, March 4
Bears can't win second straight game at buzzer.

Playing short handed due to suspensions, illness and varsity call ups, the Newfound JV team gave a gutsy effort on the road dropping a 52-51 decision to Farmington.  Trailing for most of the game, Ryan O'Connor sank 2 key three pointers in the 4th quarter to pull the visitors into a tie at 51-51.  Farmington hit 1 of 2 free throws to go up by the final margin with 8 seconds remaining.  That set up two good looks by the Bears who could not find the bottom of the net unlike the previous game.

With the loss Newfound drops to 8-4 on the season.

Wednesday, March 4
Bears sleep walk through Prospect Mtn
The Newfound JV team looked confused and emotionless as they dropped their second straight game.  Newfound trailed through out as they could not break the press or the defense of the host Timberwolves.  Newfound now stands at 8-5 on the year with a big home test on Thursday against tournament #1 seed White Mountain.

Wednesday, March 4
Bears get big win vs White Mtns at home - improve to 9-5

Facing the tournaments #1 seed and a team that had beaten them by 3 earlier in the month, Newfound found a way to get the job done.  Up by only 2 points at half, Newfound used a strong second half charge in beating the Spartans and serving notice that the upcoming JV tournament should be very entertaining.  Newfound was lead by Kyle Albert with 15 points, Kerry Mattson wth 14 and Ryan O'Connor with 13.  Shannon Tucker also added 8 points and 6 rebounds.

The win keeps Newfound at the #2 seeding by virtue of the overall records of the two teams, but gives the tournament hosts confidence that they can beat any team in the tournament, something they lacked last season in loosing 3 times to Winnisquam.

Wednesday, March 4
Newfound 53 - Inter-Lakes 41
In a game that really wasn't as close as the final score, Newfound rode the scoring of Kerry Mattson (13), Shannon Tucker (12) and Ryan O'Connor (10) in defeating the Lakers over school vacation.  8 different players scored as the Bears used a balanced attack in defeating the visitors.  The Bears improve to 10 - 5 on the season - their 3rd straight year with double digit wins, and will look to continue their success on Friday when they host Franklin in the season's final regular season game.

Wednesday, March 4
Bears hold off challenge of Franklin

After beating the Tornadoes at Franklin in the beginning of January by double digits, the Bears may have been looking past their opponent on this night a little too much.  Trailing for much of the game, Newfound put together a strong 4th quarter effort that allowed them to take the lead in the final minute and hang on for the victory.  Zach Seaverns grabbed a key rebound late in the 4th and Newfound was able to hit 1 of 2 free throws to seal the victory; 43 - 41.

Kerry Mattson lead Newfound with 13 points and Shannon Tucker added 8.  Three other players, Ryan O'Connor, Kyle Albert and Shawn Downes-Rule also added 6 points each.
