The New Fairfield Wrestling Club is an all-volunteer “booster club” for amateur wrestling in New Fairfield. We are a not-for-profit, incorporated legal entity in the state of Connecticut. The club currently provides support to wrestlers ranging in age from 4 to 18 and their families in the communities of New Fairfield and Sherman. On Sunday March 7, 2010 the New Fairfield Wrestling Club sent 11 dedicated wrestlers to Hill House High in New Haven for the 2010 CT State Championships. These 11 wrestlers qualified to compete for the title- best in CT by placing in the top four in their weight classes in the Qualifiers 2 weeks ago. All the NF wrestlers have been training dilligently all year with the ultimate goal being to win the CT State Championship. The 11 NF wrestlers, varying in age, weight and experience stepped on the mats Sunday with the championship in mind.
Liam Ford
After finishing 3rd in the qualifier 3rd grader Liam Ford made his first appearance at youth States in the intermediate division. In his first match, Liam majored Trever Boutot of Coventery 15-6. In the quarter-finals, Liam shocked everyone beating the 4th seed of Cheshire by pin. In the semi-finals, Liam lost a tough match to an opponent he has wrestled multiple times this season by a score of 4-2. In his first wrestle back match, Liam lost another nail bitter to Alex Hernandez of Plainville 8-4. Liam Made an impressive first apprearance as a 3rd grader wrestling in the 3rd/4th grade division. He impressed many with his strength and determination and is sure to have great success in future State Tournaments.
Jason Vitrit
This was 4th grader, Jason Vitrit's second trip to the CT State Tournament. He qualified by finishing 3rd in the Bristol state Qualifiers. In the first round Jason tech falled Ezar Spreng of Montville to advance to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals Jason was pinned by the wrestler who later won the Championship-Isac Meyers from KT Kids. Jason went on to wrestle tough in the wrestle backs with a pin of Brandon Rivera. He then wrestled to a 2-1 victory over Andrew Douccette of Fish-Eye in the consi-finals to secure the 3rd place trophy. Jason's talent, love of wrestling and perpetual smile point to a future of great possibilities in the sport of wrestling.
George Quartaro
In his second trip to Ct State Champpionships, 4th grader, George Quartaro showed that he belonged, winning the first state championship of the day for the Rebels. Wrestling tough all year, George came into this tournament with a lot of confidence and determination and he really showed it on the mat. Winning in dynamic fashion Tech Falling and pinning his opponent , he is the 96 lb Intermediate 2010 CT State Champ. George has shown great improvement as a wrestler this year and he’s only going to get better.
Avery Shay
Coming in as a 3 seed and trying to defend his State title from a year ago, 5th grader Avery Shay showed Connecticut wrestling how good he can really be. Pinning his first two opponents with ease, Avery made the semi-finals in a much anticipated match up with Wesley Bookland of KT Kidz. Avery did come out of top in an exciting 6-4 victory scoring 2 near fall points as time ran out to break the tie and give him a shot to repeat as state champ. In the Finals Avery tech falled Tim Kane of Rough Riders wrestling 14-0 to repeat as a State Champ. Avery Shay is a determined wrestler who is sure to see huge success in his wrestling future.
Alec Opsal
Wrestling in one of the tougher brackets in the tournament, 6th grader Alec Opsal came in on fire, wrestling extremely well. Pinning his opponents in his first two matches, Alec reached the semi-finals with a rematch with Alex Starr of Colchester. In a close match, Alec fell to Starr 4-2. With a rematch from the qualifiers, Alec wrestled Joey Hulse of Danbury , again losing a tough fought match 5-3 in overtime. Alec wrestled well today in an extremely tough bracket. Alec's skill, determination and dedication is sure to lead to mean great things for his future.
Andrew Vitrit
Surprising a lot of people last week at the qualifier with a 2nd place finish, 6th grader Andrew Vitrit entered the state tournament ready to go. In his first match, Andrew fell to Jacob Berry in overtime. Wrestling back he than handled Jared Zima of Berlin pinning him in the 3rd period. Andrew then lost 7-4 to Andrew Marquis of Danbury in a hard fought match, ending his day. Andrew has grown as a wrestler this year and has a bright future in wrestling.
Andrew D’amico
6th grader Andrew D'Amico entered this years championships with only 2 losses during the season. Andrew showed how impressive and skilled he can an be. In a rematch of the League Semi Finals match, Andrew pinned Trumbulls Richard Pogacsas in the second period. Reaching the semis, Andrew again came out aggressive and pinned Jackson Rheault of Somers in the third. Reaching his first state championship finals, Andrew faced an opponent that he had lost to at last year's State championships. This year it was a different story, coming out strong, Andrew took a demanding 7-0 lead before pinning Emmett LiCastri of Easton, to become the 100 lbs novice CT State Champ. Andrew has made great strides this year and is a wrestler that many coaches dream of, he has potential to be an outstanding wrestling now and for many years to come.
Tyler Cerlich
6th grader and first year wrestler Tyler Cerlich came into the tournament under the weather after battling illness all week.Tyler did not let his illness stop him from making it to the State Finals. In his first two matches Tyler pinned his opponents in demanding fashion. In the finals wrestling a common foe, Rocco Swenson, Tyler fell 2-1 finishing as state runner up. Tyler's health clearly had an impact on his performance in the finals. Tyler has had an extraordinary first year of wrestling with only a few losses. His detemination, skill and strength will pave the way to more wins in the future.
Taylor Shay
Defending State Champion, 6th grader Taylor Shay came into the tournament with his eyes on the prize, ready to bring home gold once again. In his first match, Taylor handled Russell of Derby with a first period pin. Getting to the Semi’s, Taylor defeated Brian Roscover of MarcAurele earning himself a spot in the finals against Northeast Elites Will Verallis. In this highly anticipated match, both wrestlers came to wrestle. Wrestling a scoreless first 3 periods we had our first overtime match of the finals. With no one scoring in the first two overtime periods the match still 0-0 went to a final ride out period.Taylor choosing top has to hold his opponent down for 30 sec. to win if his opponent escapes than the oppoenent wins. With seconds remaining, Verallis was able to clear his hip and escape, ending this great match with Taylor on the losing end. Possibly the best match of the finals Taylor showed everyone in the gym that he is in the top tier of wrestlers in the state of CT. Finishing as State Runner up, Taylor is set on working hard and accomplishing great things in the sport of wrestling.
Billy Gantert
First year wrestler, 8th grader Billy Gantert has gotten better and better every match and practice this season. His hard work earned him a trip to the State Tournament this year. Facing top seed Will Chowanec of NE Elite in his first match, Billy opened peoples eyes, only falling 6-1 to this tough wrestler who went on to pin his way though the tournament. Billy, in the first wrestle back, fell behind 5-0 to Stamfords Jarombek but turned everything around taking down and pinning Jarombek . Billy fell 7-3 in his last match, wrestling a tough Ridgefield wrestler, a rematch from the League Finals . Billy is a great kid that is determined and not afraid to work hard. He does anything that is asked of him and he has a bright future in high school wrestling.
Matt Mckenzie
8th grader, Matt McKenzie, a long time NF wrestler, qualified for this years State Championships in Bristol. In his first match at the CT State Championships, Matt was pinned by Calvin William of Hartford . Wrestling in his second match, Matt fell to Crowle of Milford. With hard work and determination Matt can use his knowledge of wrestling to have great success with the HS wrestling team.
The Youth NF Rebels wrestling team finished the day and their regular season with 4 finalists, 3 champs, 2 runners up and a 3rd place winner. The team is sure to have more success in the future. Many wrestlers will continue to wrestle into the spring and summer months and everyone is looking forward to an even more successful year next winter.
The NFWC is sponsoring a Spring wrestling program for all kids 8-18 interested in getting on the mats this spring. Practices will be held Mon, Tues and Thurs from 6-8 at the NFMS Cafe beginning Thursday 3/11 through June 15th. The focus will be technique and maintaining skills through instruction, drilling and games. Participants will be encouraged to move at their own pace and there is no attendance requirement. New wrestlers and out of town residents are welcome. USAW card is required for all participants which can be purchased at initial practice for $36. Resident program fee is $50 per wrestler, Out of Town Resident Program fee is $75. Registration forms and fees will be collected at initial practice. The NF Little Rebels wrestled well and had a great time at their first meet of the 2009 season against Bethel on Thursday 12/3.

The NF Little Rebels had another great performance at their meet against Pomperuag this past Thursday. Pomperaug was a tough opponent but the Little Rebels wrestled hard and won 14 out of the 23 matches. Great Job Boys.

The NF Little Rebels took on the Ridgefield wrestling team this past Thursday. The Rebels put their skills into action and won some hard fought battles. The Little Rebels are away at Danbury Stadley Rough this Tuesday 1/12.

THe NFMS Wrestling team travelled to New Milford on Friday for their first match of the season. All the practice over the past several weeks paid off with a win against a strong New Milford team. With 1 day to rest, the team then travelled to Bristol, Connecticut on Sunday for a Quad where the NF wrestlers endurance and skill was tested wrestling many matches against some of the strongest wrestlers in the state from Ridgefield, Bristol and Colchester. It was a great opening weekend for our Middle School Team!
