DATE:  Thursday, June 26, 2008 GAME:  NCLL Minor Mets (17) – NNLL (5)

REPORTER:   Darren Courter

The Minor A White Sox from Niles-Centerville Little League took their 17-3 regular season record into the CA District 14 2008 Minor TOC tournament and continued their role by defeating the Giants from Newark National 17-5 in the championship game on June 26.  During the regular season, the White Sox outscored their opponents an average of 13-6.  During post season play, they extended their dominance by averaging  a winning margin of 15-6.

For the White Sox, the TOC games brought more of the same...solid pitching, good defense and timely hitting.  Pitching leaders included Chris Llanos, Adam Courter, Dom Amaral, Jake Gordon, and Nick Coumou.  Defensive leaders included Alejandro Lemus at 2nd base and Johnny DenBleyker behind the plate.  Several players significantly picked-up their hitting in the TOC.  Those players included Tyler Gray, Alexyz Lemus, Dylan Pegueros and Jordon Dixon.  It was, as always, an all-around team effort!

TOC Junior Championship - NCLL Giants Win 10-0

DATE:  Wednesday, June 25, 2008

GAME:  NCLL Junior Giants (10) – NNLL Giants (0)

REPORTER:      Jill Erickson

The Junior Giants from Niles-Centerville Little League took their 18-4 season record into the 2008 TOC tournament and claimed the CA District 14 Junior TOC Championship by blanking the Newark National Little League Giants 10-0 on June 25.  During their 22 regular season games, NCLL outscored their opponents an average of 10-5.  They raised the bar to 11-3 during their 3 postseason games.

The Championship game between NCLL and NNLL guaranteed a win for the Giants… just not which league.

NNLL tried to get something going in the 2nd, but NCLL pitcher Brandon Ridge got out of the inning leaving bases loaded.  NCLL responded with 5 runs in the bottom of the 2nd. Sparked by Gabe Cretella's ground rule double, and followed by Tyler Brown’s 2 RBI double, the Giants took the lead for the rest of the game.

Pitcher Ridge picked a runner off 1st in the 3rd inning, followed by a quick 7-6-2 (Brown-Ferber-Cretella) relay to catch an additional out at the plate to end the inning. In the 4th, catcher Cretella picked off the lead runner stealing 2nd. The Giants added 4 more runs in the 3rd, including Ferber's 2 RBI double, and then won 10-0 in 5 innings. Ridge pitched a complete game shut-out for the Giants to take home the Championship banner.

NCLL Senior Mets Beat WSLL 10-3 for Senior District 14 TOC Title
Sr Mets TOC champs
The Senior Mets from Niles-Centerville Little League took home the Senior TOC Championship with a 10-3 victory over the Seniors from Warm Springs Little League.

Niles drew a bye in the first round of the tournament then beat Mission San Jose's Seniors 12-7 to enter the final round.  Starting pitcher Athen Sinodinos had a great game striking out 10 batters and hitting 3-5.  Sean O’Hare hit a two run homerun, his first of the season, with a shot over the left field fence.  O’Hare also closed the game, pitching the last two innings, allowing no runs and striking out four.  Alex Celeya went 3 for 4 and Roger Branco helped Niles out with a bases loaded single in the 6th that scored the final two runs of the game.     Warm Springs played Centerville American in the opening round and won 8-6, then squeezed by Fremont American 7-6 in the second round before running into NCLL in the Championship Game.  The Championship game seemed to start slow.  Warm Springs scored a run in the first inning then Niles came back in the second with a run.  By the 3rd inning with two outs and two Niles runners on, starting pitcher Robert Higares hit a 3 run homerun over the fence in right-center.  Higares would later get a double for his second hit of the game.  Warm Springs couldn’t catch up from there.  Athen Sinodinos went 3 for 3 and Roger Branco would add 3 more RBI’s to his credit for the tournament.  Defensively, center fielder Cody Lebon made an outstanding catch in the 5th for the third out to hold the threat of Warm Springs scoring again. Pitching, Higares had 9 strike outs and walked only one batter. In the 7th inning with two outs, Higares was pulled because he had reached his pitch count limit leaving him to fall one out short of a complete game.  Alex Celeya came in to close the game.  Only facing 3 batters, Celeya ended it with a strike out

Giants Win Rematch over MSJLL A's 6-3
DATE:  Monday, June 23, 2008
GAME:  NCLL Junior Giants (6) - MSJLL Junior A's (3)
REPORTER:      Jill Erickson

Three weeks ago today, the MSJLL A's beat our Giants in 8 innings to finish the regular season.  New game; new tournament.  Gabe Cretella took control of the mound for 5 innings to put this rematch out of reach, including 6 consecutive strike outs in the first 3 innings.

Cretella and Chris Erickson opened the top of the 2nd with back to back doubles, followed by Marshall Duffy's RBI single. Alec Ferber started the 3rd inning on base by an error, then stole his way around and forced another error to score. Brandon Ridge was hit by an inside pitch, and scored on Zuri Chu-Hall's towering triple to left center that one-hopped to the 365' fence.

By the time the A's finally put together back-to-back hits by Chris Gaines and Sam Sanchez in the bottom of the 4th, and Gaines scored the A's lone run off Cretella, the Giants had compiled a 4-1 lead.  In the top of the 5th our Giants greeted a new A's pitcher with 5 hits from the first 6 batters, adding another 2 runs to their tally.  That was more than enough to secure their win.

Gaines tried to get the A's started against reliever Duffy in the 6th with a lead-off hit, then scored on Cole Lewis' single. Ridge struck out 2 of the 4 batters he faced in the bottom of the 7th, allowing our Giants to advance to the Championship game against the Newark National LL Giants.

GAME:  NCLL Junior Giants (16) - NALL Junior Orioles (5)
REPORTER:      Jill Erickson

HOT, HOT, HOT..... luckily our 10am game wouldn't quite get to 100 degrees, through the Giants batting would get close.  Newark American pitcher Ruppert had the Giants batters guessing through their lineup the first time, but then allowed 4 runs in the top of the 2nd on back to back doubles by Alec Ferber and Brandon Ridge.

Starting pitcher Zuri Chu-Hall overpowered the Orioles batters for 5 innings, only allowing 4 hits.  The Giants defense neutralized Orioles walks in 3 different innings. Starting catcher Ridge threw out a runner stealing 2nd in the 1st inning, and relief catcher Gabe Cretella caught a thief in the 5th.  After a lead-off walk in the bottom of the 2nd, the Giants infielders turned a double play to stop a potential Orioles rally.

Cretella had a 2 RBI double in the 4th as the Giants added 3 runs, then hit one that sailed the left field fence for a 2 run homer in the 5th giving the Giants a 10-2 lead. The Orioles' "double trouble" continued as Luis Rodriguez led off the 6th with a 2-bagger. A few batters later, Chris Erickson added another for the 5th Giants double of the game, and a total of 6 Giants runs in the 6th.

The Orioles tried to mount a 3-run rally against reliever Marshall Duffy in the bottom of the 6th, but fell short.

Our NCLL Giants continue their TOC quest against the MSJLL A's on Monday, June 23 at 5:30pm at Newark HS.

Giants Clinch NCLL Junior Title
DATE:  Tuesday, May 27, 2008 GAME:  NCLL Junior Giants (14) – NCLL Junior Pirates (3)REPORTER:      Jill Erickson Coming off a 3-day holiday weekend didn't slow the Giants down. Scoring 14 runs on 14 hits allowed the Giants a 14-3 win, preventing the Pirates from stealing the NCLL Junior title. Zuri Chu-Hall had another strong start on the mound, allowing 1 run on 4 hits in 3 innings.  Marshall Duffy returned to the rotation with 2 good innings in relief.  Beau Lawrence took the brunt of the Giants offensive barrage, while Trent Jackson provided relief for the Pirates. The bottom half of the Giants order provided the ignition in both the 2nd and 4th inning scoring sprees, just as they did throughout the season.  Marquis Cogshell provided 2 hits and 3 RBIs from the 9th position. Josh Rozul, Chris Erickson, Chu-Hall and Duffy also had 2 hits each.  Alec Ferber and Sam Banducci were among the Giants crossing the plate multiple times. For the Pirates, Lawrence went 3-3 but was stranded every time. Jorge Garcia led off the 3rd and proceeded to score. In the 4th and 5th, lead-off batters Marcus Garza and Parker Knight also each got on base and scored, but the Giants defense tightened up to hold the Pirates to 3 runs for the game.

Congratulations to the Giants for their 2008 Junior Championship.

GAME: Minor B Cardinals vs Royals
REPORTER: Dana Casey
In the middle of an extremely hot afternoon, the Minor B Cardinals played against the Royals.
In the top of the  first inning the Cardinals were able to get three players on base.  However with an outstanding play by  Tanner Granzella, short stop for the Royals, and Matthew McKinney, on first base, along with an unassisted out by third baseman, Joey Jorgens, the Royals prevented runs.  Bottom of the 1st inning, the Cardinals kept the Royals from scoring more than 2 runs.  A hard hit was stopped by Cardinals pitcher, Carson Schreiber, who threw to catcher Allan Edwards for the 1st out. The last out of the inning was because of great effort on Damian Ulloa at 1st base.  The bottom of the 2nd inning ended because of the 5 run rule for the Royals.  During the 3rd inning, Thomas Poniatowski brought in the only run. Felipe Marasigan, the short stop for the Cardinals, caught a line drive for the 1st out and then Damian in center field threw to Mike McClusky at second base for another out. The 4th and last inning of the game, Charlie Heimsoth (Cardinals) was the only player to make it to the base.  The Royals Pitcher and 1st baseman, Daniel Santos and Bradley Slater, were too good of a match, to let anyone else get to the base.
With the score at 8-0, the Royals only needed 2 runs to end the game with the ten run rule.  The Royals began the 4th inning at the top of the line up.  Right away, Matthew McKinney, Daniel, and Sam Braun had awesome hits that allowed the bases to be loaded.  Next up was Alex Rodriquez.  He crushed the ball over the centerfield fence making a dent in the shed.  As every person watching cheered and hollered, all four runs came in.  Alex was not only given the game ball for the walk off grand slam, but he got to keep his home run ball too.

NALL Orioles Fade into Giants' Sunset

DATE:     Wednesday May 14, 2008

GAME:   Junior Giants (23) – NALL Orioles (9)

REPORTER:  Jill Erickson

It took over 2 hours and the setting sun for the NCLL Giants to finish off the NALL Orioles 23-9 at sunset of their 5:30pm game at Newark Jr. High. The Bay Area heat wave allowed fans a rare comfortable game in Newark instead of bundling up in jackets.  Giants starter Zuri Chu-Hall celebrated his birthday throwing 25 pitches for his game win.  Leading  6-0 after 2 innings, the Giants batters decided to give Chu-Hall a 13 run salute.  The official time-keeper fell asleep as the Giants brought 19 batters up in the top of the 3rd, scoring 13 runs on 9 hits and 5 walks on 3 NALL pitchers. Chris Erickson and Sam Banducci each had 2 hits that inning. Chu-Hall turned over his mound to Gary Williams with a 19-0 lead.  That was more than enough for the win. Tyler Brown and Luis Rodriguez also practiced pitching in the next 2 innings. Brandon Ridge came in to finish the 5th inning and the game before the sun set. Chu-Hall batted 3 for 6 with 6 RBIs, Rodriguez went 2-2, and Banducci was 3-5. Alec Ferber went 2 for 3 with 3 walks and 3 RBIs, while Josh Rozul was 2-3 and scored all 4 times at the plate.

GAME: Minor B Royals v A's
REPORTER: Dana Casey
The place to be on Monday, April 28 was at the minor field at NCLL.  The Minor B Royals were set to play the A's, the champions of the 1st half of the season.  In the first 10 games of NCLL's minor B season, the A's only lost one game, to the Cardinals.  The Royals and A's were ready to play, and boy did it show on the field.  There weren't many strikeouts, instead the outs came from good plays on the field.  Right away in the 1st inning, Royals player, Joey Jorgens, smacked a ball to left field earning him a double.  Zach MacDonald, the A's catcher, made a rare out in this level, and caught a foul tip for the 3rd out.  In the 4th inning, Sam Braun from the Royals also had a double which included an RBI.  By the end of the 4th inning the score was 6-7, with the A's ahead.  Royals really wanted this win.  In the 5th inning, Daniel Santos, Tanner Granzella & Sam Braun had RBI's, with Sam hitting another double brining in 2 runs. REPORTER:  Jill Erickson

Wednesday, April 23

The last game of the first half didn't mean anything to either team, so the Giants and Cubs both had some fun and mixed it up.  Starters sat on the bench and rookies pitched for both teams. Nine of the 10 pitchers were making their season debut, with the point being to throw strikes and let the defense do it's job. The Giants sent Chris Erickson, Gary Williams, Austin Miller, Tyler Brown and Luis Rodriguez to the mound.  The Cubs countered with Kurtis Hubbell, Gene Horecka, John Normoyle, Angelo Propes, and Tyler Macadory. Giants' Marquis Cogshell caught 2 infield flies playing the whole game at 2nd base, and Josh Rozul made a catch in his center field debut.  Sam Banducci made the biggest catch of the game in right field for the 3rd out leaving the Cubs bases loaded. Propes, Jordan Ferriera, Ira Horecka, and Jake Bachelder put together 4 hits for 2 Cubs runs in the bottom of the 1st. All the Giants had a hit, and 9 of 11 players had an RBI.

Royals Battle the A's in Minor B Action

DATE: Saturday April 19, 2008
GAME: Minor B A's vs Royals
REPORTER: Dana Casey
This was a big game for the Royals.  They really needed this win to tie up the A's.  However, in the 1st & 4th inning the Royals defense was gone.  The top of the 1st inning started with a bang for the A's.  They quickly scored 5 runs without any outs.  With the Royals up to bat they were able to bring home two runners  thanks to Thomas Poniatowski and Daniel Santos.  The A's had their star infielder, Denny Rich, making two of the 3 outs at second base.  During the 2nd inning Joey Jorgens helped pump up the Royals with a double play at 3rd base. At the bottom of the inning Josh Kirk, at second, threw to Evan Embrey at 1st for the first out and Denny, now at short stop, caught a fly ball for the 2nd out. The 3rd inning was a quick inning due to good defense on both sides.  Both the Royals and A's pitchers, Matthew McKinney and Ali Jackson, had all the action on the field.  They both stopped balls and assisted with 2 outs each.  The A's hiked up the score in the 4th inning with again 5 runs and only 1 out, the inning ended with a score of 12-4.  The A's are sure enjoying that 5 run rule, again it was achieved in the 5th inning.  The Royals were able to come back  with 4 runs. Including a double by Ryan Caravantes.  In the final inning of the game, the Royals defense came alive too late in the game.  Ryan, in right field threw to 2nd baseman, Joey, for the 1st out.  The 2nd out was due to teamwork between Daniel and Bradley Slater, and the Royals catcher, Sam Braun,  tagged a runner at home preventing a score for the 3rd out.  Royals player, Joey Jorgens hit a double at the bottom of the 6th.
The Royals game ball went to Bradley Slater and the Game pin went to Sam Braun.
The A's won 19-6  cinching the 1st half win of the Minor B season.

GAME: Minor B Cardinals vs Royals

GAME:  Jr. Cubs vs. MSJLL A's
REPORTER:      Deneene Mariscal
The NCLL Junior Cubs get off to a great start in their 8th game of the season with John Normoyle making a phenomenal catch on deep left field. The pitching of Sam Sanchez of the MSJLL A's and Jaramy Jacobs of the NCLL Cubs was terrific through-out the entire game. Both pitchers did a great job of getting the ball over the plate and letting their defense work with them. The score remained 0-0 until the bottom of the 4th inning when the Cubs began to come alive. Nico Estevez started off the inning with a base hit and immediately put himself in scoring position. The first RBI of the game would come from Cub Austin Schreiber who had a beautiful line-drive base hit to right center-field which allowed Nico to score. With no outs and the Cubs on the board the second Cub RBI of the inning would come from a base hit from third baseman Angelo Propes. With 2 outs the Cubs would score one more time with Jaramy Jacobs coming home on a base hit from Jordan Fereira who played an excellent game at first base after returning from an injury. In the scorching heat the Cubs managed to hold the MSJLL A's to 2 runs to the seal the deal and give the Cubs their 5th win of the season. Great job Cubs!

GAME:  Junior Giants (7) – MSJLL Mets (6)

REPORTER:      Jill Erickson

Weeknight 5pm games are always in jeopardy of darkness in the first half of the season. Our Giants led this game 2-1 through 5 innings at Mission San Jose, and the game could have gone either way with dusk approaching.

Pitching and defense by both teams was strong, but ultimately it was the offense hitting and taking advantage of errors that won the game. Marshall Duffy pitched a strong 5 innings for the Giants, with Josh Rozul relieving to win the game.

The Mets mounted their attack in the bottom of the 6th, scoring 4 runs on 3 walks, a hit and 3 Giants errors. The Giants responded with 5 runs on 3 hits in the top of the 7th, to lead 7-5.

Time is now of the essence as the sun is starting to set.  Can our Giants get through the 7th inning and win, or does the game get called for darkness and revert back to the 6th inning so the Giants lose?  Austin Miller caught the 1st out in center. Mets double and score a run. Tyler Brown caught a line drive to 2nd and just about doubled the runner off 2nd to end the game.  No problem, the next batter popped up to Alec Ferber to end the game.

Brandon Ridge went 3 for 4, while Chris Erickson had 3 RBIs.  GIANTS WIN 7-6 !!

The Irvington HS JV team practiced late, so our 5:30 game was delayed...... but that didn't delay our Giants jumping off to a 3-0 start with 8 batters in the top of the 1st against the Fremont American A's.  That was pretty much the game, though we played for a couple more hours before being called for darkness with the NCLL Giants leading 7-0. The umpire tried his best to move the game along... batter up; don't throw the ball around after strikeouts; Zuri needs a belt; stay on 3rd Coach during a time out; the wandering lady needs to hurry off the outfield; what time is sunset??

After the 3 run lead in the 1st, the Giants added 4 runs on 8 batters in the 5th to secure their 7-0 victory.  Zuri Chu-Hall pitched 4 innings of 3 hit ball to 17 batters, and Josh Rozul finished the last 4 batters in the 5th.

A's break out vs. Royals in Minor B Action

DATE:  Saturday March 29, 2007
GAME:  Minor B A's vs Royals
REPORTER:  Dana Casey
The third game of the season and the first time playing the A's, the Royals were looking forward to a challenging game.  The first inning started out with high hopes for the Royals.  Right away Ryan Caravantes, Royals first baseman, caught a fly ball for the first out.  The A's had two hits from Patrick Paraiso and Jake Jackson.  Thomas Poniakowski of the Royals made the third out catching a fly ball at the pitcher's mound.
During the bottom of the inning, Thomas and Alex Rodriguez had hits. Awesome teamwork between the A's pitcher, Patrick, and 1st baseman, Evan Embrey allowed for 2 of the three outs.
The 2nd inning brought outstanding defense from the Royals.  They didn't give the A's a chance for a hit.  There were two good plays.  Both by Bradley Slater at first base with assists from Alex (3rd baseman) and Sam Braun (pitcher).  With the Royals at bat, EJ Santos and Daniel Santos smacked the ball to get on base.  The A's kept the hits to a minimum with outs by first baseman, Jake and their second baseman.
The third inning went to the A's.  They had 8 hits with RBI's by Jake, Eli Denmead,  Drew Matthews, and Sam Hoeven. Sam, the Royals 3rd baseman, made the only play in the outfield by tagging a runner.
At the bottom of the inning, the Royals had two hits and again, Evan from the A's made two outs and Eli tagged a runner at 3rd base.  During the 4th inning, both teams scored a run.  At the top of the inning, Daniel, the Royals pitcher, threw  to Sam at home plate to prevent another run. Alex earned the game pin for catching a fly ball at short stop. The top of the 5th inning ended with 2 outs due to the five run rule for the A's. Even though 5 runs were scored, the Royals 2nd baseman, Colton Casey with help from Thomas and Alex, made the two outs.  As for the A's, they must be working on catching those fly balls.  In the 5th & 6th inning, 4 of the 6 outs were made by keen eyes and great catches from Matthew Leung (twice), Ali Jackson, and Jake. 5 runs were scored by the A's, making the final score 15 - 1 A's won.

Brandon Ridge No-Hitter Shuts Out Pirates
DATE:  Saturday March 29, 2008 GAME:  Junior Giants (10) – Pirates (0)REPORTER:      Jill Erickson Our NCLL Giants have something to smile about, even as spring break comes to an end.  Facing 19 batters in 5 innings, Brandon Ridge only let one fly ball leave the infield in route to a no-hitter and the Giants' 10-0 shut out of the Pirates.  Ridge got support from his infielders to make the big plays that left the base runners stranded.  In the 2nd inning, 1st baseman Zuri Chu-Hall took a soft line drive and stepped on his bag for an unassisted double play. Pirates pitcher Parker Knight confused Giants batters early, until the bottom of the order came through in the 2nd.  With 2 outs, Austin Miller and Chris Erickson had consecutive hits, and Erickson stole his way around the bases after his RBI hit.

The Giants extended their lead to 8-0 with 3 runs in each the 3rd and 4th.  Josh Rozul and Marshall Duffy each had doubles in the 3rd, with Chu-Hall contributing a 2-RBI double in the 4th.  Miller and Erickson scored the last 2 runs in the 5th with no outs to end the game.
