VOLUNTEER UMPIRES

I know many of you always ask "why do we use volunteer umps not pay for them?"  One truth is Little League would like all their chartered leagues to use volunteers for everything.   Another reason is economics, it cost $70 a game for 2 umpires.   We play at least 3 games a day the would requires umps during the week and 10 games on Saturdays.   That would come to about $1,400 a week for umps.  We play 10 weeks, so we are looking at an umpire bill of around $14,000, we just don't have that kind of money.    Will our volunteers miss some calls?  Of course they will.   Will the paid umpires miss some calls? Of course they will.   Please remember just because they are paid, doesn't mean they are better.    We at NAS will train anyone that wants to volunteer and even get you information on the "paid" organizations so you can go make some extra money.   So please, if you have some time, please come on out and give umping a try.    Just remember it is all about the kids!
