HOLIDAY WEEKEND-NO GAMES HERE, BUT RANGERS ADVANCE IN COOPERSTOWN TOURNEY
Happy Independence Weekend, as we celebrate 233 years as a nation. We hope you're enjoying the weekend with family and friends.
While there are no league games on Sunday, July 5, several league players are ompeting in the NABA Hall of Fame Classic at Cooperstown, NY. The Florida Rangers, managed by Leo Merced, lost a 7-4 decision to the Rochester (NY) Warriors on Friday, July 3.
The Rangers made Sunday's playoff, though, with a pair of victories on July 4th. They beat the Main Street Pub A's 6-4 with the Cubs' Mike Alfinez pitching them to the win, then they completed a suspended game in which they topped the Triple Threat team from South Jersey 6-0 on a one hitter by the Royals' Kenny Rua. That game was suspended on Thursday in the bottom of the fifth inning.
As a result of their two wins, the Rangers were seeded fourth and are playing the unbeaten and top seeded New York/New Jersey Cardinals (3-0) in the semifinal Sunday morning. Should they win they would advance to the championship game in the afternoon.
The Rangers roster consists of Palm Beach League players from several teams, along with players from other leagues, who have played with the Rangers in other tournaments. Representing the Rangers is Jose Pena Jr. From the Cubs, Tom Brodrick and Mike Alfinez. The Braves have supplied Steve Grove and Pat Wilson. Emilio Vargas (Cardinals), Marcel Castaneda (So. Florida Beach Bums) and Kenny Rua (Royals) round out the local contingent at the Baseball Shrine.
