Welcome to the NABA Palm Beach, Florida League
TWENTIETH YEAR, SEASON NUMBER FORTY
SCOREBOARD - SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2012
AT SANTALUCES COMPLEX, LANTANA
When the dust settled last Sunday, the top two teams in both divisions came out best and will head for the league championship games on Sunday, February 12 at the Santaluces Complex in Lantana.
Chamos and the Home Run Sports Manatees scored easy victories in the AAA semifinals on Sunday. The top seeded, regular season champion Chamos blasted the Crushers 13-0 after the fifth ranked Crushers had upset the number four Twins 9-3 in their quarterfinal match.
The second seeded Manatees had no trouble in ousting the number six Titans 9-1. The Titans, however, had to survive an 18-inning upset win over the number three Florida Thunder 6-5.
Chamos will be gunning for their fifth 18AAA championship in next Sunday's 1:30PM title tilt. The newly renamed Manatees are seeking their first, although the majority of their players have been part of other AAA championship teams.
The Sugar Kings, who went unbeaten in 14 regular season games, will be heavily favored in their championship match against the first year Industriales Sunday at 9:30AM. The top ranked Sugar Kings will go for their third AA championship against the second seeded Industriales, who bear the same team name as one of Cuba's most famous team. The Industriales are considered the New York Yankees of Cuba because of their many Cuban League championships.
The Sugar Kings rolled over the Tigers 11-1 in the semifinals, but the Industriales had to go 13 innings for a come from behind win over the third seeded Blue Jays.
Quarterfinal games produced some memorable results, including that league record Titans win over the Thunder. The game went 18 innings and lasted 5 hours and 35 minutes, both league records. It was finally decided by an RBI double by Christian Cancio, who had two previous doubles and a single. It negated an unbelievable 14 inning relief job by the Thunder's Manny Olivero, who struck out 21 batters. Olivero left the mound in that 18th inning and did not get the loss.
The Titans' Jonathan Perigny turned in an unbeliable relief job of his own to get the win in that game. He went eight innings of scoreless baseball, giving up only one hit in relief of starter Anthony Munson, who pitched ten innings, and had a 5-0 lead until the Thunder tied it with late inning runs.
In other quarterfinal action, the Blue Jays rallied from a 6-3 deficit to outlast the sixth seeded Expos 10-8. Dwayne Cabral's two run double put the Blue Jays ahead to stay. And, Steven Hibbs threw a 15 strikeout complete game victory over Gerrold Madijin and the fifth seeded Rays in their Qfinal meeting.
