BEACH BUMS AND PIRATES ARE 5-0; ROCKHOUNDS AND RANGERS BOTH HAVE FOUR WINS AND A TIE
After disappointing in the recent NABA Florida World Series, the South Florida Beach Bums resumed their winning ways last Sunday with a 9-5 18AAA league win over the Brewers at Seminole Palms Park. Matt Schnelly improved to 4-0, striking out ten in six innings and bashing a run scoring double. The Beach Bums had only five hits, but Brewers' hurlers issued twelve walks.
Both the second place Rockhounds and third place Leones notched victories to stay hot on the heels of the Beach Bums. The Hounds rolled to a 12-3 win over the Royals at Dyer Park as southpaw Brian Holden chalked up his fourth win against no losses. Rob Wiley clubbed a double and two singles, driving in three runs to earn Player of the Week honors. Teammates Chris Allen, Danny LaPerna and Brian Fitzsimmons also had three hits apiece as the Rockhounds improved to 4-0-1.
The Leones' Kyle Merritt outdueled the Warriors' Luis Ramos, pitching a two hit shutout to score a 2-0 victory at Dyer Park. Merritt locked up Pitcher of the Week honors, fanning seven for his third win in as many decisions. Jose Corea and manager Fernando Miranda pulled off a double steal for one of the team's two runs. The other came on a sacrifice fly by Hector Gerena. Kyle Young had the only two hits for the Warriors. The Leones are 4-1 in fall league play.
Rounding out the 18AAA schedule, Chamos broke open a close game with a five run 7th inning to beat the White Sox 9-1 at Seminole Palms Park. Victor Prieto and Willie Martinez each had two hits, with Prieto knocking in two runs. Jonathan Martinez won his first decision, with six strong innings. Losing pitcher Drew Davis and Jason Davis both had three hits for the Sox.
The Pirates won a 4-3 cliffhanger over the Mariners at the Santaluces Complex, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the 9th on a bases loaded, one out single by Jessinton Ordonez. Damon Gammons turned in a sparkling relief job, striking out the side with no outs and the bases loaded in the 8th inning, earning the league's Pitcher of the Week honors. He went two innings after taking over for Jason Plocek, who pitched well but got a no decision. The win keeps the Pirates in the unbeaten, untied category at 5-0 and in first place in the 18AA League.
The second place Rangers (4-0-1) kept pace by drubbing the Tigers 10-3 in the morning game at Santaluces. Jose Jimenez won the league's Player of the Week award with two doubles, a single and two runs knocked in. Jose Rivera also had three hits for the Rangers to keep them a notch behind the Pirates.
At Dave Manzo Field, the Dodgers finally got into the win column with a 9-3 verdict over the Marlins, taking advantage of nine walks and nine hit batsmen. Tim McManus led the hitters with three singles, and Justin Irby drove in three runs with a double and a single. In the morning game at Manzo Field, the Sugar Kings edged the winless Braves 6-5 as Nestor Sanjurjo cashed in three runs with a pair of doubles and Joe Perez had two hits and an RBI.
Topping this week's agenda, the Beach Bums visit the once tied Rockhounds in a battle of unbeatens Sunday morning at Santaluces. The defending fall league 18AAA champion Chamos, who got back to the .500 mark last Sunday at 2-2-1, host the Warriors, who keep improving from week to week in their first foray into the 18AAA ranks. That one is an afternoon game at Seminole Palms. The Royals are at the White Sox in the afternoon game at Santaluces, while Leones entertains the Brewers in the morning game at Seminole Palms.
The Pirates hope to make it a 6-0 start Sunday morning at Dave Manzo Field when they host the Dodgers, coming off their first win last week. The Rangers visit the Marlins in the morning at Dyer Park, with the Marlins (3-2) hoping to bounce back from a poor showing last week against the Dodgers. Two teams on losing streaks will try to recover when the winless Braves visit the Mariners Sunday afternoon at Dyer. The Mariners have dropped their last three games after opening the fall season with two straight wins. The other afternoon game is at Dave Manzo Field, where the Sugar Kings are the home team against the first year Tigers.
