Astros offense gets going
The Fairfax Astros offense kept putting the ball into play against the Alexandria A's, and handed the A's only their second loss of the season - but it was a doozy, 11-1. Both Lohrmans spent time on the mound for the A's and both were ill treated. The Astros' Tokarz went 8 innings and allowed only 4 hits to get the win.

Barons come from behind, Blues, Cardinals and A. Senators have little trouble
The Metro Storm struck quickly against the Falls Church Baron last night and took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. After that, both offenses went quiet. The Storms' Julian no-hit the Barons until the bottom of the 7th. The Barons duo of Rice and Davis held their own, allowing no runs after the first as they combined for 10 K's. The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Storm until the bottom of the 8th when the Barons' Mageras, bad hamstring and all, smacked a bases loaded double to give the Barons their first lead of the game. The Barons left the 8th with a 4-1 lead and Davis closed out the top of the 9th with 3 quick strike outs preserving the Barons 4-1, win.
No other action last night proved as competitive as the NV Blues beat the Senators Baseball Club, 19-5, the Alexandria/Arlington Senators defeated the Vipers, 11-3, and the DC Cardinals won against Murphy's Green Sox, 10-3.

Races get interesting
The Alexandria A's and the Falls Church Newshounds have had some real battles over the years, and today was pretty much the same. The A's got a 2 run homer from Omeir as part of a three run first inning. They needed that as the teams played even the rest of the way, with Whippich going 8 for the Newshounds who just could not overcome that first inning, and lost, 5-2.
Murphy's Green Sox also fought hard today, gaining a split with the NV Blues while playing with only 8. Green Sox took the first game, 8-7 behind a strong pitching performance from Murray and great offensive performance from Cain. The second game was dominated by solid Blues pitching, and an 11-2 Blues win.
The Falls Church Barons took on the AAA Fairfax Astros today and played them even, as the teams tied at 2 after 10 innings. The Barons struck first in the bottom of the 3rd when Hussey doubled to left and scored off a Rodriguez groundball hit to the right side of the field. The Astros responded quickly in the top off the fourth when Berio scored of a double by the Astros' Lee. The Barons' Nelson and the Astros Ryan then hooked up in a scintillating pitchers duel. The Barons threatened once again in the top of the 7th, but were unable to muscle any runs in after having the bases loaded. The Barons did breakthrough in the 8th when Hussey singled and eventually scored from third on an errant throw from the Astros' catcher. The Barons' Nelson took his 1 hitter into the bottom of the 9th trying for a complete game win. But the Astros' Viczorek singled to start the inning. The Astros then got men on 1st and 2nd with one out. Nelson, tiring a bit, managed to induce what seemed to be the game ending double play ground ball but an error on the throw to first allowed Viczorek to score and tie the game. Extra innings saw both teams threaten but neither was able to push the winning run in. Time limit ended the game in a 2-2 tie.
The Alexandria/Arlington Senators took two from the Alexandria Attakids, 9-3 and 6-5.
The Tenleytown Brewers took two from the DC Cardinals, winning the first in 9 innings, 5-4, after the Cardinals took a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth. In the second game, the Brewers got three runs in the second as a result of a dropped fly ball, and that was the margin of their 4-1 win.
The Northern Virginia Knights beat the Metro Storm, 4-2.

A's, A's, and more A's
Are the Alexandria A's peaking too soon? A's 15, Senators Baseball Club 2. Lohrman got the win, and T. Bell hit 2 HR, including one over the scoreboard in centerfield. Omeir added another HR for the A's.
The NV Blues and the Fairfax Astros had another of their closely fought games with the Blues winning, 6-3.

VIRGINIA SWEEPS ALL STAR GAMES - Congratulations to all ALL STAR players!
The AA contest was the better game. The squads were very evenly matched with neither team ever leading by more than one at any point and the lead changed hands about as often as it could have done. The score stood 0-0 until the VA side took a 1 run lead in the fourth on a rundown play that allowed the runner from 3rd to score. After 4 shut out innings, the Barons' Hussey turned the ball over to his teammate Lord in the 5th. The WARBL team quickly took advantage of the pitching change to produce 2 runs and a 2-1 lead. Both teams scored again, and WARBL led 3-2 going into the 7th. However, in the 7th, the VA side made all three outs on non batting plays; two caught stealing and one picked off. The VA side capitalized on the momentum gained after WARBL ran itself out of any chance of scoring in the seventh by scoring the tying run on a Barons' Caylor RBI single. VIRGINIA then took the lead on a SAC fly by the Storms' Chavez, when the WARBL catcher could not quite handle the throw from the outfield that actually beat the runner, but was just a little off line. The Barons closer Mardeusz took the mound in the 9th and quickly K'd the first two WARBL batters. However things got dicey from there. A Grays hitter smacked a hit into Right Field and after a walk and a hit batter, the bases were loaded. But then Mardeusz struck out the last WARBL batter swinging at three straight fast balls to earn the save. The Barons' Nelson got the win in the thrilling 4-3 VA AA victory.
In the AAA game, the VIRGINIA side got two in the first inning on a botched play. With a runner on second, the VIRGINIA batter hit a comebacker to the WARBL pitcher who turned and had the runner hung up between second and third. However, in the ensuing rundown, an errant throw from the second baseman allowed that runner to score and the hitter to advance to third. The next VIRGINIA batter hit a fly to right that was just deep enough to be an RBI SAC, and WARBL started the second inning down 2-0. Those two proved to be all the VIRGINIA side needed, although they scored two more late in the game. The VIRGINIA pitchers keep WARBL from generating much on offense. In WARBL's only real chance of scoring in the third inning, Havrilla had a nice defensive play in center field, easily gunning down Leonard as he tried to score from 2nd on Saul's single. Saul had a couple of hits for WARBL, but VIRGINIA's Berio was the Game MVP, going 3-3 with 1 RBI, 2 SB, and 1 R. Tharp got the start and the win for VIRGINIA, and Bell and Sandoval each struck out the side in their 1 IP in 4th and 9th, respectively. Casagrande, Dugan, and Bruton also pitched, with all VA pitchers combining for the shutout and 15 K's in the 4-0 win for VIRGINIA.
In the Home Run Derby after the game, Tommy Bell edged out Greg King in the final round playoff.

Astros and Storm sweep
Has the 'Storm' arrived?!
The Metro Storm won the first game of their DH against the Vipers on Sunday, 4-1. Chavez pitched a complete game one hitter, and Velasquez hit his 3rd home run of the season to provide the winning margin.
The Storm also won the second game, 10-3, but only after first falling behind 3-1. Garcia ignited the Storm team by leading off the 3rd inning with a base hit and then stealing 2nd, 3rd and home! Later in the game Julian bolted his 4th home run over right center for his first grand slam of the season. The Storm is now on a five game winning streak. Can they keep it up against one of their arch rivals the Newshounds on Thursday? We will see.
The Fairfax Astros may also be waking up! Sunday they swept the Northern Virginia Knights, 6-4 and 4-1. The Astros' Ryan threw the first 6 of game 1 while CasaGrande threw the first 6 innings of game 2 with Crossley getting the save in both contests.

Barons still undefeated
The Falls Church Barons got two today against the Washington Grays. Game one was a battle of Ace's. Nelson of the Barons threw a 1 hitter and the Gray's Lazeroff threw a 4 hitter. But two of the Barons' hits were dingers. Maradeusz hit a 3 run shot and Pearson had a solo, and the Barons took the first game, 5 to 0.
The Barons' Hussey went the distance in game 2, and he also helped himself at bat, combining with Rodrigues and Davis for 5 RBI as the Barons won the second game, 9 to 5.
The Alexandria A's got two early, but that was all they got as Lohrman hooked up with the NV Blues' Dugan in their game at Cora Kelly. The Blues got one in the eighth and a couple of runners on in the ninth, but could not catch up, and the A's won, 2-1.
The Tenleytown Brewers' Johnsen hit a 2 run HR in the first against Murphy's Green Sox, and that was all the Brewers needed as Chwert tossed a one hitter for a 5-0 win.
In the second of the Brewers/Green Sox DH, Sargeant and Smith combined for a 2 hitter, and the Brewers completed the sweep with a 5-1 win.
The D.C. Bears pulled to within a half game of first place in the WARBL AA Divison by taking two from the Alexandria Attakids, 10-1 and 18-2.
The DC Cardinals finally got some offense going, beating the Senators Baseball Club, 10-2.

A's and Blues in close game
Tharp went the distance for the A's tonight, but it was almost too much. The teams each had leads early until the A's went up 5-2 in the seventh, and that was the score going into the bottom of the ninth. However, the Blues got two in the ninth and had the tying run at second and the winning run at first before the game ended, 5-4, A's. Wagner got a clutch go ahead RBI in the seventh that put the A's up for good.
 | | KEEP OUR FIELDS PLAYABLE THE RIGHT WAY! | |
FIELD MAINTENANCE AND BAD WEATHER POLICY
FIELDS - All managers must bring at least one rake to any field we use, except for Regional Park fields. BOTH TEAMS are required to assist in raking our fields after EVERY GAME in order to leave the field in excellent condition for the next team or league using the field.
This rule applies to all fields except for Regional Park fields which have their own maintenance people.
DUGOUTS - Whether we are at a High School field or a Regional Park field, all dugouts must be cleaned out after every game. Do not leave broken bats, water bottles, dead chickens or any other trash in or around the dugouts. Make sure they are cleaned out before you leave. If you find a dugout full of trash when you arrive for a game, please report that to the League, but please do not allow that to prevent you from cleaning up the dugout before you leave, i.e. go ahead and clean up the other's mess.
INCLEMENT WEATHER - We have two equally strong policy rules that we must keep in mind, particularly in the spring and fall, when weather is more likely to be a problem. We depend on our manager's judgment when weighing and implementing these two inherently conflicting rules.
The first rule is to play all games if possible. For PLAYERS, that means check this web site 2 hours before game time on days when the weather seems to be bad. IF YOUR GAME HAS NOT BEEN CANCELLED BY THAT TIME YOU SHOULD GO TO THE FIELD. Your game is likely to be played.
The second rule is that we do not damage our fields by playing when we should not do so. If, at game time, your steps leave a sunken impression when walking either on the dirt or the grass, that field is too soft to take play. If recent rain has left water in a basepath, but you think you may get the field ready by game time, remove isolated standing water in a basepath on a field that is otherwise playable by punching holes in the middle of the puddle to allow the water to drain down. You can then rake up and down the basepath (never from side to side) until the area is dried out.
NEVER SWEEP WATER OUT OF THE BASEPATH OR ONTO THE GRASS! NEVER REMOVE MUD OR MUDDY WATER FROM A FIELD! If the puncture drain and up and down sweeping method does not work, then you simply cannot play that day.
We depend on our managers to make judgments at the field that weigh these two rules and determine when play may go on if conditions deteriorate just prior to or during a game.

Alcohol Policy - Message from the League President
Beer and baseball have been linked probably since the invention of the game. In every professional baseball stadium the Anheuser-Busch sign is the largest advertising sign in the stadium. Having a beer after a game is a time honored tradition - very close to an inalienable right! BUT, at every Location where we play, ALL alcohol is banned. No alcohol is allowed on the premises, including parking lots, at any time. It is actually a criminal offense.
In addition, if anyone in our League is ever caught on any of our Locations with alcohol at any time, there is a very real risk that all of us would lose the right to play ball at that or any other Location in the same jurisdiction. Therefore, time-honored tradition or not, we cannot tolerate any alcohol being brought onto the premises of any Location where we play. It cannot be there, whether opened or unopened, imbibed there or merely being held for later. No exceptions. Not in your hand. Not in your cooler. Not in your vehicle. No exceptions.
So - if you are caught with alcohol in your possession, and 'possession' will be very loosely defined, at any of our Locations at any time, you WILL BE SUSPENDED. If there is another offense, the penalty will increase, and will include a fine, a longer suspension or even banishment from the League. Fail to adhere to this policy at your peril.

BAD WEATHER POLICY - Montgomery, PG County and Cora Kelly Rain-out numbers
There is a so-called rain-out number for Fairfax County fields, but it is useless. It is simply not kept up. For Fairfax County, unless there is a general closing of ALL fields, the League and individual managers must make all decisions as to whether or not a game is to be cancelled.
This is NOT true with regard to Montgomery County and Prince George's County Regional Park fields, and for Cora Kelly field. At those fields, the field supervisors make the decisions and update the 'rain-out' numbers as appropriate.
HOWEVER, FOR PLAYERS - whether you are scheduled at a Fairfax County or any other field, unless you either see a cancellation notice on THIS WEBSITE, or one of the numbers below says a field is cancelled, you MUST GO TO YOUR GAME SITE AT GAME TIME, no matter how bad the weather is where you live, work or otherwise start out. We have had games played on fields where there was rain, sleet or snow a few blocks away, but nothing at THAT field.
Here are the rain-out numbers for all Montgomery County and Prince George's County Regional Park fields, and for Cora Kelly field:
Blair HS 301-670-8105
Blake HS 301-774-6611
Cora Kelly 703-883-4698
LF Cosca #2 and #4 301-927-0822
Martin Luther King 301-622-4018
Ridge Road Park 301-972-0723
Shirley Povich (Cabin John) 301-299-1975
Olney 301-774-6611
