Twins win, Blues redux, SenBBC gets offensive
Last night the TC Twins defeated the Alexandria A's 10-8, in a game that could reasonably be called BOTH a pitcher's duel AND a slugfest. Kline, Weaver, and Laub pitched well for the Twins keeping the hot A's bats just cool enough. S. Lohrman and J. Bell pitched a great game for the A's. Everytime the TC Twins scored the A's responded with their very next AB's. At the last, the A's came up just short. Once again Omeir, who seems fully recovered and all the way back from his devestating injury, hit one out for the A's. A great fan turn out for what has fast become a Twins tradition, Tropical Smoothie night, may have broken the attendance records for a regular season DC Wood NABA League game (crowd estimated at about 100 fans). All on the edge of their seats throughout the night!
Tuesday's NV Blues/DC Cardinals game was a virtual replay of their game last week, with one big Blues inning the difference. The Cardinals took the early lead with a first pitch home run by Plouffe. The Cardinals scored again in the first for a two run lead that did not last the inning as the Blues responded with two in the bottom of the first. A five run fourth did in the Cardinals, however. Both teams scored one additional run, but the end was an 8-3 Blues win.
The Arlington Redbirds had been soaring of late, but the Senators Baseball Club brought them to earth with a 17-2 pounding.

Turnabout for Bears - Brewers win thriller
Last Saturday, the Bears were the victims of a Senators Baseball Club comeback, when they gave up four runs in the ninth inning to lost 8-7. Last night, turnabout was their answer, as they put 3 up in their ninth to defeat the Carpool Green Sox, 10-9.
The Tenleytown Brewers beat the Alexandria A's Perez, 9 - 6. Axtell had a 2 run double in the 4th that gave the Brewers a 3 run lead. Johnsen tacked on a HR in the 7th to make it 9 - 3. But it looked to possibly have gone for naught in the ninth, when Brewers errors and walks loaded the bases for the A's, and a two out bases loaded double seemed to extend the rally. But a strong relay to home from the Brewer's Whitener ended the rally with the last out being made at home plate. Brewers 9, A's 6.
The Washington Grays beat the Falls Church Newshounds, 11-4. The Senators Baseball Club beat the Arlington/Alexandria Senators, 12-8. The Arlington Redbirds and the Vipers could not resolve their previous tie, when neither team could score in their one run play play-off, however, the Redbirds were unleashed after that, winning the scheduled game in an 18-1 blow-out.

WARBL wins All Star Game
At 7:30pm, at Cora Kelly, the sun was out and the field was in perfect condition to start the All Star Game. The first batter, the A's' King, walked, then stole second. Then within minutes, the clouds came, lightening struck and the rain came. Much rain came, and quickly. It appeared another game in this waterlogged season was going to wash away, but, in a triumph of hope over experience - certainly experience for this season - the teams got the tarps on the mound and the plate area just in case the rain stopped. Then, as if to reward our players for caring, the rain ended as quickly as it had come. Two years ago, there would have been no game at Cora Kelly. But the work Alexandria has done on this field in the last couple of years has transformed it from one of the worst draining fields in the area to one of the best. Both teams quickly went to work on the dirt on the baselines, and after a delay of 70 minutes, play resumed. Still in the first, Tommy Bell's single with King then on third knocked in the first run of the game. Even with the delay, the teams got in eight full innings before the lights went out, but the game was effectively over after the top of one. Both teams got quality pitching. Both teams had some fine defensive play. But in the end it was the Tommy Bell show. Although the Cardinals' Jeffers got another WARBL RBI late, it was just icing on this cake out of the rain, as VIRGINIA failed to score at all. A significant part of that VIRGINIA scoring failure was Tommy Bell, the only pitcher from either side who went more than 2 innings. He shut down VIRGINIA over the last three, and thus ended with both the winning RBI and the save. WARBL 2, VIRGINIA 0.

Barons knock off Yankees
It is a long season, and the quality of play over-all in the League continues to improve - so no one really thought the North Yuma Yankees were actually going to run the table. But who would mar their perfect record remained in question until this night. It was truly still in question through 7, as the teams entered the eighth tied at 2. In the eighth, however, the Falls Church Barons put two runs across. When the Yankees could not respond in the ninth, they ended the night no longer unbeaten. Barons 4, Yankees 2.
Both the Metro Storm and the Vipers have had more than their share of ties this year. So, what could we expect when they met. At the time limit, Vipers 7, Storm 7.

Blues win
The NV Blues stepped in for the D.C. Diamonds as the DC Cardinals' opponent tonight. This game was over after one inning. Some walks, a couple of hit batsmen, and before the inning was over the Blues had a 4-0 lead. The teams played even after that in a game shortened by a rain delay. Blues 6, Cardinals 2.

Yankees stay unbeaten
The North Yuma Yankees and the NV Blues arrived at Madison this morning to a very poorly maintained field. The teams had to work for over an hour to get the field playable. The Yankees then won, 4-1, to keep their record unblemished.
The Alexandria A's and D.C. Diamonds also had field trouble. After the A's won the first game, 14-0, the teams were tied up at 3 after 3, when play had to be suspended because the lights at Cora Kelly failed to ignite. J. Bell had a dinger in the first game, and Lohrman went the distance, with 9 Ks.
The Washington Grays took two from the Vipers, with Lazeroff going the distance in the first game, 14-1 win. Lapris also pitched a complete game for the Grays second game, earning an 8-6 win.
The Arlington Redbirds took two from the D.C. Bears. The first game was a walk-over, when the Bears had only seven players at game time for the first game. Two Bears showed up in time to play the second game, and the Redbirds, who had exactly nine at both games, won 4-3. McCaleb got the win for the Redbirds.
The Falls Church Barons took two from the Navigators, 4-3, and 8-2.
The DC Cardinals and Tenleytown Brewers each batted the ball around all night at Barcroft, but the Brewers got a few more to fall, and scored more runs, winning both games, 11-7 and 8-3.
The Metro Storm beat the Alexandria/Arlington Senators, 12-6 in their first game. The second game ended with the teams tied at 6.
The TC Twins shut-out the Sneaky Weasels in their first game, winning 1-0. The Weasels got going in the second game, however, beating the Twins, 5-2.

Alcohol Policy - Message from the League President
Beer and baseball have been linked probably since the invention of the game. In every professional baseball stadium the Anheuser-Busch sign is the largest advertising sign in the stadium. Having a beer after a game is a time honored tradition - very close to an inalienable right! BUT, at every Location where we play, ALL alcohol is banned. No alcohol is allowed on the premises, including parking lots, at any time. It is actually a criminal offense.
In addition, if anyone in our League is ever caught on any of our Locations with alcohol at any time, there is a very real risk that all of us would lose the right to play ball at that or any other Location in the same jurisdiction. Therefore, time-honored tradition or not, we cannot tolerate any alcohol being brought onto the premises of any Location where we play. It cannot be there, whether opened or unopened, imbibed there or merely being held for later. No exceptions. Not in your hand. Not in your cooler. Not in your vehicle. No exceptions.
So - if you are caught with alcohol in your possession, and 'possession' will be very loosely defined, at any of our Locations at any time, you WILL BE SUSPENDED. If there is another offense, the penalty will increase, and will include a fine, a longer suspension or even banishment from the League. Fail to adhere to this policy at your peril.

BAD WEATHER POLICY - Montgomery, PG County and Cora Kelly Rain-out numbers
There is a so-called rain-out number for Fairfax County fields, but it is useless. It is simply not kept up. For Fairfax County, unless there is a general closing of ALL fields, the League and individual managers must make all decisions as to whether or not a game is to be cancelled.
This is NOT true with regard to Montgomery County and Prince George's County Regional Park fields, and for Cora Kelly field. At those fields, the field supervisors make the decisions and update the 'rain-out' numbers as appropriate.
HOWEVER, FOR PLAYERS - whether you are scheduled at a Fairfax County or any other field, unless you either see a cancellation notice on THIS WEBSITE, or one of the numbers below says a field is cancelled, you MUST GO TO YOUR GAME SITE AT GAME TIME, no matter how bad the weather is where you live, work or otherwise start out. We have had games played on fields where there was rain, sleet or snow a few blocks away, but nothing at THAT field.
Here are the rain-out numbers for all Montgomery County and Prince George's County Regional Park fields, and for Cora Kelly field:
Blair HS 301-670-8105
Blake HS 301-774-6611
Cora Kelly 703-883-4698
LF Cosca #2 and #4 301-927-0822
Martin Luther King 301-622-4018
Ridge Road Park 301-972-0723
Shirley Povich (Cabin John) 301-299-1975
Olney 301-774-6611

DRESSING FIELDS - After games and if field is wet from recent rain
Fields in Maryland are dressed for us, both before and after games, so nothing is required there except to police the area for trash. We DO NOT leave any trash in any dugout, even if it was there when you got there.
For fields in Fairfax, DC and Arlington, we must dress the field after every game. Our goal is to leave every field in BETTER shape than we find it. To that end, all teams MUST have at least one team field rake so that for every Fairfax, DC or Arlington game there are at least two rakes available if none can be found at the field.
After games we fill in all holes at home, on the mound, and at any bases. We also rake the infield dirt to leave it in good playing shape for the next use.
If at game time there has been rain, we adhere to the following:
1. If when walking on the field, you leave a footprint impression either in the grass or the dirt, that field is too wet to take play.
2. If you get out early and feel there is time for the field to dry with some work before game time, you can rake as needed in the dirt sections, but NO DIRTY WATER IS TO BE TAKEN FROM BASEPATHS - especially no dirty water is to be raked into the grass. Dirty water dries into mud, which then kills the grass! Water can be raked in such a way as to more evenly spread it out in the dirt so it will dry faster, but never take any mud off the field.
