MAJOR PLAYOFFS
* Friday, June 19, 2009 (Championship)
Homecraft 10 Mattern 4 - This final game for the championship was one that exhibited much offense, but in the end, defense stole the show. Homecraft started quickly with 3 consecutive singles in the 1st inning by Brannon McHugh, DJ Thommes and Austin Coughenour, scoring Brannon and giving Homecraft a 1-0 lead. Henry Gise singled for Mattern in the bottom of the inning and with 2 outs, Zack Plasmier hit a shot to deep center that was destined to leave the park and give Mattern the lead. Instead, DJ Thommes leaped and stole the ball from mid-air preserving Homecraft's precarious 1-run lead. Feeding off of DJ's catch, Homecraft went on an offensive tear knocking out 5 hits and scoring 5 runs in the top of the 2nd. Quinn Cassidy lead off the 2nd with a single up the middle, followed by an RBI double to left field by Chris Carlson scoring Ryan Ifkovitz. Jimmy Connolly and Davis Jones then hit back to back singles, scoring Carlson and setting up men on 1st and 2nd for Brannon McHugh who proceeded to hit a 3-run bomb to left center to make it 6-1.   Mattern got 1 back in the bottom of the 2nd on a solo shot by Matthew Gallagher which gave the Mattern a major boost. But, as Mattern was rallying with 2 men on and 2 outs, once again DJ Thommes came up with a big defensive save as Richie Windon smoked a "see ya" ball to deep left center that DJ snared before it had a chance to land and ended Mattern's rally. Homecraft tacked on another run in the top of the 3rd when Will Connolly led off the inning with a single, and was eventually driven home by an RBI single from Matty Arrabal. Mattern came back in the bottom of the 3rd with a run of their own on an RBI fielder's choice from Ian Lloyd knocking in Henry Gise. Mattern then added another run in the bottom of the 4th as Matty Schell started the inning off with a single and was driven home on a double by Scotty Davis, but once again Homecraft escaped without any further damage with a score of 7-3. In the top of the 5th, more defense came into play this time for Mattern. Jimmy Connolly and Davis Jones both singled for Homecraft with two outs bringing up Brannon McHugh who doubled to left center. Scotty Davis fielded the ball threw a bullet to Zach Plasmier who in turn threw a strike to catcher Richie Windon nailing Davis Jones at home. Mattern, however, wasn't able to turn the momentum back in their favor as Homecraft's Austin Coughenour came in to pitch a perfect 1-2-3 5th inning. Homecraft scored 2 insurance runs in the top of the 6th on Matty Arrabal's shot to center field plating DJ Thommes and Will Connolly who had both drawn walks. Mattern was able to put together a final rally in the bottom of the 6th as Matthew Hogan walked and scored on Richie Windon's double, but came up short as Austin Coughenour settled down, got the next two batters to end the rally and Homecraft won the 2009 Naamans Major League Championship. Homecraft congratulates Mattern on a great turnaround season and for a great battle in the championship series. Also, thanks to umpires Andy Sopirak, Don Sawyer and Brett Pierce for a superior job under tense conditions.

Mattern 7 Homecraft 6 - The weather held out just long enough for Mattern to take game 2 of the Majors championship series by a score of 7-6 and tie the series at a game a piece. The game was scoreless until the top of the third when Matthew Schell drew a walk, Richie Windon reached on an error, Henry Gise walked and Zack Plasmier hit a bases clearing triple to give Mattern a 3-0 lead. Ian Lloyd then singled to plate Plasmier to make it 4-0 going into the bottom of the third. Homecraft’s Jim Connolly then scored in the bottom 3rd to make a 4-1 ball game. Mattern added to their lead in the 5th when Scott Davis led off the inning with a solo homerun to dead center. Mattern then picked up 2 more runs in the inning on a single from Zack Plasmier, a triple from Ian Lloyd which he blasted down the 3rd base line, and an RBI single from Matthew Gallagher. Homecraft battled back in the bottom of the 5th when Jim Connolly singled, Davis Jones walked and Brannon McHugh singled to left and knocked in 2 more runs. Mattern held a 7-3 lead as they entered the 6th inning but Homecraft would not lay down as they loaded the bases and scored 3 more runs but fell just short of the miracle comeback. Zack Plasmier pitched 5 strong innings for Mattern allowing just 3 runs on 4 hits and struck out 6. Scott Davis and Richie Windon handled the closing duties. Windon picked up the save by popping up the last batter in the bottom of the 6th to end the game with the bases loaded. Zack Plasmier, Scott Davis and Ian Lloyd led the Mattern offense with 2 hits a piece. For Homecraft, Jim Connolly led the team with 2 hits and Brannon McHugh and Matty Arrabal also each picked up a hit. Jim Connolly, Davis Jones and Austin Coughenour shared the pitching duties and all threw well. With this win, Mattern ties the series at 1-1 and forces a game 3 Friday night at Heeney to determine the 2009 Majors Champion.

* Monday, June 15, 2009 (Championship)
Homecraft 10 Mattern 2 - Homecraft came out of the gates with a bang to take this first of 3 for the championship. Three consecutive hits highlighted the top of the first as Davis Jones doubled, and both Brannon McHugh and DJ Thommes singled. Austin Coughenour then drew a walk and after the smoke cleared, Homecraft had a 4-0 lead. Richie Windon got Mattern off to its start with a single to lead off the bottom of the first, then Henry Gise walked and Scott Davis followed with an RBI single making the score 4-1 after 1 inning. The 2nd inning went quietly for both teams, but Homecraft continued its offensive attack in the top of the 3rd as Davis Jones led off the inning with a solid single up the middle. DJ Thommes followed with a single and then Will Connolly knocked both runners in with a double to left field making the score 6-1. Homecraft tacked on another run in the top of the 5th as Brannon McHugh and Austin Coughenour both singled and DJ Thommes scored on a passed ball.   Scotty Davis lead off the bottom of the 5th with a single and eventually scored for Mattern on Matthew Gallagher's RBI single, but that would be all for Mattern as Brannon McHugh threw a gem for Homecraft giving up only those 2 runs on 5 hits and striking out 5 in 5 & 1/3 innings. Homecraft scored 3 more insurance runs in the top of the 6th as Davis Jones belted a 3-run bomb to dead center putting the game away for good. Austin Coughenour came in to keep Mattern in check and help Brannon earn his second win of the playoffs. Ian Lloyd got on base all 3 times he batted, including a rocket double down the line, and Matthew Schell was solid out of the 9-hole adding two base knocks for Mattern.

Mattern 6 Mascelli 2 - Mascelli took a 1-0 lead in the top of 1st, but Mattern responded in the bottom when Henry Gise scored on a Zack Plasmier double to tie the game at 1-1. The game stayed knotted at 1-1 until the bottom of the 3rd inning when Richie Windon hit a line drive opposite field homerun to give Mattern a 1 run advantage. Mattern added to thier lead in the bottom of the 5th when they scored 4 more runs on a single from Zack Plasmier that scored Henry Gise and Scott Davis and then Matt "Hogie" Hogan singled to right to plate 2 more runs. Mascelli scored again the bottom of the 6th when Ryan Driscoll was hit by a pitch and Tim Rickert doubled to the warning track. Mattern's 5th inning insurance runs would hold though as they won the game 6-2 and will now advance to the Majors Championship Series. Matterns offense was led by Richie Windon and Zack Plasmier who each had 2 hits and combined for 4 RBI's. Henry Gise, Ian Lloyd, Matthew Hogan and Sean Green also each picked up a Hit. Zack Plasmier pitched 5 1/3 innings for Mattern and allowed just 1 run on 3 hits and recorded 5 strike outs. Scott Davis hadled the relief duties in the bottom of the 6th and recorded 2 K's. For Mascelli, Jack Hagood pitched a complete game and recorded 6 strike outs. Offensively, Mascelli recived hits from Chris Deely, Jack Hagood, Jimmy Pierce and Tim Rickert. Congrats to both teams for playing hard throughout the exciting 3 game series.

Homecraft 8 Hypoint 3 - Jimmy Connolly and Tommy Larson faced off on the mound in this second game of the playoffs, and both brought their A-game. The score was 0-0 until the 3rd inning when Hypoint began the top of the 3rd with a lead-off double by Thomas Diamanty followed by a 2-run HR blast from Tommy Larson. Homecraft came storming back in the bottom of the inning on a lead-off single from Davis Jones followed by a double from Brannon McHugh knocking in Jones. Austin Coughenour then doubled down the left field line to knock in McHugh for the second run of the inning, and then Will Connolly stroked a double of his own to plate Austin Coughenour and give Homecraft a 3-2 lead after 3 innings. Hypoint came back to tie the game in the fourth on an RBI single from JP Sawyer scoring Kyle Isakoff who had drawn a walk to start the inning. Homecraft then turned up the offense in the bottom of the 5th pounding out 6 hits and plating 5 runs to take the lead for good. DJ Thommes started the inning with a single and then scored on a double by Brannon McHugh. Jimmy Connolly followed up with a single and then Austin Coughenour doubled to knock in McHugh and Connolly. Will Connolly joined the hit parade with a solid single to knock in Coughenour, and then Will was driven home on an RBI singled by Quinn Cassidy to complete the scoring for Homecraft. At the end of the 5th, Homecraft had taken an 8-3 lead which held up, but again not without a fight from Hypoint who got 2 men on base in the top of the 6th on consecutive singles from Kevin LaPlante and JP Sawyer, but Davis Jones was able to retire the side to complete the victory for Homecraft. Homecraft congratulates Hypoint on a well deserved first place regular season finish and their competitiveness to the end in both games of the playoffs. Homecraft also thanks Pat Walling, Andy Sopirak and Adam Mills for their fine umpiring service.

Mattern 4 Mascelli 0 - After suffering a tough loss in game 1 of the 3 game series, Mattern and Associates bounced back to win game 2 behind the arm of pitcher Henry Gise. Gise hurled a 2 hit shut-out, recorded 5 K’s and surrendered just 2 walks in his 5 2/3 innings of work. Scott Davis preserved the win by striking out the final batter in the bottom of the 6th. Offensively, Mattern came out of the gate hot as Richie Windon hit a “no doubt” lead-off homerun in the top of the 1st inning to give Mattern a 1-0 lead. Henry Gise helped his cause by going 3 for 4 at the plate, followed by Scott Davis ,Ian Lloyd, Matthew Hogan and Matthew Schell who also had hits on the night. For Mascelli, Jack Hagood led the team with 2 hits. Jimmy Pierce, Thomas Connelly, Chris Deely and Jack Hagood all pitched well for Mascelli. With this win, Mattern ties the series at 1-1 to force a game 3 Friday night at 6:30PM at Heeney Field.

Kevin LaPlante started the game brilliantly for Hypoint by striking out the side in the 1st inning, but Homecraft got on the board quickly after that with 2 runs in the 2nd on back to back singles from Jimmy Connolly and Austin Coughenour. Homecraft added another run in the 3rd on back to back doubles from Brannon McHugh and Jimmy Connolly to take a 3-0 lead. AAA PLAYOFFS
* Saturday, June 13, 2009 (Championship)
Tiki Angels 6 Friendly Cubs 5 - The Tiki Angels captured the AAA crown by defeating the Friendly Gift Shop Cubs, 6-5 in a well- played, back-and-forth pitcher's duel. For the sixth straight game, Sam Barrett was the Angel starting pitcher, and for the sixth straight game he held the opposition in check - limiting the Cubs to 3 runs before passing the baton to Adam Reynolds with a no outs in the top of the third, and the Cubs' Peter Durgin on first. Reynolds threw bb's the rest of the way, hurling a spectacular 4 innings on a scant 58 pitches- giving up just one hit, striking out six, walking two, and with 38 of the 58 pitches going for strikes. Adam was supported by a strong Angel defense, led by the keystone combo of Caroline Silverman and Daniel Smith, who combined on a nifty 4-6 putout to erase Will Steenkamer at second with one out in the 4th, and traded assists in the 5th and 6th. The Angel offense was paced by the scorching Will Lundstrom , who followed up his 3-3 two RBI performance in the semi-finals with an equally perfect 2-2 3 RBI performance in the championship. Will wouldn't have had the RBI opportunities without Matt Rosenthal and Caroline Silverman being on base all six times they appeared at the plate. Each drew 3 walks and scored 2 times. Smith capped an outstanding playoff run of his own with a sharp single to center, after which he scored on a George Steinhoff fielder's choice. The Cubbies put up a fantastic effort in defeat. Starting pitcher Will Steenkamer whiffed 7 Angels and allowed just three hits, and reliever Austin Leshock yielded just one run over the final two frames. Leshcok received a huge assist from CF Will Borda, who turned Daniel Smith's sure double into a harmless out with a spectacular diving catch. The Cub batters were led by Jacob Meisel, whose first inning single to right plated Michael Minnick for the first Cubs run, and Matthew Greenley, who crushed a Reynolds heater to left for a standup double in the fifth. Leshock added an RBI on a fielder's choice. With the Angels clinging to a 6-5 lead in the top of the sixth, Reynolds calmly k'd the leadoff batter with a nasty changeup, and then induced a harmless two hopper back to the mound for out #2. As the Halo faithful started to rise, Adam fired one last fastball to the speedy Rhodunda, who slapped a troublesome-looking grounder up the middle, but SS Daniel Smith snared it off the short hop just shy of second base and flipped to Steinhoff at first before a pile of red jerseys rushed the mound to celebrate. Congratulations to the Cubs and Angels on a great game and a fantastic season.

Tiki 6 YCST 5 - The Tiki Music Angels advanced to the AAA Championship Game with a nail biting 6-5 victory over the gritty YCST Tigers. Will Lundstrom paced Angel attack with three hits and a pair of RBIs, and Aaron Macha, Tommy Donofrio and Daniel Smith notched the other Angel hits. Angel pitchers Lundstrom, Donofrio, Sam Barrett, Adam Reynolds, and George Steinhoff combined to hold the Tigers to 5 runs, in large part due to some fine defensive work behind them. In the fourth, Macha ranged to the deepest corner of Heeney's rightfield to track down Ryan Maffia's towering blast to save runs, and in the sixth Lundstrom preserved a 5-5 tie by expertly blocking the plate on a tagout at home. Tiger pitchers Sam Skammer, Patrick Harkins, Ryan Maffia, Jeffrey Grantham and Noah NieKamp were just as effective as their Angel counterparts, limiting the Halos to a scant 6 hits - with a big assist from centerfielder Pedro de Souza Healy, who converted three Angel shots into harmless outs. The Tiger one-two punch of Jake Mottola and Luke Stirparo combined to reach base 5 of 6 times, and scored 4 of the 5 Tiger runs. Congratulations to both teams on fine seasons and a fantastic game.
