Coaches Clinic on Monday 5/21/12 from 7:30 to 9:30 at DBI-Pro Advantage Baseball

There will be a Coaches Clinic on Monday 5/21/12 from 7:30 to 9:30 at DBI-Pro Advantage Baseball Center which is located at Building #8, 800 Flanders Rd. Mystic. The clinic will cover the fundamentals of hitting, throwing/pitching and fielding and is applicable to coaches in all levels of MLL. MLL strongly encourages you to attend. Our goal is to introduce a common coaching methodology and terminology that can be consistently used by coaches throughout our league.

DBI-Pro Advantage Baseball Center is a newly formed organization run by Dennis Long, Matt Merullo, and Pete Kiefer. Some of you may know of Dennis, his expertise i
s in pitching and he has run clinics for us in the past. Matt is a retired professional with 6 years in MLB as a catcher and Pete is an experienced trainer and baseball player agent.

This is the second clinic of the season with DBI. Feedback from participants at the first clinic has been provided to DBI and we hope that this clinic will be even better than the last with more focused instruction and guidance. Even if you attended the first clinic it is recommended that you attend this one as well.

Please direct question and feedback to Mike Kerst at mkerst@zhi.com.  Again, very important, please provide Mike with feedback after the clinic. Your input will help DBI to continue to refine their program to meet our needs.

Update Composite Bat Moratorium

MLL Parents and Players,

As previously mentioned, Little League International has issued a moratorium disallowing the use of composite barreled bats in all Baseball Divisions.

  • Wooden and aluminum metal/alloy bats are not subject to the moratorium. Bats that have only a metal or alloy barrel (and no other material, unless it is in the end cap of the bat), and if it meets the other standards (length, diameter, etc. for the respective division in which it is used) are not subject to the moratorium, regardless of the composition of the handle or the transition to the barrel.
  • A waiver process is in place to allow manufactures to submit individual bat models for possible waivers allowing for use in Major’s Division and above.  Information on the composite baseball bats that have received waivers for the Little League (Majors) Baseball Division can be found here: http://www.littleleague.org/learn/equipment/approvedcompbatssmall.htm
  • More information on the moratorium can be found at the Little League International Website
  • The moratorium does not apply to the Softball Divisions.

Composite Bat Moratorium

MLL Parents and Players,
As mentioned at the Monthly MLL Meeting on Jan 6th, 2011, effective immediately Little League International has placed a moratorium on all baseball bats constructed with composite material in its barrel.  Wooden and aluminum metal/alloy bats are NOT subject to the moratorium. Bats that have only a metal or alloy barrel (and no other material, unless it is in the end cap of the bat), and if it meets the other standards (length, diameter, etc. for the respective division in which it is used) are not subject to the moratorium, regardless of the composition of the handle or the transition to the barrel.  In other words, composite-handled/alloy-barreled bats are NOT subject to the moratorium.  Although manufacturer's will be offered the opportunity to apply for waiver's, currently NO waivers have been granted for Majors Baseball Division and below.

More information can be found on the LLI Website:
http://www.littleleague.org/media/newsarchive/2010/Sep-Dec/LLBBCompositeBatMoratoriumFAQ.htm

LLI has recently posted a "2011 Approved Non-Wood Bat List", however, please be aware that this list is generating considerable confusion and is subject to change.  This list does not appear to be comprehensive.  Additionally some of the Model Numbers do not appear to accurately match the Model Names.   In fact, LLI  have recently acknowledged on their Facebook page that this list may not be accurate and is subject to change.   This is an evolving situation and more information will be forwarded as necessary.

As previously mentioned, this moratorium does NOT apply to composite softball bats.  It should be noted, however, that when asked why this moratroium doesn't apply to softball  LLI states, "To date, there is currently no similar scientific research available on the performance of bats used in Little League’s softball program."  It is unclear if LLI will be conducting a similar investigation for softball.

If you have any question please feel free to contact me,

Lightning Safety for Mystic Little League

Mystic Little League takes the treat of Lightning very seriously. When thunderstorms threaten, coaches and officials must not let the desire to start or complete a game hinder their judgment when the safety of participants and spectators is in jeopardy.

It is important for coaches and officials to know some basic facts about lightning and its dangers

  •  All thunderstorms produce lightning and are dangerous.

  • Lightning often strikes outside the area of heavy rain and may strike as far as 10 miles from any rainfall.

  • If you hear thunder, you are in danger. Lightning leaves many victims with permanent disabilities. Postpone activities if thunderstorms are imminent.

  • Plan ahead. Have a lightning safety plan. Know where people will go for safety, and know how much time it will take for them to get there. The dugout is NOT a safe place during a thunderstorm.

  • Keep an eye on the sky. Pay attention to weather clues that may warn of imminent danger. Look for darkening skies, flashes of lightning, or increasing wind, which may be signs of an approaching thunderstorm.

  • Listen for thunder. If you hear thunder, immediately suspend your event and instruct everyone to get to a safe place.

  • Avoid open areas. Stay away from trees, towers, and utility poles. Lightning tends to strike the taller objects.

  • Stay away from metal bleachers, backstops and fences. Lightning can travel long distances through metal.

  • Do not resume activities until 30 minutes after the last thunder was heard.

When weather is threatening, track approaching storms as best you can- via the use of smartphones with internet access. As a manager, coach, or other league official, don't assume anything: be prepared to take action proactively. Evacuate fields when you can hear thunder, see lightning, or storms are within 10 miles as indicated by weather radar.

Go to your cars, and roll up the windows. Fields and common areas are safe again 30 minutes after the last evidence of lightning or thunder. If a game in progress is interrupted, do not leave the complex until you have been informed officially by a manager or coach that the game has been called, so that all players can be accounted for. The responsibility of following these rules rests with the managers of each team.
