Section 9 Division I capsules
Times Herald-Record reporter Sal Interdonato breaks down the results from yesterday's Section 9 Division I wrestling championships.
96 pounds
Winner: Shane Connolly (Warwick) won by overtime criteria over Gary Wolff (Monroe-Woodbury).
How he did it: The finals started off with a bang. Connolly, an eighth-grader, held Wolff down for 30 seconds in overtime criteria (fourth overtime period) to win. It was 1-0 Connolly until Wolff reversed him 22 seconds in the third period. Connolly received a stall point with 35 seconds left to tie the match at 2-2 and send it into overtime.
Give us a quote, champ: "I've never wrestled before a crowd like this and I knew I needed to perform," Connolly said.
Consolation final (for third place): Tom Quinn (Newburgh Free Academy) d. Luke Roth (Cornwall) 5-2.
Semifinals: Shane Connolly (Warwick) d. Luke Roth (Cornwall) 5-0; Gary Wolff (Monroe-Woodbury) pin Tom Quinn (Newburgh Free Academy) 2:19
103 pounds
Winner: Mike Vespa (Monroe-Woodbury) pinned Ryan Black (Washingtonville) 1:28.
How he did it: Vespa, a sophomore, won his second straight section title. He took it right to Black from the start, getting a takedown and three back points with a split scissor. Vespa ended it by catching Black's head and hipping him over.
Give us a quote, champ: "It feels amazing," Vespa said. "From the first whistle to the last whistle, I kept coming at him."
Consolation final (for third place): Richie Mann (Cornwall) d. Garrett Flanagan (Warwick) 6-1.
Semifinals: Mike Vespa (Monroe-Woodbury) d. Rich Mann (Cornwall) 14-6; Ryan Black (Washingtonville) d. Garrett Flanagan (Warwick) 6-4.
112 pounds
Winner: Taylor Laraia (Newburgh Free Academy) d. Nic Smith (Valley Central) 7-3.
How he did it: Laraia, a two-time section runnerup, captured his first title. Laraia was patient and wrestled like a finals veteran, scoring seven of the match's last eight points. Smith, a first-year varsity wrestler, took a 2-0 lead on a takedown 33 seconds in.
Give us a quote, champ: "I was out of luck for two years," Laraia said. "The third year, I pulled through."
Consolation final (for third place): Nick Wolff (Monroe-Woodbury) pin Chris Sweeney (Cornwall) 3:51.
Semifinals: Taylor Laraia (Newburgh Free Academy) d. Nick Wolff (Monroe-Woodbury) 10-0; Nic Smith (Valley Central) d. Chris Sweeney (Cornwall) 6-0.
119 pounds
Winner: Cody Ruggirello (Valley Central) d. Kaare Stockdal (Kingston) 1-0.
How he did it: Ruggirello, a state champ at 103 pounds last season who pinned his way to the finals, survived and won his third section title. The sophomore's early, third-period escape was the match's only scoring. Stockdal almost shocked the Section 9 wrestling world by nearly scooting around Ruggirello for a takedown with one minute left.
Give us a quote, champ: "I didn't go out like I normally do," Ruggirello said. "He was wrestling defensively and I wasn't working my offense like I normally do. I was confident I would be able to get up from the bottom."
Consolation final (for third place): Kyle Diesel (Minisink Valley) d. Dom Maietta (Monroe-Woodbury) 3-2.
Semifinals: Cody Ruggirello (Valley Central) pin Tyler Lawlor (Cornwall) 3:38; Kaare Stockdal (Kingston) pin Evan Search (Goshen) 2:42.
125 pounds
Winner: Jamie Franco (Monroe-Woodbury) d. Drew Bloss (Cornwall) 3-1.
How he did it: Section 9's best big-match wrestler did it again in a battle of returning section champs. Franco scored the match's first takedown 1:35 in and dictated the pace from there to win his fourth section title. He tied Bloss, a section champ at 112 last season, up a lot, taking him off his offensive game.
Give us a quote, champ: "Once I got up 3-0, I was pretty confident," said Franco, who has three wins over Bloss by a total of eight points. "I didn't think I would give up two takedowns. It doesn't get old. "
Consolation final (for third place): Robert Bailey (Valley Central) d. Eliezer Riquelme (Newburgh Free Academy) 3-0.
Semifinals: Jamie Franco (Monroe-Woodbury) d. Eliezer Riquelme (Newburgh Free Academy) 10-2; Drew Bloss (Cornwall) d. Robert Bailey (Valley Central) 7-3.
130 pounds
Winner: Kyle Piaquadio (Newburgh Free Academy) d. Ali Hasan (Valley Central) 7-1.
How he did it: Piaquadio was just too strong for Hasan, taking him down three times to win his second section title. The senior wrestled a mistake-free match and didn't give Hasan any offensive openings.
Give us a quote, champ: "My experience won me the match," Piaquadio said.
Consolation final (for third place): Mike Corletta (Minisink Valley) d. Sean Prell (Warwick) 2-1.
Semifinals: Kyle Piaquadio (Newburgh Free Academy) d. Sean Prell (Warwick) 13-3; Ali Hasan (Valley Central) d. Jay Bermudez (Saugerties) 12-1.
135 pounds
Winner: Matt Doolittle (Middletown) d. Steve Burger (Wallkill) 9-8.
How he did it: Doolittle, Middletown's first section champ since 2003 (Pablo Diaz at 189), won a back-and-forth battle. Doolittle took a 9-6 lead on a reversal with 42 seconds left. Burger battled back for his third reversal with 10 seconds left and just ran out of time.
Give us a quote, champ: "I've been thinking about this match ever since we first wrestled on Jan. 31," Doolittle said. "I knew it was going to be tight and I pushed the pace until I knew he was tired. I never doubted myself."
Consolation final (for third place): Vinny DeBenedetto (Washingtonville) pin John Bowens (Monticello) 2:24.
Semifinals: Matt Doolittle (Middletown) pin John Bowens (Monticello) 3:31; Steve Burger (Wallkill) d. Vinny DeBenedetto (Washingtonville) 7-0.
140 pounds
Winner: Sean Floor (Port Jervis) d. Mike D'Amato (Valley Central) 7-5.
How he did it: Floor overcame a 5-2 lead by D'Amato, the Section 9 all-time wins leader (211), in the third period. He received a gift when D'Amato, a three-time section champ, was called for a one-point illegal head-scissor. Then, Floor applied a headlock, scooted around for the takedown and tilted D'Amato to his back with 15 seconds left to clinch his second section title.
Give us a quote, champ: "I said to myself (after trailing 5-2), 'I just got to move and I'm more conditioned than him,'" Floor said.
Consolation final (for third place): Kevin Barry (Cornwall) d. Bryan Frain (Middletown) 4-3.
Semifinals: Sean Floor (Port Jervis) d. Kevin Barry (Cornwall) 6-0; Mike D'Amato (Valley Central) pin Bryan Frain (Middletown) 1:44.
145 pounds
Winner: Joey Gambino (Saugerties) d. Louis Berger (Pine Bush) 4-2.
How he did it: Power against power. Gambino recorded the match's first takedown in the first period. He neutralized Berger's power by holding him down for almost the entire second and third periods. Gambino won Saugerties' first section title since 1986.
Give us a quote, champ: "I knew nothing about him," Gambino said. "We never wrestled before. I asked people about him and they all said he was good on his feet. It (holding him down) was starting to wear on me but as time ticked down I knew it meant a section title. "
Consolation final (for third place): Mitch Wightman (Warwick) d. Rob Preiss (Cornwall) 3-1.
Semifinals: Berger (Pine Bush) d. Mitch Wightman (Warwick) 4-2 OT; Gambino (Saugerties) d. Rob Preiss (Cornwall) 3-2
152 pounds
Winner: Cinque Mandela (Newburgh Free Academy) d. Evan Muller (Port Jervis) 7-3.
How he did it: Mandela, who won his first title, was the aggressor, opening up a 6-2 lead with three takedowns at the midway point. He had that extra energy in the tank. Muller couldn't get anything going offensively.
Give us a quote, champ: "Since November, my coaches gave me a quote, 'To get what we never had, we must do what we never done,'" said Mandela, who won his first title.
Consolation final (for third place): Frank Spano (Washingtonville) d. David Rudebush (Saugerties) 6-2.
Semifinals: Muller (Port Jervis) pin David Rudebush (Saugerties) 3:16; Mandela (Newburgh Free Academy) pin Keith Perry (Wallkill) 3:20.
160 pounds
Winner: Keith Corley (Valley Central) d. Greg Wilson (Pine Bush) 9-0.
How he did it: Wilson pushed the pace at the start, nearly getting two takedowns before out-of-bounds was whistled. Corley, a senior, went to the tilt for two sets of two back points in the second period and controlled the match from there to win his first section title.
Give us a quote, champ: "At the beginning of the match, he came after it," Corley said. Once I slowed down the pace, I got control of the match. My tilt has been the key to victory this season and it helped me. "
Consolation final (for third place): Austin Smith (Port Jervis) d. T.J. Ferraiolo (Cornwall) 2-1.
Semifinals: Corley (Valley Central) d. Dan Kokulak (Warwick) 8-1; Wilson (Pine Bush) pin Dan Bender (Saugerties) 4:35.
171 pounds
Winner: Ross Hansen (Minisink Valley) d. Marcus Spearman (Newburgh Free Academy) 5-1.
How he did it: Experience, experience. Hansen scored the first takedown and never was in danger, winning his second section title.
Give us a quote, champ: "It was important to get the first takedown," Hansen said. "I felt confident most of the match. Not a lot of people can say they have won two section titles."
Consolation final (for third place): Matt Parlier (Port Jervis) d. Kyle Ferraiolo (Cornwall) 7-0.
Semifinals: Hansen (Minisink Valley) d. Kyle Ferraiolo (Monroe-Woodbury) 7-2; Spearman (Newburgh Free Academy) d. Matt Parlier (Port Jervis) 4-2 OT.
189 pounds
Winner: Steven Butler (Port Jervis) d. James Brain (Minisink Valley) 6-4.
How he did it: This match wasn't as close as the score indicated. Butler, who defended his title, took control of the match with two takedowns and a reverse. Brain scored a reversal with eight seconds left but it was not enough.
Give us a quote, champ: "All the hard work paid off and all the weight I cut," Butler said. Consolation final (for third place): Mike McGrath (Kingston) pin Karl Ehlers (Monroe-Woodbury) 2:24.
Semifinals: Butler (Port Jervis) d. Mike McGrath (Kingston) 3-1; Brain (Minisink Valley) d. Karl Ehlers (Monroe-Woodbury) 4-2.
215 pounds
Winner: C.J. Floor (Port Jervis) d. Jared Rosado (Middletown) 8-4.
How he did it: Floor threw in a leg for a takedown and scissored Rosado's body to pick up back points near the final buzzer. He won his first section title.
Give us a quote, champ: "Everyone doubted me," Floor said. "He wrestled one match at 215 and got the No. 1 seed over me. I was so mad because I teched or pinned everyone I wrestled in Section 9."
Consolation final (for third place): Kevin Smith (Newburgh Free Academy) d. Shaun Bacchoicchi (Monroe-Woodbury) 7-4.
Semifinals: Rosado (Middletown) pin Shaun Bacchiocchi (Monroe-Woodbury) 3:39; C.J. Floor (Port Jervis) pin Kevin Smith (Newburgh Free Academy) 5:18.
285 pounds
Winner: Corey James (Kingston) d. J.D. Zitone (Port Jervis) 3-1.
How he did it: James remained undefeated (30-0) and defended his title. He was held scoreless until a late takedown in the second period.
Give us a quote, champ: "I'm just wrestling one match at a time," James said.
Consolation final (for third place): Chris Corkery (Cornwall) pin Brendan Byrne (Minisink Valley) 2:58.
Semifinals: James (Kingston) d. Chris Corkery (Cornwall) 7-0; J.D. Zitone (Port Jervis) d. Brendan Byrne (Minisink Valley) 7-6.

Blank gives his best for Ridgefield

Ridgefield High wrestler Alex Blank, right, tries to get control of Jamie Franco of...
RIDGEFIELD -- Ridgefield High senior Alex Blank put his perfect record on the line at the 8th annual Ridgefield Challenge, and the championship match in the 125-pound class is one he won't soon forget.
While Monroe Woodbury (N.Y.) ran away with the overall title and the Tigers could only take fifth as the host, it was the 125-pound final between Blank and Jamie Franco of Monroe Woodbury that stole the show. Franco won a 3-1 decision in a memorable battle.
"We need more of those matches," said Ridgefield head coach Gary Tiger. "We need to see more New York kids and sectional winners. That is what this tournament is all about, to get the kids ready for states, Opens and New England."
Blank, the defending FCIAC champion and two-time defending Class LL champion worked through his side of the bracket with ease. A 16-0 victory over Carl Maloney (Walkill, N.Y.) brought a familiar foe in Jason Camacho of Stamford. Against his FCIAC rival, Blank scored a 13-2 major decision and took his 27-0 record into the finals against Franco.
Only a junior, Franco also brought an impressive resume as the 2008 Eastern State Champion, a three-time New York section champion, and three-time New York Open finalist. A 2007 All-American as a sophomore, he also had no trouble in his side of the bracket to reach the finals.
"We felt going in that if Alex was to win this match he had to be number one seed in New England," said Tiger. "Even if the match was close he has to be considered one of
the best if not the best. I'm not sure that he will see anyone as good as Franco the rest of the season."
In the first period of the final, Blank had an opportunity in the opening minute to take the lead but could not sweep the leg of the stockier Franco. Instead, Franco caught Blank in the middle of the sweep and landed the Tiger on his back for an important two points. While not usually a big deal, it was evident that the takedown might prove pivotal in a match between two evenly matched wrestlers.
"I knew coming in he was a good wrestler," said Franco. "I had to wrestler my match and got those early points. My style was to try and turn him but he was tough and defended well."
In the second period, Franco escaped a Blank hold to extend the lead to 3-0. However, that was all that Franco had to offer as Blank picked up a one point penalty and closed the gap heading into the final period. In the last two minutes, Blank twice worked himself to the brink of turning Franco. However, in the end the two points remained elusive and Franco was crowned the champion.
Despite his first loss of the season Blank remained positive about the learning experience.
"I felt good and crisp through the bracket and this was the match I wanted all year long to find out where I stood against the best," said Blank.
"If anything I have a world of confidence that I can hang with the best," he added. "With a little more confidence coming into a match like this maybe it is a different result."
In a tournament dominated by visitors, three other locals were able to see the finals. In addition to Blank, Ridgefield scored two second-place finishes with Matt Fallon (130) and Matt Morris (171).
Another bright spot for local wrestling was Bethel sophomore Andrew Ford, who dominated his way through the 152-pound bracket and took home a title with a 12-1 decision over Keith Parry of Walkill. For the Wildcat star, it was an important victory one week after tiring and finishing a disappointing second in the New Milford tournament.

M-W's Vespa tops state runner-up at Eastern States
Teammate Franco also captures title
1/12/08 Mike Vespa from Monroe takes on Luke Popolizio from Shenendehowa during the Eastern States Wrestling Tournament yesterday at Sullivan County Community College. Vespa won the match. For the Times Herald-Record/MIKE RICEFor the Times Herald-Record/MIKE

LOCH SHELDRAKE — Mike Vespa couldn't escape the questions.
They were all focused on Vespa's 103-pound Eastern States Classic title match.
Luke Popolizio of Shenendehowa, his opponent, was a state runner-up last season.
"Are you dying to wrestle?" one wrestler said.
"You must be scared (expletive) to wrestle," another said.
One of Vespa's Monroe-Woodbury teammates jumped in, "You have to win."
This happened more than three hours before the match.
The hype worked. Vespa took it right to Popolizio from the opening whistle and never looked back, beating him 7-2.
It was the second straight weekend Vespa knocked off a state top-ranked wrestler. He pinned Jose Vasquez of Huntington in a Kohl tournament final.
"I went from nothing last year," said Vespa, a Section 9 96-pound champ who didn't place in the state tournament. "This year, I'm mentally driven to place in the states. "¦ I want to have two state champs on one team."
That's where Jamie Franco comes in. There are times when Franco, a three-time section champ, needs to get into Vespa's ear. Times like Vespa's semifinal where he led 9-1 over Cam Sullivan of Timberlane, N.H., and held on for a wild 17-16 win.
"I wrestled like a 6-year old," Vespa said of his semifinal.
Franco reminded him, "You can't hold onto leads, you have to build on leads."
Franco talks from experience. He's a three-time section champ. Franco won his second Eastern States title yesterday. He edged Cornwall's Drew Bloss 3-1 at 125 pounds with a takedown with 37 seconds left in overtime. The win avenged an overtime loss to Bloss last Saturday.
"It's not the big one yet," Franco said. "This is still just a tournament. The one that counts is the section tournament."
Both Vespa (15-1) and Franco (18-2) aren't satisfied with their recent wins.
They are off to their wrestling club in Saddle Brook, N.J., for eight hours of training today. Wrestling is Vespa and Franco's full-time job.
"School starts at 7 a.m. and we get home from wrestling at 11 at night."
They're working together to bring Monroe-Woodbury a state title.

M-W vs. Port Jervis Part II
Monroe-Woodbury-Port Jervis Part II is set for 6 p.m. today in Central Valley.
It's a rematch of the Section 9 Duals final, won by Monroe-Woodbury 41-39 in the final bout on Dec. 5.
Each time likely will be missing some of its top wrestlers.
Port Jervis senior Austin Smith, a section runner-up at 145 pounds last season, is still sidelined with an injury.
"If we had Austin last time, we would have won," said Port Jervis junior 189-pounder Steven Butler.
Monroe-Woodbury's Mike Vespa, a section 103-pound champ last season, and Karl Ehlers, a section runner-up at 171, are hurt.
"We still have guys who are out of the lineup and still banged up and football players who haven't fully recovered from the season," said Monroe-Woodbury coach Steve Fischbein. "I'm expecting a close match."
