Ridgefield Tournament
Blank gives his best for Ridgefield

Ridgefield High wrestler Alex Blank, right, tries to get control of Jamie Franco of...
RIDGEFIELD -- Ridgefield High senior Alex Blank put his perfect record on the line at the 8th annual Ridgefield Challenge, and the championship match in the 125-pound class is one he won't soon forget.
While Monroe Woodbury (N.Y.) ran away with the overall title and the Tigers could only take fifth as the host, it was the 125-pound final between Blank and Jamie Franco of Monroe Woodbury that stole the show. Franco won a 3-1 decision in a memorable battle.
"We need more of those matches," said Ridgefield head coach Gary Tiger. "We need to see more New York kids and sectional winners. That is what this tournament is all about, to get the kids ready for states, Opens and New England."
Blank, the defending FCIAC champion and two-time defending Class LL champion worked through his side of the bracket with ease. A 16-0 victory over Carl Maloney (Walkill, N.Y.) brought a familiar foe in Jason Camacho of Stamford. Against his FCIAC rival, Blank scored a 13-2 major decision and took his 27-0 record into the finals against Franco.
Only a junior, Franco also brought an impressive resume as the 2008 Eastern State Champion, a three-time New York section champion, and three-time New York Open finalist. A 2007 All-American as a sophomore, he also had no trouble in his side of the bracket to reach the finals.
"We felt going in that if Alex was to win this match he had to be number one seed in New England," said Tiger. "Even if the match was close he has to be considered one of
the best if not the best. I'm not sure that he will see anyone as good as Franco the rest of the season."
In the first period of the final, Blank had an opportunity in the opening minute to take the lead but could not sweep the leg of the stockier Franco. Instead, Franco caught Blank in the middle of the sweep and landed the Tiger on his back for an important two points. While not usually a big deal, it was evident that the takedown might prove pivotal in a match between two evenly matched wrestlers.
"I knew coming in he was a good wrestler," said Franco. "I had to wrestler my match and got those early points. My style was to try and turn him but he was tough and defended well."
In the second period, Franco escaped a Blank hold to extend the lead to 3-0. However, that was all that Franco had to offer as Blank picked up a one point penalty and closed the gap heading into the final period. In the last two minutes, Blank twice worked himself to the brink of turning Franco. However, in the end the two points remained elusive and Franco was crowned the champion.
Despite his first loss of the season Blank remained positive about the learning experience.
"I felt good and crisp through the bracket and this was the match I wanted all year long to find out where I stood against the best," said Blank.
"If anything I have a world of confidence that I can hang with the best," he added. "With a little more confidence coming into a match like this maybe it is a different result."
In a tournament dominated by visitors, three other locals were able to see the finals. In addition to Blank, Ridgefield scored two second-place finishes with Matt Fallon (130) and Matt Morris (171).
Another bright spot for local wrestling was Bethel sophomore Andrew Ford, who dominated his way through the 152-pound bracket and took home a title with a 12-1 decision over Keith Parry of Walkill. For the Wildcat star, it was an important victory one week after tiring and finishing a disappointing second in the New Milford tournament.

M-W's Vespa tops state runner-up at Eastern States
Teammate Franco also captures title
1/12/08 Mike Vespa from Monroe takes on Luke Popolizio from Shenendehowa during the Eastern States Wrestling Tournament yesterday at Sullivan County Community College. Vespa won the match. For the Times Herald-Record/MIKE RICEFor the Times Herald-Record/MIKE
Times Herald-Record January 13, 2008
LOCH SHELDRAKE — Mike Vespa couldn't escape the questions.
They were all focused on Vespa's 103-pound Eastern States Classic title match.
Luke Popolizio of Shenendehowa, his opponent, was a state runner-up last season.
"Are you dying to wrestle?" one wrestler said.
"You must be scared (expletive) to wrestle," another said.
One of Vespa's Monroe-Woodbury teammates jumped in, "You have to win."
This happened more than three hours before the match.
The hype worked. Vespa took it right to Popolizio from the opening whistle and never looked back, beating him 7-2.
It was the second straight weekend Vespa knocked off a state top-ranked wrestler. He pinned Jose Vasquez of Huntington in a Kohl tournament final.
"I went from nothing last year," said Vespa, a Section 9 96-pound champ who didn't place in the state tournament. "This year, I'm mentally driven to place in the states. "¦ I want to have two state champs on one team."
That's where Jamie Franco comes in. There are times when Franco, a three-time section champ, needs to get into Vespa's ear. Times like Vespa's semifinal where he led 9-1 over Cam Sullivan of Timberlane, N.H., and held on for a wild 17-16 win.
"I wrestled like a 6-year old," Vespa said of his semifinal.
Franco reminded him, "You can't hold onto leads, you have to build on leads."
Franco talks from experience. He's a three-time section champ. Franco won his second Eastern States title yesterday. He edged Cornwall's Drew Bloss 3-1 at 125 pounds with a takedown with 37 seconds left in overtime. The win avenged an overtime loss to Bloss last Saturday.
"It's not the big one yet," Franco said. "This is still just a tournament. The one that counts is the section tournament."
Both Vespa (15-1) and Franco (18-2) aren't satisfied with their recent wins.
They are off to their wrestling club in Saddle Brook, N.J., for eight hours of training today. Wrestling is Vespa and Franco's full-time job.
"School starts at 7 a.m. and we get home from wrestling at 11 at night."
They're working together to bring Monroe-Woodbury a state title.

2007 -2008 Season Kicks Off - With a BIG WIN
Wolff secures M-W's Sect. 9 Duals title
Wins decisive match at 112 pounds over Port's Gardner

Newburgh — Nick Wolff was just a foot from the scorer's table when Monroe-Woodbury coach Steve Fischbein got his attention.
Fischbein pointed to his head. Wolff didn't need a reminder to wrestle smart. Teammate Jamie Franco had already been in Wolff's ear. Even his dad, Al, chimed in.
A win at 112 pounds last night would give Monroe-Woodbury its first Section 9 Duals title since 2000. And if Wolff needed some extra juice, the entire Monroe-Woodbury team and its fans were chanting, "Let's Go Nicky."
In the end, Wolff's 10-4 win over Ian Gardner wasn't pretty but it was the difference in Monroe-Woodbury edging Port Jervis 41-39.
"I was a little nervous and I just hung in there," said Wolff, a junior. "I was just focusing on not doing anything stupid and looking for the win.
"There's no bragging rights. We have to get it done again. Winning one match is nothing. We have to keep winning matches."
Wolff's heroics were set up by his brother, Gary, a freshman. Gary pinned Isaiah Gilliam in 3:10 at 96 pounds to cut Port Jervis' lead to 39-35. Mike Vespa's 8-4 win over John Moriarty left Monroe-Woodbury down a point (39-38) with one match remaining.
"I've coached in Section 9 for 16 years and I can't remember the section as deep as this," Fischbein said. "There's not much separation from the first team to the sixth team."
If last night's action is any indicator, this is going to be an exciting wrestling season.
Monroe-Woodbury won its last three matches by pin to beat Newburgh Free Academy 43-31 in the semifinals.
And Port Jervis knocked off six-time defending champion Valley Central by the criterion of most individual matches won.
Moriarty beat Valley Central's Matt Beebe 8-2 to force a 36-36 tie. Moriarty's win was Port Jervis' eighth of the match. Valley Central won seven matches.
"Tonight's matches could have gone either way," Port Jervis first-year coach Jared Kahmar said. "Valley Central is Valley Central. Monroe-Woodbury is Monroe-Woodbury. We've always been chasing them. We're almost there."
Port Jervis, which lost one wrestler from last season's team, was a slim Duals favorite. Senior Austin Smith, a Section 9 145-pound runner-up last season, didn't wrestle because on an injury. But Kahmar said Smith should be back in a week.
Some bouts had a postseason atmosphere.
Port Jervis senior Sean Floor cradled Valley Central's Mike D'Amato, a three-time section champ, in 3:18 in a semifinal.
In a rematch of last season's 189-pound section final, Port Jervis junior Steve Butler beat Monroe-Woodbury senior Karl Ehlers by injury default in the second period when Ehlers couldn't continue due to an injured shoulder.
