TRAVEL LEAGUE AND SEACOAST LEAGUE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. What is the travel league?
A. The Travel League is a program that requires players to "try-out", offers a more dedicated training schedule and provides for a higher degree of competition than the Valley League. Participation in the Travel League emphasizes player skill/ability and requires greater commitment than the Valley League. Two tournaments are guaranteed.
Q. What should my child bring to try-outs?
A. SNEAKERS: must be worn for all indoor try-outs. Cleats should be worn outdoors.
SHINGUARDS: these are mandatory and are to be worn beneath the socks.
SOCCER BALL: size # 4 (U-10 & U-12).size #5 ( U-14 and up)
WATER: two water bottles are usually sufficient.
WARM CLOTHES: we suggest that players dress in layers for outdoor tryouts, as it is typically cold and windy on the fields.
Q. Our schedule conflicts with some of the try-out dates. What do we do?
A. Attendance at all tryout sessions is expected. Be aware that try-outs are a period for coaches to assess a player's skill and ability. However, MWVSC recognizes that conflicts may occur. Players should inform the coaching staff of any anticipated absence.
Q. My child is a good soccer player and would like the challenge of competing in an older age bracket. Can he/she do that?
A. A formal MWVSC policy is in place to address parental requests for truly exceptional athletes to play in an age group above what their birth date would indicate. Please submit a request in writing to the board of directors. Such applications are granted infrequently. Input from coaches, the director of coaching, parents and the player (where appropriate) are factors in determining approval of the request.
Q. Is there a no-cut policy?
A. Because the Travel League and the Seacoast League are more competitive program and the rosters are limited, placement is not guaranteed. Travel League participation may not be appropriate for some young players for a variety of reasons unrelated to soccer ability. These might include issues of physical or emotional development.
MWVSC is sensitive to the fact that being cut may be traumatic if not handled appropriately. Therefore, at this level, we strive to apply sound judgment and utilize clear communication when making player assignments.
Q. When will I know what team my child is on?
A. The coaching staff will finalize team rosters in early April. All parents and players will be notified of team placement directly by the coach.
Q. My child plays another sport in the spring. Is that okay?
A. MWVSC acknowledges that athletes participate in a number of activities that traditionally occur in the spring. In general, Travel Team and Seacoast players should be able to attend most practices, commit to participate in all scheduled competitions and give soccer priority over other activities. The key to a successful balance of activities is advance communication with the coach regarding anticipated absences.
Travel League players who will miss one or more of the major competitive events are encouraged to participate in the Valley League instead.
Q. What about issues of sportsmanship?
A. MWVSC athletes, and parents, have an outstanding reputation for positive and appropriate support for the overall development of its participants. However, we recognize that there is always room for improvement. Therefore, we ask you to keep the following in mind:
Issues related directly to a particular game or event should be addressed after a 24-hour "cooling-off" period in order to allow time to reflect on the situation.
Coaching should always be left to the coach. Sideline "coaching" often conflicts with instruction the coach had given, and only serves to distract and confuse the players.
Refereeing should ALWAYS be left to the referees. Unsportsmanlike behavior towards referees will not be tolerated. Please allow the team coach to address matters involving referees.
Positive cheering shows support. Criticism, booing and negative behaviors are never appropriate.
Q. What is the seacoast league?
A. The Seacoast League is a travel program that involves the older MWVSC players with the Seacoast Youth Soccer League in the NH seacoast area. It offers a more demanding training schedule and provides a higher degree of competition than the younger Travel League. It is the best and most viable option to involve our older players in regular competitive play. Each team will participate in a minimum of six League games (3 @ Home & 3 Away). Participation in the Seacoast League emphasizes player skill/ability and requires a stronger commitment. Players are required to "try-out".
