Why is a loyal partisan called a fan?
fan
Fan is short for fanatic, which is derived from the Latin word fanaticus, meaning 'belonging to a temple'. Although the earliest applications of fanaticus must have been religious, the first recorded English use of fanatic referred to a lunatic. Fan first appeared in print in 1896, describing rowdy boxing enthusiasts. By the mid-1920's, fan mail became a symbol of a celebrity's fame and popularity.
