BOYS VARSITY AT STATE MEET 07
BOYS VARSITY CONCLUDE OUTSTANDING SEASON AT STATE MEET!

Not content to just "make it" to the State meet, the Mustang Boys Varsity team headed to Fresno's Woodward Park with a lot of momentum, and set to prove that they were among the top squads in the State.  Ranked #4 in Northern California by Cross Country Express (behind Petaluma HS, Woodcreek HS of Roseville, and Skyline of Oakland), the team still felt that they were overlooked by the press, in favor of some of these historical powerhouse programs.  DyestatCal listed Davis Sr HS as #10 in the state for D1, leaving MV off the Statewide list.  Perhaps this was the extra motivation the team needed to stay focused on running well today!

Many runners new to the State Meet make the mistake of going out too fast, and pay the price at the end.  Non PR performances are common due to this.  However, the Mustangs were not going to let this happen today, and while the first mile was extremely fast (Bhavik was thru in 4:55 despite falling, and the rest of the team passed by the time 5:05 ticked off the clock), it was not too fast to suck the race out of the team.  With squads from the Southern Section setting the pace up front (some of the fastest teams in the country) the Mustangs moved up during the race and set themselves up for a great finish.

Sr Bhavik Kanzaria once again paced the team with a PR 5K time of 16:01 - a 5:10 / mile paced effort.  He was 43rd overall - 26th in the team scoring (subtracting for runners who were not with full teams).  Sr Dustin Harris runs his best race of the year at State, coming in #2 for the team in 16:21 78th (57), just ahead of Jr Mike Roderick at 16:22 (81/60).  Only 9 seconds tick by before Sr Harry Nunns is across the line in 16:31 (99/74), running yet another solid race.  Four year varsity runner and letterman Clinton McAdams, running his 4th race on the famed Woodward Park course (Clovis Invite and now State) is 5th today, just two seconds after Harry in 16:33.  All told, the top 5 run an impressive 16:22 team pace (5:16 per mile pace).

Through 5 runners, the team was in a dead heat tie with Davis HS for the 10th spot, and it came down to the 6th runners for each team to break the tie.  Fortunately for the Stangs, that meant Sr Danny Bartz, who had kicked in hard to hold off the 7th runner Jr Connor Donley.  Danny was 3 seconds faster than the Davis 6th runner, sealing the deal and the 10th place team spot.  In fact, Connor came in two places before the Davis runner!

With the Southern Section placing 7 teams in the top 10, the Mustangs ended up being the top team from Northern California in the Division 1 race, beating out the teams from Davis (11th), Skyline (14th) and Amador (15th).  They finished 10th out of 23 qualifying teams in the D1.  Clearly, the team was one of the hottest squads heading into State, and they did not suffer any let down.  In fact, accounting for the extra ".1" of the 3.1 mile race, the group actually PR'd from their great NCS race.  An amazing ending to a wonderful season!

At 10:30 am on Saturday Nov 17th, the gun went off for the North Coast Section Division 1 Boys Championship race.  For the Mustang varsity boys team, this gun was not the start of the race.  This race started back in June, as they laid the ground work for the season to come by getting together to start building the base.  The gun had gone off in July, with the running camp and the steady diet of miles.  It had sounded in August, with the Mt Diablo run and more intensity to their workouts.  It sounded loud and clear in September and October, and the team trained and raced itself into form.  And it certainly had sounded in November, with the EBAL Championship meet, and the lost opportunity to capture the league title.  So now in mid-November, with a mixed sense of confidence and urgency, the boys came to the line to try to put the exclamation mark in what had been a stellar season - although one that still needed the final lines to be delivered.

Each runner pledged that they individually 'owned' the results.  Each runner pledged that today there would be 'no bad races'.  And each runner knew that there were 6 teammates who had the same clear focus as they did.

So once the gun sounded, the Mustangs completed what they started months ago, and turned in a performance that will rank among the best at the North Coast Section meet.  Pushed by a most worthy rival in Amador Valley, the team took it out hard and did not let up.  While individual tactics varied, the end result was an amazing team effort:

- Five runners in the top 20
- Crazy-fast team average time of 15:47 - all 5 scorers under 16:00
- 35 second #1 - #5 gap.
- Fastest 6th runner in all divisions
- Second fastest 7th runner in all divisions
- Total team time bettered only by #1 Norcal ranked Petaluma - by only 7 seconds.

and most importantly:  First place at NCS and an automatic berth to the State Meet!

The boys finally turned the tables on Amador, beating them 66-91 on the day.  Granada surprised the field and proved how tough the EBAL league is by taking third.  Pre-race talk had centered on Castro Valley and Deer Valley and College Park, yet those teams were well off the pace set by the Stangs today.  Sr. Bhavik Kanzaria once again led the MV pack, running with the lead runners all race  before settling for 4th place overall. Bhavik's time of 15:24 put him the top ten all-time at the Hayward course.  Jr Mike Roderick broke into the top 10 as well, with his 9th place finish and a huge 15:44 effort.  Sr Harry Nunns - who loves this course - was the third MV runner in 14th place, while seniors Dustin Harris (19th) and Danny Bartz (20th) completed the scoring, just beating the 16 minute mark.  Sr Clinton McAdams was 6th in 32nd place while Connor Donley was in by the 46th place - out of 120 runners!

With a large crowd of supporters filling the seats, the team paid proper respect to Granada and Amador before the crowd went wild when the team was presented with the NCS banner and plaque.  This is the first ever NCS title for the Boys Cross Country program, and appears to be the first time in school history that the entire team qualified for State!

With confidence growing each week, the team heads to Fresno to race hard, not content at just getting there.

North Coast Section - 2007 Championship Meet - Div 1 Girls Summary
Nicole Aha at NCS 07
SOPH NICOLE AHA RUNS STRONG AT NCS CHAMPS. NICOLE FINISHES IN THE TOP 20 TODAY!

Putting pressure on the team, Coach Davis arranged for a Black Tie Shuttle to take the Mustangs to the North Coast Section meet this morning.  However, it was soon obvious that the squads deserved the royal treatment, as both the girls and boys teams came ready to race today.  Perfect weather - sunny but cool - greated the 20+ Division 1 teams that came to compete for the two state meet berth.  Also up for grabs were 5 individual state selections.  All told, 10 NCS titles were up for grabs today (boys and girls for 5 divisions).

Up first were the Girls Varsity team, who fielded a slightly different lineup due to injuries, but you could tell that they were focused on erasing the memories of the EBAL meet.  With Sr Captain Renee Lau out with a stress fracture, and Sr Lauren Ho out with a probable one, alternates Sophomore Anna Hoyt and Sr Kim Chin stepped in and were ready to go.  New alternate Kelly Peterson warmed up with the team, but was not needed as the rest of the ladies were more than ready.

From the gun, Sr Chloe Wood jumped out with the leaders, setting her sights on trying to grab a state meet spot.  With many runners ranked ahead of her going into the race, this was not going to be an easy task.  Chloe settled into the top 10 and hung on through a quick first mile, with Sophomore Nicole Aha running just behind in a second group.  Jr Kaitlin Kelly pressed hard early, while Sr Brett Zorich and Soph Kimmy Abood race close behind.  Anna and Kim kept pace, with Anna slowly moving up in the middle parts of the race.

As the race unfolded, the Mustangs moved closer as a pack, with Brett steadily picking off runners to move into the #3 scoring position, and Nicole working into the race's top 20.  Anna Hoyt passed a ton of runners in the last mile - closing to within sight of #4 Kimmy and nailing down the vital 5th spot for the team.  Up front, Chloe battled strong with the top runners from the other D1 teams, hanging on to finish 12th overall in a huge PR time of 19:08 (6:22 pace/mile).   Chloe would end up just one second - two runners - from taking the last state meet spot - a great effort.  Nicole was #2 for MV, showing that her EBAL fall was a long ways behind her.  She ran a great race of 19:31, 19th place, right behind Cal's #2 runner.  Brett also rebounded from her EBAL race, nailing down the 3rd spot in a sub 20 time of 19:57 and taking 26th place.  Kimmy Abood completes her standout season by taking the #4 spot - 35th place - while alternate Anna Hoyt comes up huge by finishing in 47th place - 4 places ahead of Cal's 5th runner.  That proves to be the difference as the Stangs beat Cal HS for the first time all season - by 5 points!  Kaitlin Kelly is #6 today, finishing out the season despite suffering from severe leg pain that has hampered her training and racing.  Her willingness to line up and race was an inspiration to the team  - for sure.  Kim Chin rounds out the squad in 7th in a very respectable 70th place - one of the fastest 7th runners on the day.

When the score was tallied, the girls had grabbed 4th place in the tough field, beating Cal, while getting beat by only Granada (EBAL Champs), defending champs College Park and state ranked Castro Valley.  One spot from the medal stand, only two spots from qualifying for state.  While overshadowed by the succes of this years boys team, the Lady Stangs proved that they are among the very best in the North Coast Section, and put their finest performance of the season together when it matter the most.  They should feel very satisfied with what they accomplished this season!

Mustangs visit the historic Mt SAC Invite!
Mt SAC Stadium sign

Outstanding weekend for the Varisty Mustangs in Southern California, as Monte Vista brought back an old tradition and attended the 60th running of the Mt SAC Invitational.  This press release tells is all:

Celebrating over 60 years, the Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational has become our nation's largest cross country invitational. Last year a record 20,000+ participants competed over ther famed 3 mile cross country course. The names "Valley Loop", "Switchbacks", "Poop Out Hill" and "Reservoir Hill" have become part of cross country legend and lingo. The course has changed little over the last 60 years, making it one of the few courses where different generations can compare times. With races starting every 8 minutes or less (except the Sweepstakes Races) along with the famous Mark Guitierrez designed t-shirts, live webcast/feed and the huge "Big Screen", the event has become the most cherished cross country competition to the hundreds of thousands of runners who have competed in the invitational. The races start on Friday, Oct 19th and ends late Sat on the 20h of Oct. For More info about the meet, visit
Mt SAC XC Invite Website

Highlights:
- Alex Morris earns a medal in the JV D1 race (12th), Jake Erlick close behind in 22nd. They race at 7:14am!
- Kim Chin follows that performance by taking 11th in the JV D1 Girls race, medaling as well.
- Varsity Girls get out fast, and stay packed (1:14 1-5 gap) to earn 8th place out of 30 teams in their D1 Varsity Girls Race.  MV's 7th runner is in before all but one team (Kimmy in 77th place out of 210 runners).  Chloe Wood leads the MV pack in 30th overall, with Nicole Aha once again #2 in 52nd.  Top 6 run under 21 minutes!
- Varsity Boys prove there is another NCS D1 team deserving attention!!  Stangs get out fast, move well in the hills, and finish in an amazing pack.  Earn 2nd in their race (missing 1st by one point).  7th fastest boys team out of 117 in the D1 Varsity Races.  20 second 1-5 gap.  Fastest 7th, 6th and 5th man in the entire race.  Bhavik, Mike and Dustin earn individual medals. Clinton and Harry in at 22 and 23!

Co-Head Coach (for the weekend) Austin Glimme earns coveted "8th man" award for being EVERYWHERE on the course, cheering on the team from seemingly impossible to reach locations!

But the afternoon trip to Newport Beach, with hours in the sand and surf was probably the teams favorite part of the day.  Food was the immediate concern, as the race-hungry harriers attacked the local eateries.  Then it was on to the sand, for football, frisbee, body surfing and of course... hole digging?

The Sunday return trip featured an up-close view of one of the large fires that started that day - nearly closing I-5.

A big thank-you to Mrs Rogan (Nunns)  and Coach Davis' wife Karla for driving down and helping out all weekend.  Great goodie bags!

Who will make the squad for next season?  Start making your plans now!

First Tri Valley Harrier Classic is history!
Jr Sr Girls race at Tri Vly
From right: Taysa Bowers, Kirsten Ratliff and Marisa Moore at Tri Valley Classic

Despite a steady rain the entire day before, the first Tri Valley Harrier Classic - hosted by Amador Valley, Monte Vista and San Ramon Valley - was greeted with sunshine, mild temperatures and great racing action at Shadow Cliffs Park!  Eight teams, one as far away as Fresno, faced off in grade division races over the three mile varsity course.  Yes that's right - ALL participants raced the full three miles - many for the first time.  While some Stangs had a touch of 'nerves' before their races, all toed the line and once the gun went off, handled the three mile course like pros!   That's what happens when you've put in all that hard work.

Senior Chloe Wood ran away with the Girls Jr/Sr race, taking first place with a fantastic 19:43.5 clocking!

No team scores were formally kept, although Mr Huntsman's computer tallied the scores "as if".  And the Mustangs performed very well on the day.  Meet t-shirts were given like medals to the top 20 in each race, and MV grabbed their fair share.  A list of shirt winners:

Girls Frosh/Soph Race: Nicole Aha, Anna Hoyt, Kimmy Abood and Kelly Peterson.
Boys Frosh/Soph Race: Amis Matulionis, Josh Smiley, Jake Erlick, Kevin Ho and Zach Chambers.
Girls Juniors/Seniors Race:  Chloe Wood, Brett Zorich, Kaitlin Kelly, Renee Lau, Lauren Ho, Kim Chin, Alex D'Souza, Kirsten Ratliff and Taysa Bowers (wow - nearly 1/2 of the shirts in this race!)
Boys Jrs and Srs Race:  Bhavik Kanzaria, Dustin Harris, Mike Roderick (3rd, 4th and 5th!), Clinton McAdams, Connor Donley and Alex Morris.

- JV Boys nearly sweep, taking the first four places, and 6 of the top 10!  In a hard fought battle down the stretch, Sr Tyler Breen takes individual honors, followed closely by Frosh Josh Smiley (2nd), Jr Taylor Durand (3rd) and Frosh Kevin Ho (4th).  Sr Cameron Tremblay-Adams grabs 6th overall to complete the scoring.  And as if that wasn't enough, Freshmen Zach Chambers and Derek Giovanetti both finish in the top ten (7th and 9th) to add the finishing touches on a great team performance.

- Varsity Girls end up 3-3 on the day, in the dual meet scoring.  They beat the teams from Livermore, San Ramon Valley and Foothill, while dropping close contests to Cal, Granada and Amadaor (by 1 pt).   Jr Kaitlin Kelly takes 10th overall, just ahead of teammate Chloe Wood in 11th.  Nicole Aha (16th), Renne Lau (19th) and Brett Zorich (21st) account for the rest of the scoring.

Varsity Boys finish at an impressive 5-1 in their EBAL opener.  They bettered all EBAL teams except #1 ranked Amador, who had 5 in by the 13th runner!  Yet the Mustangs had 5 in by the 18th, with their now signature low gap between #1 and #5 (this time only 19 seconds).  Bhavik Kanzaria keeps fighting his way back to the top, taking 8th overall.  Harry Nunns (14th), Mike Roderick (15th), Dustin Harris (17th) and Danny Bartz (18th) complete the score.

Stellar day of cross country running by all four MV squads, capped off with the Varsity Boys taking 5th place in their D1 race.  They put an amazing 6 people in by the 52nd runner, out of a field of over 360.  Only 18 seconds between #1 runner (Sr Bhavik Kanzaria) and #6 (Jr Mike Roderick).  Mike was the fasted #6 runner in the entire race (49 teams).  Close behind Bhavik - and we mean it - was Seniors Harry Nunns, Dustin Harris, Danny Bartz and Clinton McAdams.  Jr Connor Donley was the 7th man in a PR time.  Only Amador Valley (1st place!) was ahead of MV among NCS D1 teams.

The varsity girls turned some heads in the EBAL and NCS by taking 11th in the D1 girls race, with only Granada being ahead of them among EBAL teams and in NCS (Cal HS ran in the Seeded Race later in the day).  Sr Chloe Wood led a balanced squad that only had 1 minute, 10 seconds between #1 and #5.  Soph Nicole Aha turned in her best race of the season to finish 2nd, with Renee Lau, Kaitlin Kelly and Kimmy Abood rounding out the scoring.  Sr's Brett Zorich and Kim Chin rounded out the squad.

Earlier in the day, the JV boys took 13th out of 30 teams, and were the first team from the NCS to finish.  Soph Jake Erlick took the individual honors for the Mustangs in the 3K race, followed closely by Freshman Kevin Ho.  Amis Matuilonis (So), Alex Morris (Jr) and Tyler Breen (Sr) rounded out the scoring.  Jr Chris Hassoon was 6th, and  Jr Colton Anderson, who was not even dressed to race (he came to cheer) jumped in to finish out the team!

The JV girls took 12th out of 36 teams in a race that combined D1 and D2 teams into one race.  As with the boys, no other NCS team finished higher!  Soph Anna Hoyt was the top finisher, leading a close pack consisting of Sr Lauren Ho, and Jr's Alex D'Souza, Julia Mason and Kirstin Ratliff.  Sr Taysa Bowers was the 6th and final runner for the Stangs.

A large group of teammates traveled with the bus to help cheer on the team - which was certainly appreciated by the runners and coaches!

Coach Davis' camera malfunctioned, AFTER Soph Emily Bartz spent the whole day taking great photos.  Darn.  If you want so get a feel for it - look at the Dyestatcal web site for videos of the varsity races.

With a field of 42 teams, an interesting race course featuring one good hill, and a large, loud crowd, the Nike Invite is favorite of runners and spectators alike.  And what a fine performance the Mustangs turned in!  It was obvious that everyone came ready to race... and the results prove it!  Great PR's!  Really strong packing in our limited races, and in the open events as well.

Congrats to our F/S boys limited racers and their 3rd place team medals.  Top team performance of the meet! The varsity boys also earned hardware again, capturing 6th place in the tough field.

Individual medal winners included:  Alex D'Souza in the JV Girls race, Tyler Breen in the JV limited boys race, Cameron Baily in the F/S unlimted race, Bhavik Kanzaria in the Varsity Boys race, and Josh Smiley, Amis Matulionis, Jake Erlick & Kevin Ho - all in the F/S boys limited race!  Well done.

With 4 weeks of training behind you, it was time to show what all the hard work was for, and PR's from the previous weeks proved how hard you've worked!

Next up - The Overnight Relay!!
