Schedule Private Lessons Online: UHS and MVP Student Deana Groves Move on to Regional Finals

UHS and MVP Student Deana Groves Move on to Regional Finals

Give University High's Sherry Finkel a choice between hitting a triple or striking somebody out and right now she'll take the triple.

"I definitely feel more comfortable with my hitting right now," Finkel said. "My pitching has been off. I thought my pitching was awful today."

Still, the sophomore got the best of both worlds, as the Hawks (15-14) defeated Morgantown High, 12-2, Tuesday, to advance to the Region I semifinals.

Finkel went 4-for-4 at the plate with a triple and drove in four runs. She also picked up the victory on the mound, striking out four over five innings.

"Before the game, I was warming up with weighted balls," Finkel said. "One ball had nails driven into it to make it heavier and then we have this other one that looks more like a shot put.

"It does make the regular ball feel lighter, but I just didn't like the feel I had out there today. I think I'm going to stop warming up like that."

Finkel got out of the first inning unharmed when the Hawks pulled off a double play to end the inning. She gave up two hits in the second, but got out of that with two strikeouts and a groundout.

She didn't give up her first run until the fourth inning, but by that time it appeared UHS had all the momentum. Finkel's bat had something to do with it, but she was getting plenty of support from her other teammates.

From the No. 2 spot, Amy Titus also had four hits and she scored four runs, and Deana Groves had two hits, including a triple and four RBIs from the No. 3 spot. Throw in Finkel at the cleanup spot and UHS had a regular Murderers' Row thing going.

"The middle of our order did come up big today," UHS coach Barb Solly said. "There were a lot of big hits there. Sherry really came up big with her bat today.

"Sherry wasn't hitting all that well at the start of the season and you could see that she didn't have a whole lot of confidence at the plate. Lately, though, she's been hitting very well, and everything with her confidence has changed."

In all, UHS racked up 16 hits off MHS (8-16) pitchers Kim Savage and Kaitlyn Buchanan. Stephanie Smith also went 3-for-3 for UHS with three RBIs.

"We got good production pretty much from all over the order," Solly said. "Also, we had a lot of girls do a lot of the little things, like sacrifice bunting and moving people over. Everybody contributed to this victory."

The Hawks have a week off before they play in the Region I semifinals. UHS is waiting for a winner to come out of the northern panhandle.

John Marshall and Brooke will play today in an elimination game and the winner will play Wheeling Park on Thursday for the sectional title.

UHS will face the winner of that sectional, at 5 p.m. May 18, at Anker Fields at Mylan Park.
