Mustangs upset New Trier, Schaumburg, Evanston with Varsity 4x800 Meter Relay Victory
On February 11, 2006, the Northside College Prep Varsity and Sophmore/Freshman Teams made their season debut in one of the most competitive indoor meets in the State. In the very first race of the day, Junior Patrick O'Connor opened up a lead for the Mustangs in the Varsity 4x800 Relay with a 2:14 800m. Senior Daniel Kittaka made a nice exchange, and maintained the lead with a 2:22 800m in the second leg of the 4x800m Relay. Senior Bobby Ziegler ran an outstanding 2:32 800m in the third leg of the 4x800m Relay. 2. Daniel Kittaka       6
3. Bobby Ziegler         4
4. Joseph Terdik         3

The above is the Varsity Season Point leaders through February 11, 2006. In our first meet, there were seven schools, so points were awarded to the top 8 finishers in each event only. Relay points scored were divided equally among all 4 athletes that participaied in the Relay.

If you did not score a point in the first meet, do not worry about it. The most important statistic is the "PR" (Personal Record). If you talk to anyone of the above athletes, they will tell you that if you focus on running, jumping, or throwing your personal best every meet, and making it to every practice, you will see dramatic improvment, and points will take care of themself. All athletes that "PR" in any event in any meet will be awarded a starburst at the next practice.

Our next meet is February 25, 2006 at Niles West High School.

In the sport of Track and Field, whether you have scored 37 points or .50 a point, every point is vital to the outcome of a meet. In the 2001 Florida High School Regional Track and Field Championships, after an entire day, the difference between the First place Team and Second place Team was only 2/3 of a point. To this day, it is still known as one of the greatest Track and Field Meets in the history of high school Track and Field. Several members of the second place team spent the weekend thinking about what would have happened if they scored 2/3 of a point. In the sport of Track and Field, inches and tenths make a Champion and every athlete is vital to the success of the Team.

If you have not scored a point this season, do not worry about it. The most important statistic is the "PR" (Personal Record). If you talk to anyone of the Varsity athletes, they will tell you that if you focus on running, jumping, or throwing your personal best every meet, and making it to every practice, you will see dramatic improvment, and points will take care of themself. All athletes that "PR" in any event in any meet will be awarded a starburst at the next practice.

If you missed the bus and the meet today, Coach Gordon will provide you with an Alarm Clock at Monday's practice. We need a full TEAM every meet. Inches and tenths make a Champion.

If you did not score a point, do not worry. It is very difficult to score a point in Track and Field, only 6 athletes in each event can score on a given day. Every meet, focus on running, jumping, or throwing your Personal Best, and as you set new "PRs", points will naturely take care of themselves.

The Mustangs took a major step towards bringing Northside College Prep its first Freshman/Sophomore City Track and Field Championship Title today. Keep it up!

Eric Nelson CPS Indoor High Jump Champion!!! Wemi Jemine Third!!! 4x800m Relay drops 45 seconds!!! Kittaka, Buehrer 4th & 5th in Mile!!!
NelsonCityHighJump
On Saturday, March 11, 2006, in front of a packed stadium at Proviso West High School, the top Freshman and Sophomore athletes selected from 75 Chicago Public High Schools competed in the CPS Indoor Freshman-Sophomore Track and Field Championships. One year ago, in the same meet, the only event the Mustangs scored a point in was the Mile. This year the Mustangs scored in 86% of the events, and have officially emerged has one of the top Track and Field Teams in the City of Chicago.

The 4x800m Relay set the tone early for the meet, and created energy throughout the Team. The Mustangs were ranked 7th in Chicago going into the Meet, and with a 10:34.56 4x800m performance at Fenton were not considered contenders. However, prior to the race, every athlete on the 4x800m Relay committed themselves to running within 4 seconds of their 400m PR on the first 400m of the race and it paid off.

Freshman Brandon Cooper dropped 8 seconds off his PR, and ran a personal best time of 2:19 on the first leg of the 4x800m Relay. It was the second fastest time run by a Mustang this season. As Brandon handed off the baton to Sophomore Santino Merino, several opposing coaches jaws dropped as the Mustangs were in the lead.

Santino Merino came to the meet not knowing if he was even going to run in the meet, because he was designated as an alternate when the entries were submitted. Sophomore Erik Flores, a 2:28 800m runner did not make it to the bus, and Merino was told upon arrival at the Meet that he would be running in place of Flores in the 4x800m Relay. At Fenton, Merino, ran a 2:40.61 800m PR, and being asked to subsitute for a 2:28 800m runner was a tall order. Merino came to the meet ready and prepared to race. Merino showed incredible mental toughness and dropped 12 seconds off his personal best time, and ran a 2:28.93 800m PR, and is now a permenant member of the 4x800m Relay Team. Merino handed off the baton to Freshman Simon Vecchioni and it was now clear the Mustangs were about to pull off an upset and finish among the Top 3 in the City of Chicago.

On the third leg, Simon Vecchioni dropped 14 seconds from the Fenton Classic, and ran a personal best time of 2:31.58. Vecchioni handed off the baton to Sophomore Eric Ullrich to anchor the relay.

On the Final leg, Eric Ullrich dropped 11 seconds off his personal best time, and secured Third place in the Chicago for the Mustangs with an outstanding time of 2:28.45!

In less than four days, the same athletes went from a 10:34.56 4x800m Relay time at the Fenton Classic to a 9:49.03 4x800m Relay at the CPS Freshman-Sophomore Indoor Championships, representing a combined 45 second time drop!!! The 9:49.03 4x800m Relay was also faster than the Varsity 4x800m Relay Team at Fenton, and the second fastest 4x800m Relay by the Mustangs on any level this season.

In the Shot Put, Freshman John Ko threw an outstanding 29.5! Sophomore Preston Buehrer threw a personal best 26'8.5. University of Chicago Throwers Coach Lee Slick officiated the Meet and told several great stories about Shot Put Olympic legend Brian Oldfield.

In the High Jump, Freshman Wemi Jemine improved from a personal best 5'2 to 5'6 to place 3rd overall in Chicago! Freshman Eric Nelson jumped a personal best 5'10 to tie for First place and came extremly close to 6'0 in his final attempt. Nelson won the tie breaker by having the least amount of misses in the Competition, and is the 2006 CPS Indoor High Jump Champion!!!

In the Long Jump, Freshman Albert Lin jumped a personal best 16'9 to place 6th overall in Chicago!

In the 4x200m Relay, Eric Nelson ran a personal best 27.11 200m split on the first leg of the Relay. Sophomore Jerry Tran ran a 29.10 split on the second leg of the relay. Sophomore Brian Chhun ran a 30.70 200m split on the third leg of the Relay. Sophomore Jose Choto ran a personal best 25.00 200m split on the final leg of the relay to anchor the relay to an Outstanding 4x200m Relay time of 1:50.91. The Mustangs placed in the top 6 in the 4x200m Relay, but official results will not be released by the CPS until this evening.

In the Mile, the one-two punch of Freshman Jonathan Kittaka, and Sophomore Preston Buehrer placed 1st and 2nd in the second heat of the Mile. Jonathan Kittaka dropped 10 seconds off his personal best time, for a personal record of 5:19. Preston Buehrer dropped 7 seconds, for a personal record of 5:21. Kittaka and Buehrer placed 4th and 5th overall in Chicago!!

Jose Choto 25 second 200m split in the 4x200m Relay represented a 1.70 second drop off his personal best time and is the fastest 200m time by a Mustang this season! However, Choto felt light headed after the race and was unable to compete in the 4x400m Relay. Designated alternate Santino Merino took his place in the 4x400m Relay and once again rose to the occassion.

On the first leg of the 4x400m Relay, Freshman Benjamin Garcia ran a personal best 61.67. Sophomore Santino Merino dropped 3 seconds off his personal best, running a 63 second leg of the 4x400m Relay. Freshman Sam Vergara dropped 2.41 seconds off his personal best running a 64.78 on the Third leg of the 4x400m Relay. Eric Nelson anchored the relay with a personal best 61.55 on the Final leg of the 4x400m relay for an outstanding Team time of 4:11. The Mustangs placed in the top 6 in the 4x400m Relay, but again official results will not be released by the CPS until this evening.

The CPS Freshman-Sophomore Indoor Championships was by far the Mustangs best meet of the season. Freshman-Sophomore CPS All-Star Athletes are restricted to competing in Relays in the Varsity CPS Indoor Championships on Sunday, March 19, 2006. However, several Freshman-Sophomore CPS All-Star Athletes will have a dramatic impact on the Varsity roster in the 4x800m, 4x200m, 4x400m Relays. The Northside Freshman-Sophomore Track and Field Team has one more Indoor Championship meet before they start Outdoor Track and Field Season.

On Tuesday, March 21, 2006, the Northside Freshman-Sophomore Team will take on 7 of the best Freshman-Sophomore squads in the State at the Fenton "Ostberg" Indoor Invitational. The meet will feature the "Jim Nichols 800m run" and the "Emil Ostberg 200m run" in honor of said All-American Athletes. Plaques will be awarded to the first 5 places in individual events and the first 4 places in relays. The Meet will features 16 Events, and Northside will have two entries per individual event, and one Relay in the 4x135 yards Relay, 4x800m Relay, 4x270 yards Relay, and 4x405 yards Relay. Northside is also within striking distance of several Fenton "Ostberg" Indoor Invitational Field House records.

Athletes not selected in either of the remaining Indoor Meets will have a 400m/800m Powerade Time Trial on Friday, March 17, 2006, and the Throwers will also have Shot Put Powerade Trial on Friday, March 17, 2006. Any athlete that runs or throws a "PR" will be awarded a jug of Powerade at the Time Trial.

NEW uniforms ordered for the Track and Field Team
The Athletic Department has ordered NEW uniforms for the Track and Field Team. The 2006 Mustangs will have new Track and Field uniforms that feature a "Winged Track and Field foot" on the jersey, along with the words "Northside Mustangs" in our school color, Maroon.

The uniforms will be made with Cobblestones run-dri technology, which takes moisture out of the equation and allows maximum performance no matter what the environmental conditions (Indoors or Outdoors). This is accomplished by a unique finishing technology combined with the right fiber selection.

Please note, Cross Country athletes who have not turned in their uniform from Cross Country season, will not be issued a new Track and Field uniform until it is turned in.

Mustangs upset St.Joseph and take home 10 Plaques at "Ostberg" Freshman-Sophomore Championships!!
On Tuesday, March 21, 2006, the Freshman-Sophomore Boys Track and Field Team traveled to Fenton High School to compete against 7 of the best Freshman-Sophomore Teams in Illinois. Final entries for the meet were due March 14, 2006, with no substitutions allowed. Fenton Head Coach and Meet Director, John Kurtz, showed great sportsmanship allowing the Mustangs to make substitutions one hour before the Meet for missing athletes. The Mustangs were without, Eric Nelson (sick), Hiro Joho (did not show up to the bus), Daniel Priemer (did not show up to the bus), and Kyle Diep (unavailable).

The Meet was the best organized meet that the Mustangs attended during the 2006 Indoor season. The meet was named after two former Fenton athletes, who earned All-American honors during their collegiate careers. Jim Nichols (All-American in 800m run) and Emil Ostberg (All-American in the 200m Dash). To earn All-American honors, a collegiate athlete has to place in the Top 8 in the Country at the NCAA National Track and Field Championships. Fenton awarded Team Trophys to the Top 3 Teams, and Plaques for the Top 5 finishers in every event.

The Mustangs had a convincing victory over St.Joseph and took home 10 Plaques in 4x800m Relay, 3200m Run, 800m run, 4x405 Yards Relay.

In the Shot Put, Benjamin Garcia became the second athlete on the squad to break 30 feet this season, with a personal best throw of 30'1. Frehsman John Ko also had a personal best throw of 29'9.5

In the Long Jump, after making an adjustment in his take-off approach, Albert Lin jumped a personal best 17'3.5. Lin also jumped a personal best 33'10 in the Triple jump! Wemi Jemine jumped 15'11.25 for the Mustangs. Jemine also tied for 6th place in the High Jump with a jump of 5'2.

In the 50 Yard High Hurdles, Albert Lin ran a personal best 8.93! Lin also ran a personal best 8.90 in the 50 Int. Hurdles. Albert Lin set personal bests in four events on the same day!

Sophomore Jerry Tran injuried his arm after he collided with the second High hurdle, and was unable to complete the race. However, Tran wrapped his arm in ice, in an effort to come back for the 4x135 Yard relay, but was wisely scratched from the race.

In the 3200m run, the race went out at a record setting pace, with both Preston Buehrer and Jonathan Kittaka showing great determination, running a 5:28 for the first Mile. The final 5 laps featured an incredible battle between Mike Siemer (Fenton), Edgar Chaidez (Fenton), Eric Maher (Buffalo Grove), Tim Griffiths (Lake Park), Tim Loftus (West Chicago), Preston Buehrer, and Jonathan Kittaka, as the rest of the field was lapped.

Fenton's Mike Siemer won the race with an outstanding time of 10:49.6. Simer was followed by Chaidez, Mahler, and Griffiths.

During the final mile, West Chicago's Tim Loftus and Northside's Preston Buehrer changed leads back and forth, with 9 different lead changes, fighting for the vital points and a Plaque. With 2 laps to go, Buehrer made his final move and Loftus tried to stay with Buehrer, and Buehrer showed great mental toughness, running an impressive 21 second split in the final 135 yards to break away from Loftus to finish 5th overall with a personal best time of 11:21.7. Loftus finished 6th overall with an outstanding time of 11:24.9. Freshman Jonathan Kittaka dropped 14 seconds off his personal best time with an outstanding time of 11:31 to finish 7th overall.

In the 4x800m Relay (Brandon Cooper (2:27), Santino Merino (2:40), Simon Vecchioni (2:40), Eric Ullrich (2:40)), the Mustangs won their heat by a wide margin, and earned Plaques by placing 5th overall. However, the Mustangs had difficulty racing at their best without being challenged by another team in their heat. As the Mustangs gain more experience they will become more consistent.

In the 800m run, Eric Ullrich ran an impressive 2:28, with a dramatic kick in the finals 2 laps to win the first heat by a wide margin, and came within one second of 6th overall. In the second heat, Brandon Cooper ran a 2:26 to place 5th overall and earn his second plaque of the day.

In the 4x405 Yards Relay (35 yards less than 400 meters), Brandon Cooper opened up a lead over host Fenton, with a 58 second 405 yard split. Wemi Jemine ran an impressive 59.67 405 yard split on the second leg of the relay and made a nice exchange to Sam Vergara. Vergara ran a 61.35 second 405 yard split, and passed the baton to Benjamin Garcia. Garcia anchored the Mustangs to 5th overall, earning the 4x405 Yards Relay, plaques.

We are still waiting on the Womens Track & Field Team final scores, and final meet results. Kenwood Academy was overwhelmed by the amount of Teams competing in the meet. The first Outdoor Meet of the season had many obstacles to overcome. Several events were run out of order or combined without notice, and the 300m hurdles, 200m dash, Weightmen's Relay were not held at all due to the length of the meet. In addition, there were also problems with hurdle carts on the track impeding the runners during the Womens 100m Hurdles, and Officials were standing in the passing lanes during the the Women's 4x800m Relay. The officiating crew also disappeared early, and the Mustangs entire coaching staff was timing in their place at the end of the meet. However, both the Mens and Womens Track and Field Teams overcame all obstacles in their path to place in the Top 5 in the meet.

Patrick O'Connor wins 3200m! David Parks leads Mustangs in open Mile! Albert Lin places in 110m Hurdles!
On Saturday, April 8, 2006, the Mustangs traveled to familiar surroundings, to their home track, located in River Park, for the 6th Annual Mather Invitational. The meet featured 20 schools, including, Evanston, Lincoln Park, St. Patrick, Mather, Foreman, Schurz, South Shore, Seton Academy, Lane Tech, Curie, Chicago Vocational, Prosser, CICS, Chicago Vocational, Calumet, Steinmetz, Dunbar, and Payton, among others. A special thanks to Mather Head Coach Dale Devinney for running an outstanding meet with Hi-tek laser scoring, video cameras for the finish, and providing the athletes with engraved Track and Field Medals.

In the 3200m run, Patrick O'Connor was spiked at the start of the race, and the spike went through his shoe, sock, and skin, causing blood to flow out of his foot with every step during the race. O'Connor showed incredible mental toughness and determination that would rival distance legend Steve Prefontaine. Despite the condition of his foot, Patrick O'Connor not only stayed in the race, but with the lead pack, lap after lap, in a race that included Mather's Carlos Hernandez, Lane Tech's Joel Wojcik, St.Patrick's Joe Lill and St.Patrick's Brian McKenna. With 300m to go, Wojcik and O'Connor broke away from the lead pack, with each athlete matching each others kick to the finish stride for stride. As the athletes crossed the finish line, it appeared both athletes crossed the line at the same time, and the cameras had to be checked for a photo finish. O'Connor was determined to be the winner, with a personal best 3200m time of 10:28. The Mustangs Preston Buehrer also ran an outstanding 3200m race, and was one of the top Sophomores in the meet, and outkicked Payton Senior Nick Chevas to the finish with an outstanding time of 11:23.6.

After the race, O'Connor received immediate Medical attention from Mens Head Coach Jon Gordon with the use of a first aide kit, and a bandage over his wounded foot. As the day progressed it became even more appearent by the condition of his foot, that O'Connor ran the 3200m race on pure "Guts". He was visibly limping, and had to be scratched from the remainder of the Meet. The Mustangs are hopeful the injury will heal over the weekend.

In the Discus, Benjamin Garcia threw a personal best 81'03. John Ko threw an outstaning 67'06.

In the Shot Put, Benjamin Garcia threw a personal best 32'00.50. John Ko also threw a personal best 30'04.75.

In the Triple Jump, Albert Lin jumped an outstanding 33.01.75. In the Long Jump, Lin jumped an outstanding 16'05.50. Freshman Sammy Caronagan jumped a personal best 12'07.

In the High Jump, Freshman Eric Nelson tied for 5th place, earning a Medal, with a jump of 5'06. On Nelson's first jump he injuried his back, but stayed in the competition to secure vital points for the Mustangs. Nelson had an outstanding jump on his final attempt at 5'08, and just barely tapped the bar on the way down.

In the 4x800m Relay, Brandon Cooper (2:18.36), Santino Merino (2:39.16), Bobby Ziegler (2:29.78), and Joey Paquette (2:22.70) placed 7th overall.

In the 4x100m Relay, Simon Vecchioni (12.99), Sammy Caronagan (14.35), Santino Merino (13.90), and Sam Vergara (14.11), placed 10th overall with a total time of 55.35.

In the 800m run, Joey Paquette ran an outstanding time of 2:27.

Chris Zysko throws Discus 122'2 to take second seed and qualify for City Championships! Terdik 2:09.30
On Tuesday, May 2, 2006, the Northside College Prep Varsity Mens Track and Field Team traveled to Hanson Stadium for the qualifying Meet for the City Championships. The Meet features athletes from over 58 Chicago Public High Schools, and the Top 12 Field Event athletes, and Distance Event athletes advanced to the City Championship Meet on Saturday, May 6, 2006.

Chris Zysko was ranked the 7th best Discus thrower in Chicago going into the meet. Outside Hanson Stadium, at the Discus cage, Chris Zysko earned the #2 ranking in Chicago with a throw of 122'2. The distance of the throw will carry over to City Championship Meet on Saturday, and all 12 qualifiers will get 3 additionals throws to determine the 2006 Discus City Champion.

In the Mile, Patrick O'Connor (4:50), and Daniel Kittaka (4:54) both qualified among the Top 5 Milers in Chicago for the City Championships. O'Connor and Kittaka also qualified in the 3200m run for the City Championships based on seed times.

In the 4x800m Relay, Daniel Kittaka ran a personal best time of 2:15 800m split on the first leg of the relay and made a nice exchange to Patrick O'Connor. O'Connor ran a 2:18 800m split on the second leg of the relay, but had no one to exchange the baton too on the third leg of the 4x800m relay.

The Mustangs were ranked among the Top 4x800m Relay Teams in Chicago prior to the meet, but were not able to complete the relay at the Varsity City Championship Qualifying Meet because only 2 of 8 athletes entered in the relay showed up for the race.

On Saturday, April 29, 2006, Coach Gordon designated Joey Paquette, Adam Swiatlowski, James Casper-Shipp, Joseph Terdik, Jordan Stacey, and Bobby Ziegler as 6 of the 8 entries for the 4x800m relay. However, on the same day, Joey Paquette notified Coach Gordon he could not race on Tuesday. Paquette was left on the Relay roster, so he would be eligible to race in the City Championships on Saturday. However, Adam Swiatlwoski and James Casper-Shipp did not show up for the meet. Joseph Terdik, Jordan Stacey, and Bobby Ziegler showed up to the meet right after the race ended, because an "AP" Exam that was given Nationally didn't start on time at Northside, but stated on time at every other CPS School. Therefore, Coach Gordon was left with only 2 of his 8 Relay entries, and the Mustangs were not able to finish the relay.

The 4x100m Relay also had to be scratched because only 3 of the 8 athletes (Jose Choto, Tom Skawski, Manraj Bains) that Northside entered into the Relay showed up to the meet. Melvin Thomas AP Exam did not end in time. James Casper-Shipp and Nathan Michaelson did not show up. Jerry Tran is still recovering from a broken arm, and Christian Okoyoe left a message that he was sick.

Members of the Northside College Prep Track & Field Coaching staff travel as far as 42 miles a day to attend practice, and make numerous sacerfices for the athletes on a daily basis and were deeply disappointed at the lack of dedication of the Varsity athletes to the TEAM for the City Championships Series. However, the Coaching staff was proud of each and every athlete that showed up and competed in the meet to the best of their ability, and the dedication that the Freshman-Sophomore squad displayed last Saturday and throughout the season.

Members of the Northside College Prep Team will be asked to turn in their Uniform on Wednesday, May, 3, 2006, if for ANY reason, they will not be able to attend IHSA Sectionals (May 19) or the IHSA State Championship Meet (May 26-27) for the FULL duration of the Meet.

The athletes who competed on Tuesday night, ran their guts out for the TEAM, and Jumped and Threw with determination, and made the Coaching staff proud.

In the 800m Run, Joseph Terdik ran a personal best time of 2:09.30, and missed qualifying for the City Championships by only ".17" of a second. Terdik dropped 3 seconds of his personal best time and ran an inspiring race. Jordan Stacey also ran an outstanding race in the 800m run, with a personal best time of 2:20. Stacey dropped 3 seconds off his personal best time.

In the Triple Jump, Geoffrey Edwards jumped a personal best 33'0! Bobby Ziegler also jumped a personal best 15'5 in the long jump!

In the 4x200m Relay, Irfan Hussain collapsed right before exchanging the baton on the first leg of the Relay. Jose Choto made a nice recovery, and made an excellent hand-off to Tom Skawski. Geoffrey Edwards anchored the 4x200m Relay with a strong finish.

In the 300m Hurdles, Bobby Ziegler showed great mental toughness fighting every second of the race despite several hard falls on his way to the finish line. Tom Skawski, who just started training for the 300m hurdles a few weeks ago, made it over every hurdle.

In the 4x400m Relay, Joseph Terdik ran a 59.58 400m split on the first leg of the relay. Jordan Stacey ran a personal best 60.28 400m split on the second leg of the relay. Stacey dropped 4 seconds off his personal best time. Geoffrey Edwards ran a personal best 60.56 400m split on the third leg of the relay. Edwards also dropped 4 seconds off his personal best time. Patrick O'Connor, who moments earlier ran a 4:50 Mile, anchored the 4x400m relay with an outstanding 400m split of 59.97, for a total time of 4:00.39.

Eric Nelson CPS Outdoor High Jump Champion! Preston Buehrer 10:57 3200m! Mustangs take Third Place in City Championships!!!
On Friday, May 5, 2006, Northside College Prep Sophomore-Freshman Mens Track & Field Team competed for the Outdoor CPS Track and Field Championship. In 2005, the Mustangs did not score a single point in the City Championships and placed 58th overall. In one year, the Mustangs went from 58th place to 3rd place overall in the Outdoor City Championships!!!

The Meet was won by Lane Tech. There was a tie for second between Morgan Park and Mather, with the Mustangs finishing in Third Place in the City Championships!!

In the High Jump, there was great sportsmanship between Mather and Northside, with jumpers from both Teams encouraging each other on every jump. After two attempts, neither Northside or Mather had cleared 5'6, and both squads had one remaining athlete in the competition. The Mather athlete barely missed it on his Third Attempt. Freshman Eric Nelson then cleared 5'6 on his Third attempt to win the competition. The bar was then raised to 5'8, and Nelson had an incredible jump and was way above the bar on his very first attempt. A crowd gathered to the High Jump pit as the bar was raised to 5'10. On Nelson's first attempt, Nelson had a great take-off, and cleared 5'10. The High Jump Bar was then raised to 6'0. On his first attempt, his spike got caught in the runway before take-off. Nelson was ok, and was ready for his second attempt. On his second attempt, Nelson was up and over 6'0, and just barely tapped the bar on the way down. It appeared briefly that he had cleared 6'0, but the bar rattled and came off. On his third attempt, Nelson came close again to clearing 6'0. Eric Nelson won both the 2006 CPS Indoor and Outdoor High Jump Championships.

In the Shot Put, Benjamin Garcia finished 7th overall with a throw of 32'5.50. John Ko threw a personal best 31'2.75.

In the Triple Jump, Eric Nelson placed 3rd overal with a personal best jump of 36'11. Albert Lin placed 4th overall with a jump of 36'6. Lin also placed 4th in the Long Jump with an outstanding jump of 17'05.

Eric Ullrich anchored the relay with a 2:29 800m split, for a total time of 9:44, and 6th overall in the City.

In the 3200m run, there was an epic battle with several lead changes between the top 5 athletes. Northside Preston Buehrer ran an aggressive race and outkicked runners from Lane Tech and Mather to the finish line to place second overall in the City with a personal best time of 10:57. Buehrer dropped over 20 seconds off his personal best time. Jonathan Kittaka also ran an outstanding race with a time of 11:16 to place 5th overall.

In the 110m Hurdles, Albert Lin (21.03) and Sammy Caronagan (22.37) placed 6th and 7th overall respectively.

Due to missing athletes (Meghan Schmitt, Chynna Moerlien), 3200m runner Julia Shimada was the only available alternate for the anchor leg of the relay. Shimada ran the fourth leg of the relay at her warm-up pace of 3:43 800m split, for a total time of 12:48, to place 8th overall.

After medaling in the 4x800m Relay, Julia Shimada placed 4th overall in the 3200m with an outstanding time of 13:59.

Chris Zysko places 4th in Chicago Championships! O'Connor 10:24 3200m!
On Saturday, May 6, 2006, Northside Mens Track & Field Team sent 3 athletes to the Varsity City Championships, Chris Zysko, Patrick O'Connor, and Daniel Kittaka. The Mustangs had a 4x800m relay seeded to qualify along with Zysko, O'Connor, Kittaka for the City Championships, but were DQ in the qualifying meet because of an AP Exam lasting an hour later than originially scheduled made it impossible to make it to the qualifying the meet in time for the race. The Mustangs were also DQ in the 4x100 and other events at the Qualifying meet due to athletes taking an AP Exam.

However, Zysko, O'Connor, and Kittaka were still determined to improve on last year's 20th place finish in the City Championships despite only having 3 athletes in the meet. The Mustangs shocked everyone but themselves, and finished 12th overall in Chicago out of 58 schools with only 3 athletes.

Chris Zysko placed 4th overall in the Discus with a throw of 122'2.

Patrick O'Connor placed 5th overall in the 3200m run with a personal best time of 10:24. O'Connor was at 5:00 at the Mile mark, and had his strongest start to any race this season. O'Connor's time in the City Championships is also on pace with distance legend and former City Champion John Krumsee performance in the City Championships during his Junior year of high school (10:14).

Daniel Kittaka placed 7th overall in the 3200m run with an outstanding time of 10:44. Although Kittaka has run many races this season at a faster time, he still had his best race of the season through 2400 meters (7:54), which is exactly the pace he needs to run at IHSA Sectionals.

In the Mile, the Mustangs went out slower then planned, but still ran outstanding races. Patrick O'Connor placed 7th overall with a 4:53 Mile. Daniel Kittaka placed 9th overall with a 4:57 Mile.
