WHITNEY YOUNG INVITATIONAL CANCELED; Mustangs will attend GBN 2/13/2007 New Trier Invite 2/20/07
On Thursday, February 1, 2007, Northside Head Coach Jon Gordon received a voice mail upon returning home from practice from Whitney Young Girls Head Coach Bob Geiger. The Whitney Young Invitational has been canceled due to paper work problems and full details would be given by Whitney Young later. The meet will not be re-scheduled.
Northside Head Coach Jon Gordon contacted Evanston High School Friday morning in an effort to find a replacement meet for Saturday. However, with one days notice and a full field, Evanston was unable to accomodate Northside for Saturday, but did offer Northside a spot in the meet for 2008.
At approximately 10 am, the phone started ringing off the hook, once word got out that the Mustangs were looking for a meet to add to their 2007 Schedule. The Mustangs received several invitations from their IHSA Sectional rivals.
A special thanks to Glenbrook North Boys Head Coach Matt Purdy for inviting the Mustangs to the Spartan Classic on Tuesday, February 13, 2007.
A special thanks to New Trier Boys Head Coach Jim Casey for inviting the Mustangs to the Trevians February 20, 2007 Invitational featuring Loyola, Lake View, Northside and host New Trier High School. The Mustangs also accepted an invitation for an April 17, 2007 Outdoor Meet at New Trier High School as well.

Although, the 2007 Northside Womens Track & Field Schedule features almost double the amount of meets compared to 2006, the Team would like the opportunity to participate in an early season meet rather than a Team Inter-squad meet in February 2007.
Any coach who has an available spot for a Womens Team for a February Indoor Track Meet, Please contact Northside Head Coach Jon Gordon at 773-935-1617 or at Jongordon9@aol.com. Coach Gordon is willing to pay any entry fee at his own expense and the Team is willing to travel any distance. Thanks.

On Tuesday, March 6, 2007, the Northside Mens Track & Field traveled to Bensenville, Illinois for the Fenton Indoor Classic. The Mustangs encourted a lot of setbacks prior to the meet, including the bus arriving 30 minutes late, and athletes Wemi Jemi, Shaheed Ghogha, Omer Aba-Omer, Darrel Johnson, Gustavo Hernandez, Max Brown not at the Meet without any notice to the coaching staff. Geoff Edwards and James Rey were also not at the meet due to illness. Jose Choto (ACT preparation), Brad Eben (SAT Preparation), Erik Flores (ACT Preparation), John Holler (Scholarship commitment), and Prasanth Bijjam all properly notified the coaching staff a week in advance that they would be unable to attend the meet. Therefore, due the missing athletes, the Mustangs were forced to call upon Freshman Hunter Speese, Neal Capapas, and Peter Wilk to compete at the Varsity level, and they all came through big for the Mustangs, scoring points in their very first Varsity meet. Also, several Varsity athletes took on additional events to help fill in for the missing Northside athletes.
In the Varsity Long Jump, Sophomore Albert Lin placed third overall with a personal best jump of 17'7.5. Lin lead the Mustangs in scoring by placing in four event with four Personal Records! In the Sophomore/Freshman Long Jump, Freshman Jaisong Yang jumped a personal record 13'6.
Prior to the Fenton Indoor Classic, Sophomore Albert Lin had not jumped in a meet since the 2006 IHSA Sectional Championships because Basketball season just recently ended. Albert Lin was also without track spikes because they are prohibited at Bison Stadium, and was forced to use basketball shoes. Despite the above circumstances, in his first meet of the season, in the Varsity Triple Jump, Albert Lin placed second overall with a personal best jump of 37'2!!!
In the Sophomore/Freshman Triple Jump, Freshman Jaisong Yang improved 1'0 for a personal best jump of 28'11. Yang placed third overall in the Sophomore/Freshman Triple Jump.
In the Varsity High Jump, Freshman Hunter Speese placed third overall with a personal best jump of 5'2. Junior Sean Kung also jumped a personal best 4'8.
In the Varsity 4x800m Relay, Senior Captain Patrick O'Connor appeared in his first meet in 2007. On the first day of practice this season, Patrick O'Connor suffered a stress fracture right below his knee. While recovering, Patrick O'Connor's strong leadership skills and determination have been priceless to the Mustangs. During his re-hab, O'Connor improved his strength dramatically, by becoming a member of 20 Pulls-Club with 21 Pull-ups, and increased his strength in Squats and Bench Press as well. While injuried, Patrick O'Connor primarily trained by running in the deep end (12 feet) of the Northside swimming pool, and even ran intervals in the pool as well. As the Mustangs gradually increase his mileage, he will have a major impact for the Mustangs, and was already the Mustangs top 800m runner and Miler at the Fenton Indoor Classic.
On the first leg of the Varsity 4x800m Relay, Patrick O'Connor ran an 800m time of 2:23 and made a nice exchange to Sophomore Simon Vecchioni. Sophomore Simon Vecchioni ran an 800m time of 2:29. Eric Nelson has shown great dedication in the weight room, and has increased his strength dramatically, and just learned how to throw a Shot Put last Friday in an effort to help his teammates at the Fenton Indoor Classic. Mustangs upset Niles North in 4x800m Relay! Jonathan Kittaka runs 5:04 Mile! Eric Nelson throws Shot Put 36'9!!!
 | | | Simon Vecchioni and Hunter Speese |
On Tuesday, March 20, 2007, the Sophomore-Freshman Boys Track and Field Team traveled to Fenton High School in Bensenville, Illinois to compete against eight of the best Sophomore-Freshman Teams in Illinois. The meet featured Buffalo Grove High School, Niles North, Lake Park, West Chicago, Fenton High School, Northside College Prep, Brooks College Prep, and St.Joseph.
The Meet was one of the best organized meets that the Mustangs attended during the 2007 Indoor season. The meet was named after two former Fenton athletes, who earned All-American honors during their collegiate careers. Jim Nichols (All-American in 800m run) and Emil Ostberg (All-American in the 200m Dash). To earn All-American honors, a collegiate athlete has to place in the Top 8 in the Country at the NCAA National Track and Field Championships. Fenton awarded Team Trophys to the Top 3 Teams, and Plaques for the Top 5 individual finishers and Top 4 Relays in every event.
In the Shot Put, it was the best competition the state has seen this season. All sixteen throwers were outstanding, and it took something special to score and place in the top six in this meet. Freshman Alejandro Valdivieso threw a personal best 25'6. Captain Eric Nelson won his flight, and scored vital points for the Mustangs by placing 6th overall with a Personal Best throw of 36'9!! Nelson is now within 0'3 of the school record!! Lake Park's Dan Block broke the meet record, and stadium record, with an IHSA automatic state qualifying throw of 53'5.5. Block's throw went past the Shot Put area, and into the High Jump take-off area. It was by far the best Shot Put competition the Mustangs have been in this season.
In the High Jump, there were several ties. The ties were broken by awarding the higher place to the athlete with the least number of total misses during the high jump competition. Northside Freshman Hunter Speese placed 7th out of sixteen jumpers, with a jump of 5'0. Sophomore Wemi Jemine earned a plaque by placing 4th overall with a jump of 5'6. Niles North Randell Smith placed second with a jump of 6'0. Buffalo Grove's Matt Newman won it with a jump of 6'0.
In the Pole Vault, after only one day of practice, Northside Sophomore Simon Vecchioni made history by becoming the first Northside Athlete to compete in Pole Vault in a meet. Vecchioni came close to clearing 6'6 on his first attempt, but came down on the cross bar as he was clearing it. It was an outstanding first meet pole vaulting for Simon Vecchioni. Vecchioni learned steps, had solid pole vault plants, and was able to release the bar with ease. Vecchioni will resume pole vault practice on Thursday night, and will set the school record in his next meet.
In the Long Jump, Sophomore Martin Melto scored for the Mustangs by placing 6th overall with a personal best jump of 17'5.75. Melto improved by 0'6.75! Sophomore Wemi Jemine jumped an outanding 14'11.25.
In the Triple Jump, Freshman Jiasong Yang jumped a personal best 34'7.5. Yang's performance is even more impressive considering he raced the two mile prior to jumping, and still improved his PR 5'8.5 after racing the two mile!! Sophomore Albert Lin secured vital points for the Mustangs by placing fourth overall with a personal best jump of 37'3.5! Lin was awarded a plaque for placing fourth in the meet.
In the 4x800m Relay, the Mustangs placed 5th a year ago, with Brandon Cooper (2:27), Santino Merino (2:40), Simon Vecchioni (2:40), and Eric Ullrich (2:40) earning a plaque. In 2007, the Mustangs were seeded fourth. However, Sophomore Brian Chhun, who ran a 2:33 800m split at the UC Lab School Invite was unable to make the meet. Who would be able to replace Chhun's speed in the relay? The Mustangs hopes of a top four finish in the Relay looked bleak. As the bus pulled into Fenton High School, Northside Head Coach Jon Gordon announced Freshman Nickolas Ruff would replace Chhun in the 4x800m Relay. Freshman Nickolas Ruff showed great determination and came through big for the Mustangs. The Mustangs upset Niles North to finish second overall with a total time of 9:42.

In the Discus, Maine East's Kwiazkowski won it with a throw of 119'0. New Trier's Zapt placed second with a throw of 117'0. Maine East's Fernandez placed third with a throw of 96'2. Northside Sophomore Eric Nelson completed the scoring by placing fourth with a personal best throw of 81'5. Senior Robert Garcia threw a personal best 80'7. Senior Darrel Johnson threw a personal best 71'3. Sophomore Gustavo Hernandez threw a personal best throw of 65'8. Junior Vinh Nguyen threw 54'9.
In the High Jump, Captain Eric Nelson won it with a jump of 5'6, which was also the opening height for Pole Vault. Sophomore Wemi Jemine placed second with a jump of 5'2. Sophomore Albet Lin and Freshman Andrew Czyszczon attempted 4'10.
In the Pole Vault, the field consisted of 10 athletes with two from Northside, and the remaining eight were from New Trier and Maine East. This season, Northside College Prep and Whitney Young became the first Chicago Public High Schools to Pole Vault since 1982. The Mustangs don't have any Pole Vault equipment of their own, and after the rest of the Northside Track & Field Team goes home for the day, the Mustangs have been training two nights a week at Whitney Young High School from 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm. The Mustangs have also been training with borrowed Poles on the soccer fields in back of Northside College Prep after practice without a Pole Vault pit. The Mustangs hard work paid off on Tuesday night. Northside Junior Vinh Nguyen had three quality attempts at the opening height of 5'6. Northside Sophomore Simon Vecchioni made history on his first attempt at 5'6, by clearing it, and setting the school record. With Maine East and New Trier's experienced vaulters, including Grant, Myers, Colby, Parks, Christian, Connor, Maximus remaining in the competition there was little chance that Vecchioni would place in the meet. But Simon Vecchioni shocked everyone but himself. The height was moved up to 6'0, and Simon Vecchioni cleared it on his first attempt. New Trier's Connor cleared it on his third attempt. The height was then moved up to 6'6. Colby was eliminated, and Simon Vecchioni cleared it on his second attempt! The height was then moved up to 7'0. Simon Vecchioni cleared it on his first attempt! New Trier's Connor cleared it on his third attempt. The height was then moved up to 7'6. Only Grant, Parks, Christian, Connor, and Vecchioni remained in the competition. On his third attempt, Northside Sophomore Simon Vecchioni BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD for the fifth time in a row with a personal best Vault of 7'6 to put him in Third Place! New Trier's Christian and Connor put themselves in a first place tie by clearing 8'0, and waited nervously for the Northside athlete to attempt 8'0. Between vault attempts, athletes generally put their sweats back on and relax, or double check their steps, or decide to switch to a bigger pole. What did Simon Vecchioni do? He is one of Northside's top middle distance runners, so inbetween vault attempts, he went to the starting line on the Track for the 800m run, and got off to a slow start (69) for the first 400m, but came back strong in the final 300m, to come within one second of his PR with an outstanding time of 2:19. Vecchioni then made three quality attempts at 8'0. New Trier's Christian and Connor made three attempts at 8'6, but failed to clear it. The tie for first place was broken by adding the total misses during the competition, and Christian was awarded first place with a vault of 8'0. Simon Vecchioni set the school record at 7'6 and also became the first Northside athlete to score points in Pole Vault by placing third overall.
In the Varsity 4x800m Relay, Junior Erik Flores ran a 800m split of 2:23 (67/76) on the first leg of the relay. Junior Santino Merino ran a 800m split of 2:27 (73/74) on the second leg of the relay, and made a nice exchange to Jonathan Kittaka. Jonathan Kittaka ran a 65 for the first 400m, and a 2:15 800m split (65/70) to put the Mustangs in second place, and made a nice exchange to Captain Preston Buehrer.
