July 23, 2001 game "poetry in motion"
Many remember the infamous Sox playoff game vs the Melfort Brewers on
July 23, 2001: with 1 out remaining to make the game complete, the contest
was called on account of darkness. To the disbelief of Red Sox players
and fans (and relief to the Brewers) the game was null and void.

In the stands that night was poet Gerry Hill. He later penned a piece
about the drama that unfolded that evening. The poem was included in an
anthology of poetry showcasing work by writers attending workshops
held annually at the Abbey. It is also included in his book Getting to Know You.

The poem features every Red Sox player in the starting line-up that night
stepping forward to give their opinion on why the game should continue.

The title is:
NORTH CENTRAL BASEBALL LEAGUE SEMI-FINAL
Muenster Red Sox vs Melfort Brewers, July 23, 2001

GOING YARD
In Babe Ruth type fashion former Red Sox player Mel Korte once hit 5
consecutive homeruns in 5 consecutive plate appearances. This occured
at Naicam in 1965.

TWICE IN ONE INNING!
Derek Blanch surprised an opposing pitcher when he hit 2 homeruns...in
the same inning!

No hitters
Former Red Sox pitchers Delmer Varga (1973 vs Naicam in the league final)
Eric "Ernie" Marquis (1999 vs Lockwood) and Dennis Korte (late 60's vs
Marysburg at Annahiem Sports day) each had no-hitters.

2 complete game wins...one day
In an afternoon in the mid-nineties, Brent Loehr pitched back to back
complete games while also homering in each of the contests.

2 Senior teams in a village of 400
From 1985-1990 the village of Muenster had two Senior baseball Clubs.
The Muenster White Sox battled in the NCBL finishing as high as 3rd in
the South Division (12 team league)

Yer out!
In a baseball rarity, Red Sox player Des Grace was called out after hitting
a homerun. It turns out the bat had been cracked and was deemed illegal.
This was untimely for the Sox who were playing in the provincial final at
the time.

What a run!
From their inception in 1964 to 1985 the Muenster Red Sox took part in
the League Championship Series an unprecedented 17 of 21 years!

UNDEFEATED
The Red Sox were unfeated during the 1980 season.

Leagues for the Sox
* The Red Sox played in the North Central Baseball League from 1964-2003
before the league buckled under.
* They joined the Saskatoon from 2004-2009 until teams in the league declined to travel for games outside of the city
* In 2009 they joined the Saskatoon AAA Midget League

SOX Uniform History
The Red Sox introduced their latest uniform in 2007. To date it is their 9th set since their official inception in 1964.

In 1997 a sample of some of the uniforms were worn at the all-star hosted by the Red Sox in Muenster.

Why the Red sox?
Apparently the moniker of Red Sox was received in the late 1950's. The
Muenster baseball team had participated in the local Humboldt Sports Day and
a writer from the local newspaper wrote an article referring to the team as the Red Socks. At the time many of the players were wearing socks of that colour on the field.
The name stuck. Too bad though...it would have been nice to have something a bit more unique. They were officially entered as an organized team in 1964 under the name Muenster Red Sox.

Take me out to the ball game
There are two versions of Nick Anderson's "Take Me Out To The Ball Game" on this site.

The first is on the Minor Baseball Contact page of the site...the second is be heard on the Mosquitoe Red Sox section. Nick could sing the song as a two year old. The versions heard on the site were recorded just after his 3rd birthday in 2000.

Hold-outs stand ground
Red Sox owner Ron Frank has failed in his attempts to sign 3 future prospects...however, they have agreed to do the diamond until they learn to throw curveballs in 2015.

...more than just mousing
Tough...how many other teams have a scorekeeper who cuts wood with his bare hands?
