PAST UIFL MVPs
2004 Week 1 MVP
WR Sean Nerdin

Sean Nerdin of the Kamas Valley Muddogs caught 4 TD passes from QB Cale Shepard to finish a comeback from a 14-0 deficit to defeat the Scorpion Fish in the UIFL opener. The Muddogs capped off the 33-26 victory to start the season 1-0. Congratulations to Sean Nerdin!

2004 Week 6 MVP
QB Cale Sheperd

Cale Shepherd, (Former Minor League Baseball allstar)now Quarter Back for the the Kamas Valley Muddogs posted his third three touchdown game of the season tonight to capture week 6 UIFL MVP honors. As Shepard was leading his team tonight to it's third win of the season he also took three huge hits at the hands of the Sharks but he keep on coming. The final score of the game was Kamas Valley Muddogs 27 the Ogden Sharks 0.

2004 Week 8 MVP
LB Will Faleola

Along with the Provo Wolverines' Joey Collins, LB Will Faleola of the Kamas Valley Muddogs also received MVP honors. Will's team the Kamas Valley Muddogs defeated the Utah Vikings 42 to 0. Will grabbed two interceptions, returned one for a touchdown and the other to the Vikings 1 yard line that set up one of six touchdowns for the Muddogs. Will also had a recovered fumble and six tackles for the night. Will was truly the leader of a great defense this night that denied the Vikings of a single point.

2005 Week 2 MVP
QB Kyto Khouang

The" Youth" of the league takes week 2 MVP honors again!

After several QB issues and challenges in the Muddogs camp this pre-season and a so-so QB performance from Cale Shepard last year, one young DB with strong organizational skills stepped up and said how tuff can it be to be a quarterback? Well, maybe about 3 years ago when this young man came out of high school, it would have been impossible for him to step in and be such a success in the last two Muddogs games. However, I have been watching this young man for the past three years grow in physical strength, football skills and leadership ability and I for one am not surprised to see him rise to the top as our UIFL week 2 MVP. Kyto Khouang quarterback for the Muddogs is this young man.

Kyto Khouang lead his team to victory this Saturday over a very physical team the Utah Rams, 53 to 6. Kyto was 5 for 6 in passing for 102 yards with two touchdowns. He also added 4 rushing attempts for 23 yards and ran in for one touchdown himself, so as not to miss all the touchdown fun he was dishing out to 5 other fellow teammates as though it was Christmas day. Kyto also took three bad snaps and turned them into 3 completed passing extra points. If you blinked you would have missed them.

Kyto was fast to deliver his handoffs and even quicker on his feet to stay away from the Rams Defense. When the Rams thought they had him on the run and a sack looked hopeful, Kyto throws on a dead all our run for a 30 yard touchdown, this pass was threaded through the eye of a needle through the Rams defense. All game long Kyto keep reminding me of a young Doug Flutie. Kyto had this defense second guessing where his next strike was going to come from and with which team weapon he was going to use.

Now, add this extremely well orchestrated game by Kyto of 53 points to last weeks 47 point win with two touchdown passes and you make a believer out of me and the rest of the UIFL, that this young man is here to stay in a big way!

Muddogs Garner Season Ending Awards

Offensive Coordinator John Thornton and Defensive Coordinator Jared Emerick received the Coach of the Year Award.

The first ever “Coach of the Year” award for the Rocky Mountain Football League just had to go to a couple of men who epitomize teamwork; John Thornton and Jared Emerick of the Muddogs who helped to turn what could have been a disasterous season into a perfect season… a championship season. By vote of the RMFL Managing Board, Thornton and Emerick just edged out Dave Stireman of the Ogden Rhino Raiders for the title. Also receiving votes were Mike Morgan of the Great Falls Gladiators, Jim Greene of the Bear River Valley Rockets and Rick Hilder of the Madison Lionz.

As immediately as John Thornton knew he was nominated, as he was officially listed as the teams “Head Coach” he came forward and wanted to make sure any award he may receive also included Emerick as a coaching team that shared the responsibilities… and shared in the victories. The Muddogs went from a 3-5 season in 2005 to an undefeated Championship season in 2006 with most of the same players. Thornton and Emerick stepped forward this season and helped not only with the game management, but instilling a strong sense of team unity and pride in the Muddogs who defeated the Vipers for the title a few weeks ago.

The following is how the final voting was tallied:

John Thornton and Jared Emerick, Muddogs – 7

Dave Stireman, Ogden Rhino-Raiders – 5

Mike Morgan, Great Falls Gladiators – 4

Jim Greene, Bear River Valley Rockets – 4

Rick Hilder, Madison Lionz – 1

He also had two picks on the night, one sealing the deal as the clocked ticked to zero. The Muddogs beat the Provo Steelers 38 to 26.

Congrats to Matt and also to QB Jordan Kjar who received Honorable Mention votes by throwing 3 TDs.

The next Muddogs game will be Dec. 9 at 10:30 PM against the West Jordan Panthers.

Kjar-less Muddogs drop 1st UIFL Game of the Season

With starting QB Jordan Kjar out of town, the Muddogs lost their first UIFL game of the season 35 to 19 to the defending champion, Utah Sting. Backup QB Kyto Khouang ran for one TD and threw for another as the Muddogs came up short.

On defense, LB Gary Smith and DE Chris Miles held the Sting on the ground, but the passing game led by QB Jeff Wissler was too much.

The Muddogs now prepare to face off against the South Division leaders, the Crush of Utah County. The Crush are undefeated and seem to control their own destiny for the Southern Conference.

The game will be at 6:30 on January 27th at the Utah Olympic Oval.

Muddogs/RMFL Getting Exposure

By Bryan Hinton
Deseret Morning News
Even without money and fame, semi-pro football players in Utah play their game with a passion not found at any other level of the sport.
"It's for the love of the game," said John Thornton, head coach of the Salt Lake County-based Muddogs. "Our guys have said they haven't been this excited to play since high school. It's just awesome to watch these guys."
The Muddogs play in the Rocky Mountain Football League, which features 22 teams from Utah, Idaho, Montana and Colorado. And although players actually have to pay to play, the league has almost 1,100 players.
"The league has been awesome," Thornton said. "A lot of people don't know about it. When they find out, they pick up that passion, too."
He said there is a real camaraderie among the players.
"I've not coached a team that has a love for each other like this team," Thornton said. "It's like a family. The players call it a brotherhood."
Jared Neumeier, the commissioner of the RMFL, said the skill of the players might surprise people.
"It's one level below arena football," he said. "The play is like the (Canadian Football League). We won't get NFL scouts at the games, but we do get college scouts. A lot of guys jump to the collegiate level."
Neumeier said many former collegiate players will join teams in the league. He said nearly all of the athletes played in high school.
"We get guys from the places like the winter indoor league (in Utah) and the Ricks College intramural program," Neumeier said. "What really feeds semi-pro is high school players."
Since the RMFL was founded in 1997, Neumeier said teams have come and gone, with each year seeing two or three new programs with at least one team moving or folding. Such was the case of the Wasatch Wildcats after last season. Their Web site said the team shut down due to team issues and the health of one of the owners.
Brian Nicholson, Deseret Morning NewsSetema Gali, right, of the South Ogden Rhino Raiders, reaches for the ball after a blocked punt. In 2003, the RMFL merged with the Utah Football league, which introduced a dominating force to the league: The South Ogden Rhino-Raiders.
While the Muddogs are excited about their 8-0 finish to the regular season, the Rhino-Raiders are currently on a 78-game conference winning streak stretching back to the start of the 2000 season.
Head coach Dave Stireman said maintaining a winning streak that long gets tougher and tougher with each game.
"We're everybody's big game," Stireman said. "Each year, there's some new team trying to put something together to beat us. This year it was the Cache Valley Bears."
Stireman said the Bears had many former Utah State players in their lineup, but the Rhino-Raiders still won the showdown with their new rivals, 31-14, on May 6.
Neumeier said the dominance of South Ogden was bad for the league for many years, but it is now becoming a positive.
"They stocked up and whipped up on everybody," he said. "The UFL had dwindled to four or five teams. It was discouraging, but now it's coming to an end. Since they moved to the RMFL, they've had better competition. They're not dominating anymore. They haven't lost, but only by their chinny-chin-chin."
By winning so many RMFL championships, South Ogden has had the opportunity to play in the North American Football League.
Neumeier said the NAFL's name is deceiving because it is more of an association.
"It contracts with leagues and has a national tournament," he said. "It has no league games, though."
Neumeier said the Rhino-Raiders have won a couple of Western area tournaments, but no team from the RMFL has ever won a national tournament.
There are two divisions in the RMFL — AAA and AA. The Rhino-Raiders play in AAA, which is the higher of the two levels. The Muddogs play in AA.
Neumeier said the difference in the two divisions is primarily the number of players on the teams.
"In AA, there are about 30 to 40 players on the teams," he said. "In AAA, there are 50-60. You'll also see linemen in the 300-pound range. There are also A-level teams across the country that will have about 15 players."
Stireman said unlike most levels of football, there is a huge discrepancy in the age of the players.
"Our team has by far the oldest average age," he said. "There's a guy for the Utah Wolverines that's about 50 years old. He's a teacher and a coach on the side. There's a wide range. A lot of players are right out of high school."
Most of the fans that watch RMFL games are family members and friends of the players, but Stireman said his team has a bit of a following.
"Against the Bears, there were 800-1,000 people," he said. "A lot of them are fans of Weber State. There are 15 or so ex-Weber players on the team. A lot of the fans want to see players that they watched in college."
There are more than 600 semi-pro teams across the country, but Neumeier said there is still room for more.
"There are still untapped markets," he said. "The league will continue to grow. There's a small conference of seven or eight teams in Colorado that could join. Idaho is fairly full, but Montana could grow. We've had teams in Elko (Nevada) before."

The Muddogs Coaching Staff was also selected to coach the Special Teams for the South squad!

If you check out the RMFL website, the alternates are listed in order of how they'll be called if the 1st teamers don't make it.

The game will be held July 15, 2006 at Bear River High School in Tremonton. Come support your teammates, and come join the league in the 'Strongest Man', 'Fastest Man', and 'Strongest Arm' competition. MVPs will also be announced at halftime of this game.

Congrats to all the all stars and the alternates! 10 players on the list is an INCREDIBLE thing! We're headed in the right direction fellas! Good job!
