MCLL 11/12 All Stars Team vs Farfield Pacific on 7/4/09
Howdy all!!  Wanted to give you the update on our 11/12 All-Stars!  It was a beautiful day and we had a ton of fans in attendance (including lots of board members!)Unfortunately, we did not win, but it was a great game against Fairfield Pacific!  Tied 1-1, then 3-3 and finally lost 4-3. Jon Seda started on the mound and pitched an amazing game!!  Did a great job, but filled several counts and maxed out in the 5th striking out several!  Jon's speed and occasional sidearm kept Fairfield hits to a minimum.  What they did hit, our defense did very well with the plays.  Tyler Holt followed and also did a great job on the mound--pitched one inning and had one strikeout.  Steven Nielsen finished up strong for us in the 6th-also with one strikeout! Defensively we did well....had a couple errors that cost us all 4 runs.  Started well....nice play in the field and then Cody Chorjel fired to second getting the baserunner at second!!  It was nice, especially to start with that, as they did not attempt stolen bases the rest of the game (except on a couple pass balls and he almost got them on those)!  Offensively, we definitely did not hit as well as our hitters are able, but had a couple GREAT 2-out rallies!  One of these included Anthonie Guzman's first 2-run homer---out of the park in right-center!!!!  YEAH ANTHONIE!! All in all, the boys look great!  I know several of you have talked about and I have heard from other people about the talent on this team---they look great and they look great together!!  I have to say, I don't even think that they looked nervous....they just went out and played ball!  They even looked like they were having fun doing it--another true all-star team!! Hopefully next game, we can get everybody hitting and keep the errors to a minimum.  For anyone able to make it, we take on the other Fairfield team tomorrow in Fairfield at 4:00pm at Laurel Park on the corner of Gulf Dr and Peppertree Dr.  Hope to see ya at the ballpark!!

MCLL Needs Volunteer Umpires

For a baseball game to commence there needs to be four things, a field, players, coaches, and umpires.  Each of these items is as important as the next.  The first three are easy to fill, the fields are provided, children are eager to play and there are usually too many coaches applications for the positions available; it is the forth that is difficult – the umpire.

Little League’s official position is, “There is no sound reason for paying umpires, or any other person whose services should be provided on a volunteer basis.”  Last season all the adult umpires you saw, as well as many of the youth, were volunteers.  This season we would like to increase that number.  The rule is that there needs to be an adult umpire at every game, we do the best we can to follow this but if every umpire does just one game a week that means we need at least eight just to meat the minimum, we currently only have three.

Common fallacies of being an umpire:

“Umpiring takes a lot of time.” – False; umpiring takes as little as three hours per week, many people watch more TV than that in a day.

“Umpires are not appreciated.” – False; coaches and players recognize the need for umpires and are very thankful for them. Players will be happy to see you doing their game.

“Umpires need a deep knowledge of the game.” – False; ninety-five percent of umpiring is judgment, not rules.  Middletown–Cobb Little League provides training before the season as well as during.  For the five percent of the time a rule is involved rule books are provided.

“Umpiring is a guy thing.” – False; Major League Baseball has female umpires all the way up to Triple-A.

“Umpires have the best seat in the house.” – True; on the field umpires see more that is going on in a game than anyone else; if you enjoy baseball even a little bit this is the position for you.

So What Are The Perks of Being an Umpire?

All-Star and TOC tournament games: Only volunteer umpires are able to do these very prestigious games.

Free Food: Volunteer umpires receive a meal and a drink after from the Snack Shack after every game they do.

Admiration and Appreciation: Your choice to become an umpire is greatly appreciated by Middletown-Cobb Little League as well as all the youth who play.

To become an umpire please contact the Umpire Coordinator, Chris Kinney at mcllumpire@att.net or 707.987.9936
