I imagine we'll see a lot of fluctuation early on in The Seattle Times' baseball rankings, if only because baseball can be the most unpredictable sport of them all. It's the one sport where you see losing teams beat division leaders regularly, and where having two great pitchers can make an average hitting team a state contender (and not having that second great pitcher can cost a great team at any point in the postseason).
At this early point in the season, the No. 1s stood out. Richland has four Division I players on a team that won the 4A title in 2007 and took fourth in 2008. The Bombers' top hitter, Brett Jacobs, hit .508 last season with 10 home runs. In 3A, Eastside Catholic has an elite pitcher in Matt Boyd and one of the area's best players in Michael Englund.
But there are plenty of challengers, especially in 4A, where it seems any of about 20 teams could win state. Puyallup, Kentlake and Tahoma have beaten each other up in the SPSL already, and we're only a week or so into the season. The schedules in the KingCo 4A -- which welcomed former 3A juggernauts Newport, Issaquah and Skyline -- and the Big Nine both look like absolute gauntlets this season, and each league could have four or five teams in the rankings at some point.
With the amount of rainouts you see in the baseball season, the most up-to-date records can be difficult to attain. If a team's record is wrong, please e-mail me with the correct record, and make sure you send some kind of documentation, preferably a link where I can find the most accurate and updated record for that team.
Class 4A
1. Richland 6-0
2. Snohomish 5-0
3. Puyallup 5-1
4. Tahoma (Maple Valley) 4-1
5. Kentlake (Kent) 1-1
6. Woodinville 3-0
7. Kennewick 5-1
8. Jackson (Mill Creek) 2-0
9. Redmond 5-1
10. Kelso 1-0
On the radar: Bellarmine Prep, Bothell, Central Kitsap, Central Valley, Edmonds-Woodway, Issaquah, Lake Washington, Mountlake Terrace, Newport, Olympia, Skyline, Southridge, University.

All Players must be enrolled in 5 fulltime classes!
All athletes must be enrolled in at least 5 fulltime classes to compete. Anyone not enrolled in 5 fulltime classes cannot play in any contests. TA's are not fulltime classes and taking two of them does not make one fulltime class.
If someone plays in a contest with only 4 fulltime classes and we win we would need to forfeit. With the change in semester it is important that we all double check with our athletes to make sure we are all in compliance.
Thanks for checking into this,
Stew

The 4A District Championship game Saturday had all the makings of a baseball game without a photo. Marysville-Pilchuck pitchers, all three of them in a five inning game, were having trouble locating the strike zone. Starting pitcher Frank Nelson gave up six walks and three wild pitches in just an inning and 2/3rds, resulting in a five-run first for Mountlake Terrace.

The scoreboard said 5-0 after the first, but none of the runs scored made anything that resembled a good “winning” photo. Sure, there were some high-fives and a couple of fist bumps, but nothing that could lead a Sunday sports cover.

At this point, I was hoping for a comeback by Marysville-Pilchuck, if only to create a little suspense over who might win the game. In my experience, close games result in much better photos. The game isn’t over until it’s over and the winners are truly excited and celebrate all at once. In a blowout, the kids know who’s going to win and who’s going to loose before the end and don’t react with so much passion. But my hope of a comeback by M-P wasn’t going to happen, as their pitchers continued to struggle and Terrace’s pitcher, Jake Theis, glided through his five-innings of work.

I started to get uncomfortable. I had photo hole on the sports cover to fill. Photos weren’t happening, as they often DON’T in baseball. There were a couple of plays at second, but in baseball, those are a dime a dozen and often end up being boring. I switched sides, from the third-base side to first. I had good view of Mountlake Terrace’s dugout from there and hoped to make some sort of reaction photo of the bench. I went from photographing a baseball game to photographing a baseball bench. Terrace was up 10-3 going into the fifth and I was dreading that they would score three more runs and end the game. (In prep baseball, there is a 10-run mercy rule; if any team goes up by 10 runs, the ump calls the game.) Sure enough, one run scored. Now we were only two runs way from the end and still no photo. Cold sweat. Up to the plate comes junior outfielder Ryan Sells. Small guy, didn’t strike me as a perennial homer hitter, just a solid prep baseball player. And while I’m busy trying to make a lame bench photo, Sells jacks his first homer of the season, a two-run home run to put Terrace up by ten, ending the game. Needless to say the bench exploded. The best possible photo scenario happened and I was ready for it. Yes, Mountlake Terrace blew out another team to win the District 1 title, but it wouldn’t have made a photo unless they won it in dramatic fashion. Two-run, walk-off home run anyone? I got lucky. Sells made my game. As he rounded the bases, his teammates streamed out of the dugout, ready to congratulate him as he touched home plate. Normally, the photo of the “home run helmet slapping” is from the third base side because the bench players orient themselves so they can see the base runner as he trots down the third base line. Again, I got lucky as Terrace’s standout shortstop Garrett Totten, held his teammates on the outside of the base path which meant that all their faces were pointed towards me. Sells came home and the helmet slapping ensued. Good day for Mountlake Terrace, good day for photos.

| Teammates congratulate Ryan Sells (far left in helmet) after his two-run homer in the fifth inning gave Mountlake Terrace a 13-3 lead and ended the game. |
Look at the triumphant Mountlake Terrace High School baseball team: Instead of flailing at pitches outside the strike zone, the Hawks repeatedly took a patient approach in the batter's box Saturday. It helped them make program history by rolling to a 13-3 victory over the Marysville-Pilchuck Tomahawks in the Class 4A District 1 championship at Everett Memorial Stadium.
Three Marysville-Pilchuck pitchers combined to walk 11 hitters and Terrace used that wildness to triumph in a game shortened to five innings by the 10-run mercy rule.
Ryan Sells ended the contest when he blasted a two-run home run over the left-field wall. Sells' first homer of the season gave Terrace the first district title in team history, according to Hawks coach Andrew Watters.
"I was really proud of my guys for having the patience early in that game to put (M-P) in trouble. The kids had a very good approach at the plate and they accepted the base on balls and accepted getting on base," said Watters, whose players walked four times in the Hawks' five-run first inning.
Starting pitcher Jake Theis threw all five innings for Terrace (17-6), which earned the district's No. 1 berth in the 4A state tourney. The Hawks host the District 3 No. 4 seed at 1 p.m. May 17 at Everett Memorial.
"This is big for our team, giving us confidence going into state. We're excited -- just pumped up," said Sells, who helped Terrace win its eighth consecutive game. During the streak the Hawks have outscored foes 55-20.
Sells generated a game-winning hit for the second time this week. On Tuesday, his run-scoring double propelled Terrace to a 5-4, extra-innings victory over Shorewood.
Ryan Dimascio had two hits and drove in a run for M-P (15-7), which received the District 1 No. 2 seed. The Tomahawks travel to play the District 3 No. 2 seed at 1 p.m. May 17 at Heidelberg Park in Tacoma.
Beginning with starting pitcher Frank Nelson (six walks and three wild pitches in 1 2/3 innings), M-P was frequently unable to throw strikes. For whatever reason, all three M-P pitchers -- Nelson, John Trimble (three walks) and Tyler Holm (two walks) -- had "trouble locating," M-P coach Kurt Koshelnik said. "I don't know if they were too geared up. It's just one of those things. Guy after guy we put out there just continued walking (batters)."
Terrace took advantage of M-P's pitching struggles. Six of the walks turned into runs, including four of the Hawks' five first-inning runs.
"That first inning's just huge," said Watters. "When we have Jake Theis (7-1) on the mound and you give him five runs to deal with … I just don't think there's too many teams anywhere that will beat us."
Besides Sells, Terrace's offensive leaders were Matt Shafer (a double, three RBI), Garrett Totten (2-for-3, a double, three runs), Andrew Woeck (2-for-3, a double, two RBI) and Jacob Mann (two hits).
Meanwhile, M-P hopes its pitchers regain their accuracy in time for the team's first state-tourney appearance since 2005.
Said Koshelnik, "I'm asking the players to put (the 10-run loss) behind them."

Mountlake Terrace beats Shorewood to qualify for state and advance to District Championship
Mountlake Terrace defeats Shorewood in nine innings
Ryan Sells RBI double helps Hawks advance to state
By Mike Cane

EVERETT -- With a chance to qualify for the state tournament on the line, the Mountlake Terrace baseball team's hopes rested on the bat of Ryan Sells, who was retired in his first four at-bats Tuesday.
With one swing, Sells erased some bad memories and launched the Hawks to victory.
Sells lined a game-winning, run-scoring double down the left-field line that drove in Matt Shafer and lifted Mountlake Terrace to a 5-4, extra-inning triumph over Shorewood.
Kyle Barisic pitched all nine innings for Terrace (16-6), which edged Shorewood (13-9) in the winner-to-state Class 4A District 1 semifinal at Everett Memorial Stadium.
"I was just having a bad game. I just wanted … to bring that one down the line and try to make it smooth," said Sells.

Pair strong on mound for Mountlake Terrace
Theis and Barisic have been dependable starters for the Hawks
By Mike Cane
Herald Writer
Reliable pitching is more valuable than ever at this time of year.
In Jake Theis and Kyle Barisic, the Mountlake Terrace High School baseball team has two of the most dependable starting pitchers in the area. So far this spring, Theis and Barisic have combined to go 10-1 for the Hawks.
"They both have been consistent and they both have given us good starts every time they go out there. They both throw strikes," Mountlake Terrace baseball coach Andrew Watters said of the right-handers.
Watters is hoping for another strong pitching performance when Terrace hosts Stanwood at 1 p.m. today in a first-round Class 4A District 1 tournament game. Theis, a Washington State University recruit who is 5-1 with a 1.53 earned-run average, will start for Terrace (14-6), the Western Conference South Division's No. 1 seed.

Mountlake Terrace takes Wesco South title, top district seed
Herald staff
MOUNTLAKE TERRACE -- Mountlake Terrace can start making postseason plans.
Terrace (13-3 league) clinched the Wesco South title Tuesday by defeating visiting Shorecrest 6-2 thanks to a workhorse performance from starting pitcher Kyle Barisic and a perfect night at the plate from senior Garrett Totten. The Hawks will face the Wesco North's No. 4 seed, Stanwood, in the first round of the 4A District 1 playoffs on Saturday.
"I'm proud of my kids for winning in a tough league," Mountlake Terrace coach Andrew Watters said.
Barisic pitched a complete game, throwing seven strikeouts and surrendering five hits.
"He was fantastic today," Watters said. "Our pitching has been good all year ... He threw strikes, he was in control of the game."
Barisic was helped by a Terrace defense that didn't surrender an error and an offense that scored four runs in the first two innings.
Totten, who has signed to play for Texas Tech next year, batted 3-for-3 for the Hawks with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Ryan Sells added a double and an RBI and Matt Shafer batted 2-for-3.
"We had success early in the game," Watters said. "Our kids were prepared in their approach, they made (Shorecrest's pitcher) throw a lot of pitches."
Shorecrest, 4-12 in league, received offense from Willie Davies, who hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and senior Chad Morrison, who finished 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored.

Hawks improve to 6-0 in the league with wins over Thunderbirds
By David Pan

SHORELINE
Pitching and defense have propelled Mountlake Terrace to the top of the baseball standings and they lifted the Hawks to a 5-0 victory over Shorewood in a Western Conference South Division game April 8 at Shorewood High School.
Senior pitcher Jake Theis pitched a four-hit shutout as the Hawks improved to 6-0 in the league and 7-3 overall. Theis, who struck out three, allowed only one hit in the last five innings.
"Jake got stronger as the game went on and our defense held up," said Mountlake Terrace coach Andrew Watters. "We made some real key plays in that game to support Jake defensively and I think that was the difference. We kind of grinded out one there."
Center fielder Jacob Mann dove to make a catch to record the third out in the second inning and shortstop Garrett Totten made several key plays to keep the Thunderbirds off the basepaths.
"I just threw the ball low and got outs," said Theis, a first-team, all-league pitcher. "I have a great defense, the middle infield especially. I had a lot of ground balls and they made nice throws."
Theis had to survive a somewhat rocky first inning in which the Thunderbirds had two hits and runners on second and third with one out.

Terrace hands Knights 2nd straight loss
By Jesse Geleynse
Herald Writer
MOUNTLAKE TERRACE -- This was destined to be somewhat of a rebuilding year for Kamiak, after the Knights graduated 11 seniors from last season's district tournament team.
Kamiak now starts four sophomores and a freshman and the growing pains were evident Monday, as Kamiak committed four errors -- leading to four unearned runs -- and stranded nine runners on the base paths in an 8-1 loss to Mountlake Terrace.
"We're very young, but we still made stupid mistakes that cost us," said Kamiak coach Steve Merkley. "We're a JV team that's playing a varsity schedule."
Terrace's second win over Kamiak in as many days gave the Hawks a season sweep of the Knights and sole possession of first place in the Wesco South standings.
"That was a big effort in getting two games from Kamiak," said Terrace coach Andrew Watters. "They're always a very good team, so we are happy that we were able to maintain the momentum that we built from yesterday."
Kamiak's defensive struggles started in the first inning. Terrace's Garrett Totten struck out, but was able to advance to second when the catcher dropped the third strike and the ensuing throw to first went down the right field line. Totten scored on an RBI groundout by Matt Shafer for the 1-0 lead.
The Hawks used another Kamiak error to set up back-to-back RBI doubles by Shafer and Paul Clingan in the third to take a 4-0 lead. Mountlake Terrace tacked on three more runs in the fourth when Totten's two-run single and Shafer's sacrifice fly made it 7-0 after an error, a hit and a walk had loaded the bases.
"We gave them six outs and it's tough to overcome that," Merkley said.
While Terrace took advantage of their opportunities, the Knights were unable to do likewise, as they ran into solid Terrace pitching for the second day in a row.
One day after Hawks' starter Jake Theis pitched a one-hitter in a 13-0 Mountlake Terrace victory, junior Kyle Barisic scattered seven hits while yielding just one run in six innings of work.
"(Barisic) has been outstanding for us this year," Watters said. "He's really stepped up and is becoming another go-to guy on the mound for us."

Mountlake Terrace hopes to be a title contender
Check out the Enterprise article on Mountlake Terrace Baseball
The Mountlake Terrace baseball team looks primed to make a solid run at a fourth straight district playoff appearance.
The Hawks return two of the top players in the league in pitcher Jake Theis and shortstop Garrett Totten, both of whom earned first-team, all-league honors.
Theis leads what should be one of the deepest pitching staffs in the Western Conference South Division.
"We've got our whole pitching staff back from last year," said Mountlake Terrace coach Andrew Watters. "We have a really deep and experienced pitching staff."
Theis likes to throw the fast ball and change-up and he also has an improved breaking ball.
"He got better over the off-season," Watters said. "I think he's poised to have a big year."
The rest of the staff includes senior Ryan Monfiletto, junior Ryan Sells, junior Jacob Mann, junior Mark Baehm, junior Bill Lechtenberg and junior Kyle Barisic, a newcomer who threw well in a 3-1 loss to Snohomish on March 11. Watters has plenty of options when he makes the call to the bullpen.
