Mt. Hope Cowboys: About MHC
The Mt. Hope Cowboys was founded in 1973 as the Woodlawn Cowboys and was part of the Rhode Island Pre-Teen League servicing the youth of Pawtucket and Providence. In 1995, the Woodlawn Cowboys relocated from Pawtucket to Providence and became the Mount Hope Cowboys. The Mt. Hope Cowboys mainly serviced the youth of the Mount Hope neighborhood but never turned away any child wanting to participate in the Mt. Hope Cowboys Football & Cheerleading Association.
Our name was known throughout Rhode Island as we won over 15 Pre-teen State Champions. As the Cowboys continued on their winning streak, it was decided in 2006 to join the Rhody Youth Football League which was governed by American Youth Football. The first and only year with Rhody Youth Football, the Cowboys once again became RYF State Champions.
In 2007, the Cowboys found it in their best interest to leave AYF and join Pop Warner as the possibilities were endless. The Cowboys became part of Rhode Island Southern Massachusetts League (RISMA) and their winning streak continued and the Cowboys could not be stopped. Winning 2 cheer and football State Championships our first year with RISMA and having our Pee Wee team continue to dominate throughout New England traveling to the National Pop Warner Super Bowl in 2007 was very much a huge accomplishment. Once again our winning streak did not end.
In 2009, the Cowboys along with 9 other Associations within RISMA decided it was in the best interest of the RI Associations that they leave RISMA and charter their own league within them Pop Warner relm. The Ocean State Pop Warner League (OSPW) was formed and the Cowboys continued their legacy becoming the first OSPW football RI State Champion at the Pee Wee and Midget level. Our Jr. Midget cheerleaders were OSPW first small novice champions.
Mt. Hope Cowboys, the Premier Pop Warner Youth Football team in Providence Rhode Island, and is a non-profit organization with over 200 local children participating in the Cowboys football and cheerleading. Although the Cowboys have been members of various leagues throughout the state we our mission has always been to teach the children of Providence the fundamentals of football and cheerleading in an organized and supervised environment with emphasis on safety in an atmosphere conducive to developing sound mind, body and character. In addition, we inspire youth to practice the ideals of good sportsmanship, scholarship, and personal integrity.
The Mt. Hope Cowboys follows the rules and regulations under Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc. and is the only national youth sports organization, which also emphasizes education. We emphasize to our players and cheerleaders it is their score in the classroom, not on the field that is most important!
Mission: The Cowboys organization was established with the objective of teaching the children of Providence the fundamentals of football and cheerleading in an organized and supervised environment with emphasis on safety in an atmosphere conducive to developing sound mind, body and character.
