WELCOME TO MSSLax!

The Minneapolis/St. Paul area Middle School Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association (MSSLax), founded in 2003, organizes and supports middle school age schoolgirls' lacrosse leagues. The goal of the association is to facilitate competitive play for middle school teams, stressing skills development and sportsmanship.

Spring teams play games from early April through late May; a separate play day is held each spring.  There are two divisions: 5th/6th grades and 7th/8th grades.

Summer teams will play games from mid-June until mid-July.  A play day is likely.  There are two divisions: girls having completed 4th/5th/6th grades and those who've completed 7th/8th grades.

Coaches are required to attend a Manditory Rules Interpretation Meeting. Beginning in spring 2009, all coaches for Spring & Summer must be certified as a Double-Goal Coach with the PCA (Positive Coaching Alliance). More detailed league rules and regulations are available at left.

Extreme Heat Guidelines, Summer 2009

For the 2009 season, please follow the following guidelines for playing in extreme heat:

* First and foremost, make sure the players are well-hydrated prior to game time.

* With a heat index of 110 degrees or higher at the field between 45-60 minutes prior to game time, you should cancel and reschedule the game. Make sure to notify the referees with enough notice that you don't have to pay them for the cancelled game.  If they arrive and then you decide to cancel, you owe them for the cancelled game.

* In extreme heat under the heat index of 110 degrees, make sure you have a cooler with ice water/towels for the players to cool off with.  Bring extra cold water.  If possible, let players rest in the shade when not on the field.  Encourage parents/fans to bring umbrellas to provide shade.

* During the game, negotiate with the referees and other coaches to include one 1-2 minute running time water break in any or all quarters as necessary.

* Remind players that they should drink 2 glasses of water each hour (for a few hours) after the game.

* If in doubt, err on the side of player, fan, coach, and referee safety.
