2013 Post Season Play Opportunities

This year, Mount Seymour Little League will be fielding several all-star teams for players age 12 and under: one team for 9 and 10 year-olds and another for 11 and 12 year-olds. We will also have two tournament teams: one for players aged 8 or 9 and one for 11 year-olds who wish to play during the summer. If your child is interested in playing on a post-season team and is willing to make the commitment required, please read the appropriate section below.

POST-SEASON PLAY
Post-season teams operate differently from regular-season and playoff teams. For example, players are selected based on ability, so not every child who wants to be on a team actually 'makes' one. Although every player on a team is guaranteed some playing time each game, some players get more playing time than others. Also, Tournament rules are different from those used during the regular season and playoffs.

The coaches decide which players make the team based on the Tryouts, which players play which positions, and how much players, play during a game (although there is a minimum amount of playtime for all players at a game.) "Making the team" means much more than having very good baseball skills. The teams will be chosen on much more than baseball skills alone. Additional things that managers and coaches are looking for in a good player include the following:

  • Knowing what to do in a baseball situation,
  • Possessing and expressing a positive team attitude,
  • Willingness to accept input from managers and coaches,

and we can not forget hustle. Hustle all the time, warm-ups, try-outs, practices, on to the field, off the field, cleaning up after practice. Show the coaches and managers that you want to make the team. Hustle.

IMPORTANT: Unlike the regular season, equal treatment is not part of post-season play. Coaches will decide who plays where and for how long based on the player's abilities and requirements of the game.

It is also important to note that parents are expected to volunteer, as required, at practices and games. Duties could include scorekeeping, pitch counting, field prep, etc.

In order for children to be considered for the team, parents must sign the Mount Seymour Little League Post-Season Protocol.

The above mentioned items are the kind of issues that coaches will explain at their first clinics. Therefore, we recommend that parents remain for the first half hour or so of the initial clinic, in order to learn more about post-season play and to ask any questions.

8/9 YEAR-OLDS TOURNAMENT
MSLL will be entering the Lynn Valley Tournament held on the CANADA DAY long weekend.

Players must be aged 8 or 9 as of April 30, 2013. Players vying for a spot on the team must be available for tryouts, team practices and all game days. Proof of age and residency is mandatory.

The manager (head coach) will be selected soon. Information regarding upcoming Tryouts, the team selection process, etc. will be sent soon.

9/10 YEAR-OLDS ALL-STARS
For skilled and motivated 9 and 10 year-olds, our 9/10 All-Stars team offers the opportunity to play at a high level against other teams from across the North Shore (District 5). The District tournament begins on Saturday June 15th and the first game for Mt Seymour is at 5:00 pm on that day. If successful, our team will play in the Provincials against teams from other areas of BC. The Provincials tournament will be held on Vancouver Island July 13-21.

To qualify for this team, players must:

  • Be aged 9 or 10 as of April 30, 2013
  • Able to provide proof of age and residency in the MSLL catchment
  • Make the cut at Tryouts to be held June 9
  • Be available for practices and games through July if the team makes the Provincials

VERY IMPORTANT! The coaches are holding tryouts Sunday, June 9, from 3:00 pm till 5:00 at Myrtle diamond. If your son or daughter is interested in trying-out for this team, email me at president@msll.ca. We need to know who is interested in playing on this team. Our coaches will be named later this week. Players should come equipped like they would if they were playing a game, with suitable baseball pants, cup, cleats and glove. DO NOT BE LATE TO TRYOUTS, SHOW UP EARLY.

11/12 YEAR OLDS ALL-STARS
For skilled and motivated 11 and 12 year-olds, our 11/12 All-Stars team offers the opportunity to play at a high level against other teams from across the North Shore (District 5). If successful, our team will play in the Provincials against teams from other areas of BC. The Provincials tournament will be held in Vancouver, BC beginning July 20th.

Teams from Atlantic Region, Ontario, Quebec, Prairies and BC will compete in Nationals August 2-11 in Nova Scotia. They will be playing for the right to play in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA, August 15-25.

To qualify for this team, players must:

  • Be age 11 or 12 as of April 30, 2013
  • Able to provide proof of age and residency in the MSLL catchment
  • Make the cut at Tryouts to be held in mid-June
  • Be able to travel to Nova Scotia, if MSLL advances as the BC representative
  • Be available for practices and games through August 28 if the team advances to the Little League World Series
  • Be able to travel to Williamsport, PA, if MSLL advances as the Canadian representative
  • Have a valid Canadian passport to facilitate travel to the U.S. if required

There will be further emails regarding try-outs and commitment level.

11 YEAR-OLDS TOURNAMENTS
There is not a sanctioned tournament for 11 year-olds; however, there is a number of tournaments in the Lower Mainland during the summer. Typically, the MSLL 11 year-olds team is comprised of players who either were not selected for the 11/12 year-olds all-star team or who were not able to make the necessary commitment. The intent of this team is to improve player skills in a tournament environment. This will enhance a player's ability to perform in future all-star tournaments.

Because of that, the 11 year-olds team will not begin practicing until after the 11/12 year-olds team has been determined. At that time, one or two Clinics will be held.

To qualify for this team, players must:

  • Be age 11 as of April 30, 2013
  • Able to provide proof of age and residency in the MSLL catchment
  • Be available for a certain number of practices and games

The team manager (head coach) will be named at a later date and will be looking for a commitment for players to be able to play throughout the summer. We understood that it will be difficult for all players to attend all games because the full schedule of games will not be set until after Tryouts.
