Mission San Jose Little League

Mission San Jose Little League was established in 1964 and is a non-profit organization chartered by Little League Baseball, Inc. For 47 years, MSJLL has dedicated itself to providing a safe enjoyable baseball program for Fremont’s youth. MSJLL has nine divisions and supports players from age 4 to 18. We are proud to offer an exemplary program that has a history of building not only championship winning teams but perhaps more importantly, better members of the community as well. Run entirely by volunteers and supported by donations, MSJLL seeks to provide a rewarding experience for our volunteers, parents, and players alike. If you are interested in joining MSJLL in any capacity, just contact a board member. We’d love to talk to you.

Challenger Division

The Challenger Division of Little League Baseball is a program that allows mentally and physically challenged youth to enjoy the full benefits of Little League participation in an athletic environment structured to their abilities. The value of the Challenger Division exceeds the baseball skills that each person learns. More value is found in the proven therapeutic and socialization benefits of participation in sports, including greater self-esteem, learning the importance of discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship and fair play, which are all hallmarks of Little League Baseball. Challenger Division games are usually played at 10:00 a.m. on Saturdays at various locations in Fremont and Newark.

Challenger Buddy Program

The Mission San Jose Little League Challenger Division owes part of its success to the excellent Buddy Program. A Buddy is a volunteer who helps the Challenger player bat, field and run the bases. Both kids and adults can serve as buddies. If you can be a buddy at one or more Challenger games, or to get more information, please contact Susan Berlin. You can be a hero by being a buddy!

T-Ball Division

The T-ball Division is for boys and girls age 4 and 5. It is both recreational and instructional, with the coaches teaching the fundamentals of baseball in a fun environment. The goal is for each player to have fun and, at the end of the season, to have a better understanding of the game. T-ball is non-competitive focused. No score is kept and everyone is a winner. Each player bats and everyone plays in the field. There is no pitching as batters hit from a Tee placed at home plate. Each team bats until five runs are scored or until there are three outs. Games last one hour or six innings. In T-ball every parent is an assistant coach. Coaches and parents help out each game as base coaches, reminding the players where and when to run and in the field encouraging the players to go after the balls and where the ball should be thrown.

Farm Division

The Farm Division is designed for 6 and 7 year olds.  It is their first exposure to a pitched ball and is primarily a learning league.  Emphasis is placed on the learning of basic skills and baseball strategy.  An important component is sportsmanship. This league is a transition between hitting off a tee and being pitched to by other players. In this division, all pitching is performed by the players’ own coach (or designated adult) or by machine. Score is not kept and there are no league standings. Each player bats and everyone plays in both the infield and outfield positions. A coach assists the batters as needed.  Each team bats until five runs are scored or until there are three outs.  Then it’s the other team’s turn. Games last one and a half hours or six innings.

Minor American Division

The Minor American Division is a training division where players age 8 through 9 start putting together their acquired baseball skills.  Minor American maintains an instructional focus through limitations on extra-base hits and base running.  Each team fields ten players (with four outfielders).  The focus is on having fun while learning and improving player skills.

The season combines player and coach pitching giving young pitchers their first opportunity to develop their pitching skills. No walk is allowed.

Minor National Division

The Minor National Division is a training ground for MSJLL’s Major Division.  Players age 9 through 11 go through league try-outs and are drafted to a team. The level of play is all player-pitch with an umpire crew regulating each game.  Official scores are kept and standings posted in the MSJLL field house.  The Minor National Division offers a competitive and exciting level of play, while continuing to build skills in an effort to prepare players to move up to the Major level.

Major Division

The Major Division teams are made up of 10, 11 and 12 year olds who are ready for a more intense baseball experience. The managers and coaches draft the players based on pre-season tryouts in order to build a team. The level of play both offensively and defensively is elevated and players begin to specialize at particular positions. This division is fun for players and fans alike.

At the end of the season, players are selected from the Major teams to compete in Little League Baseball’s All-Star Tournament. If the All-Star team continues to win District, Sectional and Regional tournament games, they will have an opportunity to advance to the World Series in Williamsport, PA.

Junior Division

The Junior Division is made up of players that are 13 and 14 years of age.  Most players have been playing for several years and have become comfortable with playing baseball.  The Junior Division introduces players to playing on a regulation size field; the same size field used by high school, college and major league teams.  In addition to the larger field, many of the rules related to base running such as leading off and stealing make playing in the Junior Division more like “real baseball.”

Senior Division

The Senior Division is for players 15 and 16 years old.  This has recently been one of our most successful divisions as they have been to the Northern California Divisional All-Star Tournament three times in the past eight years.

Big League Division

The Big League Division consists of 17 and 18-year-old players.  Most players have either recently graduated high school or are entering their senior year with extensive experience and training through MSJLL and/or a high school program. Last year’s team won the District 14 End of Season Tournament. Big League plays four games per week including a Sunday double header.

Challenger Division

 Challenger Division

The Challenger Division was established in 1989 as a separate division of Little League to enable boys and girls with special needs, ages 4-18, or up to age 22 if still enrolled in high school, to enjoy the game of baseball along with the millions of other children who participate in this sport worldwide. Today more than 30,000 children participate in more than 900 Challenger Divisions worldwide.

More than the skills of baseball learned through the experience, the value of the Little League Challenger Division is found in the proven therapeutic and socialization benefits of participating in sports, the strengthening of participants’ self-esteem, the opportunities to mainstream into other divisions of play, and the disciplines of teamwork, sportsmanship and fair play, which are hallmarks of the Little League program.

The Little League Challenger Division provides the framework so Little League programs may offer a structured, athletic activity for all youth in their communities. Playing with the same equipment on the same fields, Challenger Division participants have the opportunity to experience the joys of pulling together as a team, being cheered, and earning awards for their achievements.

In a Challenger game, each player gets a chance at bat. The side is retired when the offense has batted through the roster, or when a pre-determined number of runs have been scored, or when three outs are recorded. Little League recommends that no score be kept during Challenger games. The Challenger players wear the same uniforms, shoulder patches and safety equipment as other Little League players.

Teams are set up according to abilities, rather than age, and can include as many as 15-20 players. Challenger games can be played as t-ball games, coach pitch, player pitch, or a combination of the three.

One of the benefits of having a Challenger Division is that it encourages the use of "buddies" for the Challenger players. The buddies assist the Challenger players on the field but whenever possible, encourage the players to bat and make plays themselves. However, the buddy is always nearby to help when needed.

District 14 has teams in Centerville National, Mission San Jose, Newark American, Newark National and Niles-Centerville.

Our goal is have at least one team in each of our eight leagues so we can bring baseball to the entire Fremont and Newark communities so please come see us play and spread the word about Challenger Baseball.
