SANTOS DRAWS WITH #17 D'FEETERS, 2-2
Saturday's first game against home side D'Feeters 90 drew over a dozen college coaches, and the eventual 2-2 draw captured the essence of this physical contest that many 50/50 balls and hard tackes. Santos had its chances throughout, but especially in the first half, producing one dangerous ball after another and taking a 1-0 lead into halftime. The D'Feeters side, ranked 17th in the nation by National Soccer Rankings, equalized early in the second half and continued pressing as they pounced on every mis-played ball and counter-attacked aggressively, forcing three successive corners. The third found the head of their six-foot forward and the score was even at 1-1. With about 15 minutes remaining, Cris Valenzuela found herself inside the 18 with the ball and space. She drew two defenders and the keeper right, then bent the ball back into the far post net to put Santos up, 2-1. D'Feeters turned up the heat once again, sending the ball long several times. Santos trapped them offside each time, until the D'Feeter's 6-footer received the ball in what appeared to be an offside position and beat the Santos keeper to knot the score. All present agreed that it was the match of the weekend.
SANTOS STIFLES KC LEGENDS RED (Kansas) 1-0 IN SHOWCASE OPENER.
Santos traveled to Dallas on Thanksgiving Day intent on ending the disappointment of the past two Sundays with a strong showing in the D'Feeter's Showcase. Friday's first big step landed squarely on KC Legends Red 90, a sound and physically tough side from Kansas City, Kansas. A Santos shot within the first minute of play foretold an eventual 80/20 Santos edge in possession. Santos keepers only needed to make one save--on a corner, late in the first half.. Santos created its opportunities by stringing passes together after counter-attacking effectively. With about 15 minutes remaining, KT Keyes' took a perfect Holland Crook chip out of the air and volleyed it home.
