SANTOS COMPETES AT WSU 7-A-SIDE TOURNAMENT
Santos began its 2006 tournament season by traveling to Pullman the weekend of April 21-23 to play in the Annual WSU 7-A-Side Tournament, an opportunity for teammates to play in a fun & challenging format, room together in a college atmosphere and get their first taste of what college competition actually looks like. The tournament mixed youth (U16, U17 & U18 teams) with college squads from Washington, Idaho, Montana and Oregon. Coach Bill Crook split his team into two 8-person squads under the leadership of his two able assistant coaches, Joe Orr and Janett Meyers. The teams had mixed success against some stiff competition, posting a combined record of 3-4-1. Santos Blue played a big and physical University of Montana team, scoring first before losing the game, 5-1. After easily handling the Washington Premier FC's 90's, this group faced a talented group from University of Puget Sound's National Semifinalist team, dropping a 5-2 decision. In their final game, Santos Blue shut out a U18 Sandpoint, Idaho split squad, 4-0. Santos Red faced a tough NWN Shamrocks team, which had come off a recent State Championship loss to the FC Royals U18's, losing 5-2. After a hard-fought 0-0 draw with Central Washington University, Santos Red had the privilege of playing the aforementioned FC Royals U18 State Champs, complete with a squad of 12, including two All-Americans. After enduring a 7-1 schooling, this feisty bunch bounced back to bounce the other half of the Sandpoint U18 squad, 4-2. Players and parents enjoyed the fast pace of the games and the tournament in general and the Pullman campus provided a beautiful backdrop for this well-run and extremely fun tournament weekend.
