CALIFORNIA SUN & SURF INTERNATIONAL

sun-n-surf2
Please visit our Home Page to read the exciting story describing how Santos won 6 straight matches to capture the championship of the Gold Level California Sun & Surf International Showcase, a tournament held in Long Beach, California on August 13-15, 2005. 309 teams from all over the world, some from as far away as Taiwan, competed in this very competitive tournament.

Santos Celebrate Tournament Win with BBQ/Campout
santos campout 2
It might sound like a strange way to celebrate your victory at a glitzy Southern California Showcase Tournament, but on Saturday, August 20th, Santos families hitched their wagons and hit the dusty trail out to Eatonville for a first-class barbecue and (players-only) campout under the stars.
Santos would like to humbly thank Jim and Lois Erickson for opening their hearts, serving up a world-class BBQ dinner, and for bravely chaperoning many of the players as they braved "the wilderness." (Well, most of them were brave.)
Jim, who has won BBQ championships in several State Competitions across the country, grilled and smoked mountains of ribs, New York steaks, chicken, hamburgers, and the hit of the event, "pulled pork," which is combined with a spicy slaw and Jim's secret "Santos Sauce" on a Hoagy for the tasiest mouthful one has ever experienced.
This was a time to kick back and reflect on a summer that began with a successful fundraising party and ended with Santos winning the California Sun & Surf International in Long Beach, California. (But enough about soccer!) All of the neighbors dropped in to meet the "visitors," and the hospitality and genuine friendliness of these fine people was evident.
After dark, the girls enjoyed a blazing bonfire ("burn ban, schmurn ban") complete with marshmallows, a nearly full moon, a few coyotes howling in the distance, some "tall tales," (It is said that "Eatonville," loosely-translated, means "practical joker") and visits by some (okay a bunch of) Eatonville football players, who materialized for a "meet-n-greet" with the players. Several of these well-mannered young men managed to drag the "greet" out until long into the bonfire!
While some of the Santos players were out of town with family getting re-acquainted before school starts, everyone agreed that the Erickson's really know how to show folks a good time!
MRFC Santos wishes to thank all of the coaches, parents, and our sponsors for the support, encouragement, confidence and for the enormous sacrifice of time and resources necessary to pull off a premier soccer team and two trips to California.
The parents want to thank our wonderful players and the greatest coaches in the world for inspiring us with your commitment, hard work and for persevering through a very challenging summer schedule and for battling through to be CHAMPIONS!

Slammers Classic Cup Final Match Results

After a respectable showing at the Wolfpack Invitational and an incredible week at the Malibu Soccer Academy, hosted by Pepperdine University, FC Santos returned to Orange County to take on the best of the best of SoCal in the 2005 Slammers Classic Cup. Five of the ten "Premier" teams in the upcoming 2005-2006 SoCal Fall League were entered, as well as three "Gold," two "Silver Elite" and MRFC Santos.
SANTOS V. CRSC INFINITY (CSL Premier)
On Saturday morning, July 16, (Santos's 8th straight day of soccer) Santos drew with SoCal Fall League Tournament Finalist CRSC Infinity 2-2 at UC Irvine. Santos took leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but Infinity fought back and evened the match. Possession, desire and hustle were very even throughout.
SANTOS V. SLAMMERS NORTH (CSL Gold)
In its afternoon match, which was Slammers North's first, Santos played to a 0-0 draw after one half. In the second half, Slammers switched to a kick and run attack, getting behind the defense for one score. The final goal was scored on a quickly taken free kick that found the top of the net--Slammers North 2, Santos 0.
SANTOS V. OJSC X-TREME (CSL Gold)
On Sunday afternoon, Santos took on OJSC X-Treme, controlling possession in the first half. X-treme came out strong in the second half, earning a number of good scoring opportunities. Santos also earned its share, but strong defense on both sides resulted in a 0-0 draw. Later in the afternoon, Slammers North, the only team to defeat Santos in this tough tournament, played Slammers in the Championship match, which was won by Slammers, 5-0.
With two tournaments against the best competition on the West Coast, a challenging camp full of training, competition and fun, overseen by the coaches of Iowa State, Pepperdine and one of the top SoCal coaches, to name a few, plus priceless memories of time spent with friends, this year's California Odyssey has been another great experience for these wonderful girls.

Santos had a great showing at the Wolfpack Invitational. After our third match, someone from Wolfpack came over and asked where we were from. When they found out we were from Washington State, they said, "You guys played us really tough. We were lucky to win that match." Well done, girls!
