MPSC-Patriots: How to Join
So, you think you'd like to swim with us?

In the immortal words of Dirty Harry, "you gotta ask yourself one question", am I eligible to join?

Current (Aug 2007) eligibility requirements
Dependent of an active duty military member?  Eligible
Dependent of a retired military member?  Eligible
Dependent of an Active Reserve/Guard member?  Eligible
Dependent of a Department of Defense employee?   Eligible
Dependent of a Government contractor assigned to Ft Meade? (speak w/ Coach Kay Williamson first)  Eligible

We are not a "try out" club, nor do we have a restricted membership (other than that DoD connection), however a swimmer should be evaluated by a coach BEFORE committing funds. Swimmer evaluations are conducted at the pool, Mon 6:30pm, or Tue-Thur 7:00pm, during the regular swim season (Mid-September through Mid-May)

Prospective swimmers should bring goggles and suit, swim cap if female (or male with long hair), and be ready to swim at the evaluation. If you (your child) meet any of the above, please contact a coach for further information. All swimmers must be members of the Fort Meade Youth Services Organization; all swimmers must have a sports physical on file at the Youth Center; all swimmers must pay applicable fees and dues.

Download and fill out the forms, take applicable ones to Youth Services, and bring the rest to us at the pool -- M/W/F 6:00-7:00 PM, during the regular swim season (mid-Sep thru mid-May).  Forms are available on the Handouts page.  Group descriptions are available on the Group Info page.

Actual Step-by-Step Instructions (I think)
  1. You would think this would be down to a fine art by now, wouldn't you?  Ah yes, but remember the golden rule -- as soon as someone figures out the easiest way to complete all requirements, it is time to change....

    1.  Determine if your swimmer(s) meets basic eligibility requirements (see "how to join").

    2.  Have your swimmer(s) evaluated by a coach (generally just stop by during regular practice hours.)  Youth Services requires evaluation forms.

    3.  If your swimmer is determined eligible you will then begin the Youth Service process, you will be given a form for YS to verify completion of all steps -- please return this form to MPSC.   Youth Services forms are available on the HANDOUT page

    4.  Your swimmer must be a member of Ft Meade YS and your swimmer must have a sports physical on file at YS.  (if your child has had a physical recently, you should be able to take the YS forms to the physician's office and request the physical be transcribed to the YS form)

    5.  Pay your YS fees ($18-20 registration, $65 sports fee (discounted for multiple children)) and have then sign the YS Verification Form.

    6.  Return to the pool for the practice time designated for your swimmer, bring your forms and your checkbook

    7.  Complete MPSC registration form and USA-Swimming form.  Write check to cover USA-swimming registration fees and MPSC dues.

    8.  If you have any questions about the process, please don't hesitate to ask
