Mount Anthony Patriots: 2011/2012 Season: Mount Anthony blanks Bison
Mount Anthony blanks Bison
Shaker, N.Y., coach Dan Gibson was matter-of-fact after his team’s 77-0 loss to Mount Anthony Union High School on Tuesday night.
"This is a jungle for the kids, but that’s why we bring them here," Gibson said. "It’s going to make them better."
Mount Anthony, after finishing second on Saturday at the Timberlane (N.H.) tournament, didn’t skip a beat against the Blue Bison. The Patriots were aggressive from the opening whistle, getting seven first-period pins and eight overall, while two other matches ended as major decisions.
"The kids wrestled pretty well tonight," said MAU coach Scott Legacy. "They did a great job combination wrestling, that is, getting more than one shot and not stopping after the first try."
After two forfeits, senior Zak Hale (132 pounds) had the first first-period pin of the night, falling Jack Sheppack in 1:14.
Damon Young made the score 22-0 with a 12-1 major decision over Niko Caladim at 138 pounds. After a slow start, the freshman turned up the pressure, working for a pin, and getting a bunch of back points in the process.
Tyler White had a first-period fall, beating Sean Stiso in 37 seconds to improve his record to 23-3 on the season.
Austin Price’s match at 160 pounds against Mike Dodd was the closest contest of the evening.
Neither scored in the first period as each combatant looked for an opening. Price scored on a reversal midway through the second for the lead, then scored early in the third for a 4-1 lead. Dodd started in the down position five times in the third period, but couldn’t make any headway, and Price took the 4-2 win.
"He takes his time to get going and that killed him at Timberlane this weekend," Legacy said. "Later in the match, he started to set the tempo, but we have to get him going immediately."
At 170, Tyler Mattison scored another first-period fall, this time in 1:20 over Chris MacDonald. Cam Foucher barely worked up a sweat in his match, pinning his opponent with a cradle in 28 seconds, the fastest fall of the night.
The final four bouts were all won by pin, three in the first period.
Jesse Webb (285) won his match in 1:52, while Rachel Hale (106) won in 38 seconds. Dylan LaFountain finished the shutout with a pin in 1:00 at 113.
The rout was a learning experience for Gibson’s young squad.
"I had one of our wrestlers who’s injured videotape their warm-ups," said Gibson, describing the Patriots’ entrance. "We want to show them how important wrestling is here."
Legacy said Gibson has brought his teams to Bennington to face MAU many times in the past two decades.
"Dan wrestles a tough schedule, and there’s a good relationship between the schools," Legacy said.
