Two in a row !!
The Mooney Boys captured their second consecutive district title with a 4-0 win over Northside Christian. That puts them in the state tournament(see above for brackets). Goals were scored by Randy Warren and Brett Mades in the first half, then Junior Chavez and Mades again in the second half. The defense limited Northside to only 3 shots on goal as they earned the shut out.
HISTORY !!
Mooney defeated St. John Neumann by a score of 4-1 on Thursday night to advance as far as any boys' soccer team in school history. Next Tuesday the Cougars will face Tampa Prep at 6:00PM. The girls play Berkeley Prep at 8:00PM.
In Thursday's game Blake Hoonhout scored first for Mooney, but SJN scored to tie the game. Brett Mades crossed a ball to Junior Chavez who gave Mooney the lead for good. Mooney kept up the pressure and scored 2 more goals.
In the other region quarterfinals Bishop Verot beat Northside Christian, and Berkeley Prep beat Lake Placid. They will play each other at Bishop Verot next Tuesday at 7:30(anyone know someone who will scout the game for us?)
MORE HISTORY !!!
And then there were 8 !!!!
For the first time in the history of boys' soccer at Mooney the boys are in the Regional Finals. This Friday the team will travel to Ft. Myers to face Bishop Verot in a 7:30 match.(Verot beat Berkeley 1-0)
Mooney played a solid match Tuesday against Tampa Prep. The defense only had one slip up, but Aaron Snyder was in the right place and forced the shot wide. Aaron also played the crosses and corner kicks of Tampa Prep very well and didn't give the Terps any chances in close. Mooney had a few good opportunities to score in the first half and their best shot went off the post. Late in the second half Randy Warren took a free kick from almost midfield that found the lower left corner of the goal. On the play the Tampa Prep Keeper was occupied by a great attacking run by Jeremy Rode. The defense did their job the rest of the way and Mooney now moves on.
At this point in the playoffs most games come down to one or two opportunites, or a mistake. Many of Tuesday's semifinals were decided by a single goal. Any play can be the one, any momentary lapse can lead to that one chance. That's what makes this sport so unique; no time outs, no time to stop and regroup, constant calculating and recalculating by the players on the field.
What can you say ??!!!
The boys won the Region and are one of four teams left!
Next up is Bolles on Friday at 5:00PM at Ed Radice complex in North Tampa.
If you click on the headline it will take you to the FHSAA page for the soccer finals.
In the game against Bishop Verot Mooney gave up an early goal to the Vikings. That was the last thing they wanted to happen and what coach had been warning about in practices leading up to the game. But they kept the score at 0-1 through the half and made adjustments during the break. Two minutes into the second half Brandon Geers jumped on a rebound and found the right side of the goal open and tied the score at 1-1. Later in the half Juan Chavez played a ball over his head toward goal, spun around his defender, and beat the keeper near post for the eventual game winner. Mooney scored an insurance goal later in the game and are now headed to Tampa as one of only four teams left in 1A in the STATE !!!
On to the FINALS !!!!!
Mooney defeats The Bolles School by a score of 5-0 to advance to the finals. John Bello scored 3 goals, Blake Hoonhout and Randy Warren also scored for the Cougars.
The finals will be played Saturday March 1 at 5:00 at Ed Radice sports complex.
The opponent will be Melbourn Central Catholic who defeated American Heritage Friday 2-1.
What a weekend !!!
You have to give the team credit! MCC was ranked #2 in the country, they hadn't trailed in a match all season, they have two seniors commited to playing next season at UCF, and they had given up a total of 5 goals all year. But the Mooney boys didn't worry about all that, they went out there and played their game as best they could; they ran for what must have seemed like forever, they faced wave after wave of pressure from MCC and didn't cave in, as a matter of fact they found themselves in the lead at half time. With 37 minutes played in the first period Randy Warren took a free kick from a tough angle way outside the box. Just like in the Tampa Prep game 2 weeks ago, the shot found its way through to the lower left corner of the goal and the fans went nuts!! The team continued its heroic effort through the second period, but Chris Chrissy(who could be voted the best player in the state) found enough of a crease in the defense and scored the equalizer with only 20 minutes to play. There was still hope and the guys continued to battle and work hard, but Chrissy scored a second time with only 8 minutes left in the match. At that point too much energy had been expended trying to keep MCC off the board, and try as they might Mooney just couldn't produce the scoring chances. The final MCC goal came with only three minutes on the clock and the Cougars pushing everyone into the offense to try to tie the game. So ends the most successful season in Cardinal Mooney soccer history. It was a hard loss to take for the boys having given so much on the field, and the emotions were obvious after the game, but they received their awards, collected their thoughts, got a well deserved rest, and celebrated the memorable season on Sunday at the Italian Grill. And coach is already thinking ahead to next season, how in the world are we going to replace this year's senior class? There's only four of them, but they brought so much heart and toughness to this squad, they will be missed! What will be in store as the state sets up new districts again? Who will be next year's "diamond in the rough"? Last year it was Blake, this year it was Will and Aaron. What will next year's freshmen be able to contribute? I can't wait for next year!
