About Thunder Hockey
Mon Valley Youth Hockey Association provides quality hockey programs to develop the skills of young players in Western Pennsylvania. Located in the the Mon Valley and South Hills which is located in close proximity to Pittsburgh. Our home ice is located at The Ice Garden in Belle Vernon. MVYHA has been a leader of the explosive growth of youth hockey. Our Region is one which is quickly becoming known for players and teams that can compete and succeed. Our teams participate in the Pittsburgh Area Hockey League (PAHL) under the guidance of USA Hockey and its rules. Our goal is to allow as many players as possible to participate in hockey at the highest level at which they can be competitive. Our environment is one that strikes a balance of family, sport, and love of the game. We strive to bring out the best in each player, create memories for them and their families that will last a lifetime and share our enthusiasm for the great game of hockey.
Every kid is a winner here! We host competitive league teams for youth from the Mini-Mite Level (age 4) to the Midget (age 18) in multiple levels of competition ranging from AA, A and B. We also offer developmental programs through our Learn to Play program for kids with little skating or league experience from ages 4 and up. League tryouts are held in mid June each year for the season, which starts with practices in late August and extending into March playoffs. We also provide a number of creative fund raising ideas for each player which helps to make hockey more affordable to our families which allows a higher rate of participation. All of our coaches have been fully certified so that you'll see a difference in each player's skills by the end of the season. We regularly evaluate our coaches to insure only the best for your children. Practice drills and plenty of ice time is our martra. Teams will normally practice two to three times a week during August and September, with two practices and a game the average throughout the season. Most all of our teams choose to participate in various tournaments, both locally and throughout the United States and Canada.
Learn To Play
Learn to play is designed for elementary school age children who are interested in the game of hockey and how it is played. We will instruct each child on the ice to develop their skating ability as well as teaching the game. All participants are required to have full hockey equipment (helmet, chest protector, elbow and shin guards, hockey shorts, gloves and neck protector). All coaches are registered and certified with USA Hockey. The program will be held at the Ice Garden, in Rostraver Twp which is home to the new semi professional Mon Valley Thunder hockey team (check out www.monvalleythunder.com for team information
The Learn to Play sessions will be on Monday evenings from 5:50-6:50 pm. USA hockey insurance of $35.00 is required for all players and available at WWW.USAHOCKEY.COM. Please bring your confirmation of registration to the first session. Hope to see you there !!!
