ROSELEA MAKE PROGRESS IN SCOTTISH CUP
Saturday 31st October 2009Scottish Junior Cup 2nd RoundMontrose Roselea v Dyce

After the disappointment of the following week Roselea started their Scottish Cup campaign this year with a home game against Dyce, one of the sides they met on their run last season.

On a great day for football and a surface to match, the team should a few changes to the starting eleven.

Roselea: McLeod, Miller, Graham, Whyte, Doug Craig, Rae, David Craig, Kerrigan(Mustard), Longmuir, Fraser(Riach), Mitchell. Subs: Kennedy, Reoch, Fotheringham, Brand, Massie.

The opening exchanges saw both teams showing their attacking options as Dyce won a couple of corners before Doug Craig hit a long range drive over the bar at the other end.

It was the home side who quickly started taking authority in the game and David Craig won the ball before playing the ball to Mitchell. The striker set up Fraser only to see his cross turned behind for a corner.

The pressure told within a minute as from another corner by Fraser, MITCHELL was free in the box to flick home and make it 1-0.

Fraser then went clean through on goal but Kinnaird in goal did well to block the effort but he could do nothing about Roselea going two up minutes later. From a 20 yard free kick to the right of the penalty area LONGMUIR hit an unstoppable shot into the keeper’s top right hand corner making it 2-0.

Roselea were now in total control and Mitchell just failed to get on the end of a Longmuir cross after a long ball from Graham.

In 20 minutes Dyce were awarded a free kick in a dangerous position but the home defensive wall blocked Neish’s shot.

Roselea came close again shortly after when Miller sent a deep cross into the penalty area where keeper Kinnaird completely missed the ball and it hit Longmuir and went narrowly past the post.

The home pressure continued and Mitchell was sent clear again by Longmuir but Kinnaird again blocked the attempt.

Whyte was next to try his luck but could not manage to direct his header goalward from a Doug Craig free kick.

It was no surprise in 41 minutes that Roselea went 3-0 in front. Another long through ball sent MITCHELL clear and this time he shot past the keeper and into the net from 18 yards.

The last chance of the half fell to Dyce but Kirkwood’s attempt at the back post was easily saved by McLeod.

HALF TIME – ROSELEA 3 DYCE 0

The second half began in the same pattern with Roselea causing the away side problems and in a scramble within the goal area, Mitchell was twice denied as his efforts were blocked.

McLeod was then called into action at the other end when he was forced to parry a Neish free kick but the follow up attempt went over the bar.

Doug Craig then sent in a dangerous free kick and Whyte headed the ball down but keeper Kinnaird got to the ball before Mitchell.

In 58 minutes Watson of Dyce and Graham of Roselea were cautioned for an incident in centre field as the game became a little heated.

Dyce was now having a better spell and Essen had the ball in the net from a Kirkwood cross but was adjudged to have been offside.

McLeod then made a good save from Thoirs header after good set up play and cross by Neish.

The game spilled over in 68 minutes when Whyte of Roselea clashed with Murray of Dyce and the official sent both players off although Murray seemed to been sent off for 2 yellow cards. This seemed a bit harsh considering some previous challenges had merited stronger punishment.

In 73 minutes Kerrigan came close for Roselea with a clear header from a Rae corner which Kirkwood headed off the goal line and within minutes David Craig almost scored with a looping header which rebounded from the bar and cleared to safety.

The home side eventually increased their lead in 77 minutes when FRASER latched on to a Mitchell knock down and drove an unstoppable shot into the corner of the net from the edge of the penalty area.

Kinnaird was forced into an excellent diving save from Rae after good set up play from Mitchell.

The home side made two late changes with Riach and Mustard replacing Kerrigan and the impressive Fraser.

The substitutions had time to effect the result further as firstly Mustard set up Rae who shot wide from a good position before Mitchell and Rae combined for MUSTARD to score after Kinnaird could only parry the cross.

FULL TIME – ROSELEA 5 DYCE 0

A week in football can be a long time and that is certainly true of Roselea performances, with credit given to the management team for turning in a totally impressive effort and it is now hoped this can be the level that the squad can perform regularly in forthcoming league fixtures.

This Saturday (7th November) Roselea travel to Fauldhouse for a league fixture with a 2pm Kick Off.
