Saturday 26th September 2009

East of Scotland Cup

Montrose Roselea v Linlithgow Rose

Roselea entertained Super League Linlithgow Rose in a first Round East of Scotland Cup tie at Broomfield Park last Saturday.

Roselea: McLeod, Reoch, Graham, Whyte, Longmuir, Fotheringham, McKellar, Kerrigan, Kennedy, Fraser, Mitchell. Subs: Rae, Miller, Doug Craig, Brand, Riach, Strachan, Massie.

The first chance fell to the home side when bad defending allowed Fraser to set up Mitchell but the keeper saved the effort.

Linlithgow responded and within minutes had a shot which went narrowly past the post.

It took until 25 minutes before the next opening appeared and it took a headed clearance for a corner after a dangerous cross from Fraser for Roselea.

McKellar was next to attack but sadly after an excellent run the ball eventually went out for a goal kick.

McLeod was then called into action to save a deflected shot but the referee had blown for offside against an attacker.

Roselea were now under a bit of pressure and after a shot that went over the bar McLeod was then again called into action to make a diving save.

The first half came to a close with the home side giving a good account of themselves and worthy of being level at the interval.

HALF TIME – ROSELEA 0 LINLITHGOW 0

The game swung from end to end at the start of the second half with the away side having a shot narrowly over before Whyte had a header held by the keeper from a Longmuir free kick.

In 55 minutes Roselea broke the deadlock. After Mitchell had been fouled, Fraser flighted the free kick into the penalty are and WHYTE headed home to make it 1-0.

Whyte was then called into action at the other end making a good block as Linlithgow responded.

McLeod was called into action again half way through the half making a good diving save down to his right as Roselea continued to hold their lead.

The away side continued to press and did have the ball in the net but the official ruled offside against the scorer.

The pressure finally told in 82 minutes when McARTHUR hit an unstoppable free kick into the top corner to level the score.

Roselea came close not long after when Mitchell turned and shot only to see his effort go just past the post.

The game looked like ending in a draw until in the fourth minute of injury time TYRELL scored for Linlithgow after a free kick was played into the penalty area.

Multi Match Sponsors – John Ednie, George Milne, Neil Taylor Lithgae Mob and MGPA chose Paul Whyte as their Man of the Match.

FULL TIME – ROSELEA 1 LINLITHGOW 2

A cruel ending for the home side after putting so much into the game to end with nothing but it is hoped that this level of performance can be carried into future league matches.
