Saturday 29th August 2009East Region Premier LeagueMontrose Roselea v Forfar West End
The league season started for Roselea on Saturday after winning through to the final of the League Cup in midweek. Forfar West End were again the visitors and it was no surprise that the home side started with the same eleven from Wednesday.
Roselea: McLeod, Miller, Graham, Whyte, Longmuir, Kennedy(Fotheringham), Mustard(Kerrigan), David Craig, Rae, Watson, Riach(McKellar). Subs: Brand, Doug Craig, Reoch, Brown
West End had the strong wind at their backs in the first half and Duell had the first attempt but McLeod was not troubled.
Whyte responded for Roselea at the other end but he could not get his header on target from a rehearsed corner kick.
Another good move by the home side which included Rae, Whyte, Riach then Watson saw the striker having his shot well held by keeper Vanderdeyl.
The game swung to the other end and Garrick got to the ball before keeper McLeod and his header had to be cleared for a corner by Miller before it reached the goal.
West End then had a spell of the ball but did give the home defence a lot of problems and it took until 25 minutes before Duell had a shot but the ball went wide of the goal.
Miller of Roselea was then cautioned for a tackle on Johnston as Roselea continued to deal with anything West End could throw at them.
In 36 minutes it was the home side that broke the deadlock. Watson did well on the left hand side of the box before squaring the ball to MUSTARD who hit a low drive from around the edge of the penalty area past Vanderdeyl to make it 1-0.
Whyte and Watson were then cautioned for speaking out of turn before the last chance of the half saw Watson send Rae clear on the right and Vanderdeyl dived and parried the cross and eventually the ball was cleared.
HALF TIME – ROSELEA 1 FORFAR WEST END 0
The second half started with high drama and the ground went into stunned silence when Rae of Roselea and Johnston of Forfar West End were both shown straight red cards for a slight incident between them.
In 55 minutes this got even worse when Watson and Gibb of West End challenged for the ball and it went out for a throw in but to more amazement the official pulled out a second yellow card to Watson reducing the home side to nine men.
It took a little time for all the players to come to grips with what had happened and the visitors came close when Roberts shot narrowly past after heroic defending by Roselea blocked previous shots.
In 63 minutes Graham hit a long range wind assisted free kick which just missed the post with Vanderdeyl stranded.
Roselea made a couple of changes shortly after with McKellar and Fotheringham coming on to replace Riach and Kennedy.
West End were pressing Roselea back with the extra man advantage and substitute Pirie drove a low cross in front of goal but no takers were on hand.
Logan then tested McLeod with a drive from outside the box but the keeper dealt with the shot.
Duell then was off target with a header from a Pirie cross before McConnachie had an effort that went just over the crossbar.
Roselea were defending well but were finally beaten in 88 minutes when McConnachie chipped the ball back into the penalty area and DUELL headed home from close range.
Kerrigan then replaced the impressive Mustard as the game went into injury time when Roselea could have snatched the points. A good pass from David Craig sent McKellar through but his attempt went past Vanderdeyl and the post.
